I bought one of these this week. I'm using it as the preamp for my Monoprice 15-watt tube amp. I'm using the 4-cable method so that I can use the Monoprice preamp AND the preamps in the Preamp Live. This is working for me. It takes pedals remarkably well. I have a Fulltone OCD v2.0, Vick Audio '73 Rams Head and Boss MT-2. All three sound great going into the Preamp Live.
I will admit, I'm still trying to decide if I want to keep it. I'm tempted to swap it out for a Strymon Iridium. I realize the Iridium is a bit more limited in terms of the total number of preamps it can reproduce, but it's getting great reviews.
Getting ready to search your site right now to see if you've already reviewed it!
    As always, great vid!

live ?? pre-amp tubes live longer than power ones so no need for me unless somebody using many preamps live
i think there is no need or if you running solid states or transistors power amp this thing is heaven for you , just walk around and capture your friends preamps havem all , they wont sound like the real thing

My Kemper through an ENGL 50x50 Tube Power Amp actually sounds so great that I have not been able to go back to my vintage Plexis. It took me a little bit to dial in my sounds but now in many cases I'm getting better sounds than my plexis. Hard to believe and yes it took me 6 months to convince myself. My old rig consisted of a rack full of pedals that where through a switching system, two vintage Marshalls and a Mesa Dual Rectifier and two Marshall Cabs, dry/wet setup. Used to carry all of it around for the holy grail tone. Now after one year of dialing in I cannot go back. I'm still trying to go back to the old setup but the Kemper with 2 cabs and stereo tube power amp has replaced 3 heads and a rack full of stuff.

Being a straight up valve amp lover (Friedman Dirty Shirley) for live use and recording, there is a purpose for pre-amps and modellers where a valve amp is not a feasible option. Simply put , a valve amp is pointless if it cannot be driven at the correct volume in relation to its power.

We still need amps! This thing, and all other similar modelers, need a power amp and a speaker in order to play live or practice with a band for starters. And when the next better model comes out this one will be an expensive door stop but you can have and use effectively a tube amp for decades! And what about latency and "feel" of it? Did you have any issues playing, e.g. did it feel like playing an amp? Most modelers feel like you're playing a "recorded" version of an amp instead of actually playing one. They win in the flexibility part.

    • @MrPolevaulter
      @MrPolevaulter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It wasn't too bad, but it still felt, and sounded, plasticky (what a word). When played through the Marshall it was OK, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

Years ago my dad tried using a pod type thing through the PA at a show n his sound in the monitors was alright but out front he was kinda lost in the mix the other guitarist had a 112 fender combo that was very present and in your face in comparison. It was a small show but a pre amp through the PA didn't stand up to an amp in that setting and let's face it most of us play small rooms at best

  • @MagisterTuomo

Modern day preamps and different Audio interfaces are quite good. They are able to match a good amp in quite many aspects. However I feel they tend to be a bit overcompressed and lack the warmth from a properly warmed up tube-amp. This comes to show every time you strike a big chord. The ringing from all six strings just gets better through an amp. I will however acknowledge the fact that this might be a generational issue, #devabättreförr.
But eventhough I merely play by my lonesome in my living room, without any ambitions, I want the best sound my money can get. Hence a tube-amp and a 4×12-cab. Also, the setup looks cool in my livingroom. Also 2, my head has LED-lights. That is to awesome to pass on 😁 #LaneyIronheartFTW.
Interesting topic though. I especially enjoyed step 3 in the comparison. Very academic approach 🙌👌.

Had to listen again. I tried some tech 21 fly rigs. Man, closest thing I've heard near a real amp. I tried it against a real 1 x 12 dsl 20 and the difference was nil really. The only other I will try will be the Russian made AMT preamps with cab sim.
At my age, I'm so over carrying really heavy amps. I typically carried a 2 x 12 since gigging I didn't like the sound of a 1 x 12 all that well, or had to really turn up the bass to get the right sound. 2 x 12s always just seemed to be the best combo for me, but going direct is a wonderful thing. I'm telling you my friend I think you will dig the Tech 21 fly rig. I've been playing 40+ years and mostly thru tube amps and some solid state amps, but mostly Fender and Peavey tube amps.. Check'em out. I think you will love it. You can get a used tech 21 fly rig for like 175 dollars. Not sure about in Europe though..

    Hi Elmo 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
I thought it will be comparison of digital vs analogue devices in terms of sound processing ))))
What can I say? I think that we have to divide all musicians in 2 big groups: sessional musicians, who should be able to play everything and know how to reach any sound they have heard, and original performers, who is always in search of their own original sound. In terms of the devices used, these groups are equal, at least at some stage, but over time, the second group finds its original sound and limits itself only to the devices they need, while the first group is forced to continue to use everything that only they are able to find. And there is no any difference what type of devices, digital or analogue, they are using - the main thing is that they found the sound that they need ;)

He has several vintage tube amps, modern amps such as Rectum-fiers 😂, Engles, Bogners, Marshalls, old Fender Bassman, and loads of guitars and drums. Really expensive compressors and mics, etc, all stuff I don't totally understand, but I am proud of him. 💝👍💝👍..

I played thru my cousins very expensive Kemper and it's very good at capturing the sound, but it's just not the same. Might as well carry the amp. Like you said though, if you want several sounds and or want to go light to a gig ( LIKE ME ) because you're old as hell, then this is pretty good. Maybe because I grew up listening to all these cool old amps that I just can't get past the artificial sound.

Plus real mics properly placed will give more depth and colour than any DSP wizardry. Keep it real, not digitally approximated when live. Agreed this box would probably speed things up when recording.

If I were a session player or in a cover band needing a wide palette of styles at the push of a button, I’m sure it’s a no-brainer. We are lucky to have so much choice.

We do not need amps. Amps are going to be as redundant as VHS video cassette players in a few years. Sell all your amps now whilst they still have a bit of value. My preamp live is superb. The downloads you can get of tone captures (from Facebook groups etc) are phenomenal. The preamp together with the line6 HXFX works beautifully. Enough tones for a thousand lifetimes in a little box. Beware though, people with tube amps etc have self serving contempt for this sort of stuff..they are terrified of it taking over and all the stuff they have invested a fortune in being practically worthless...and rightly so.

Dead wrong. I've been using the Axe Fx II for a few years now, and I'd be absolutely thrilled if it did what my Marshall does. It's good, but it doesn't have that magic.

Discussion like these are nonsense. Do we still need pen and paper with all the smartphones and tablets around? That question had been asked since the dawn of personal computers 4 decades ago. What for? You can't mess with what works. Kids are still taught penmanship. This is a non-issue.

Need a cab IR of the cab you are using there with the Marshall to load into the Mooer. If you do NOT do this the Mooer will have NO chance in hell at getting the same sound. Drrrrrrrr! Learn your gear before making video's of them!
