- Julian Lage, joined by Dave King on drums and Scott Colley on bass, performs "Seven Come Eleven" at Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ in September 2022.
In Julian's words: It was an absolute honor to perform “Seven Come Eleven” with this beautiful Gibson ES-250 owned by Charlie Christian. This has to be the coolest guitar ever… completely modern and historical at the same time. Charlie Christian played this guitar on “Solo Flight” and many other songs during his time with Benny Goodman. Thank you to Lynn Wheelwright and all of our friends at the Musical Instrument Museum for making this happen. Thank you to Scott Colley and Dave King for the gift of sharing this experience together.

Julian is the most interesting improviser on guitar I’ve ever seen. The dynamics are incredible. So much feeling.

We saw him in Pittsburgh, right before covid, small club. 3 piece band, blazing good.
Was there with my wife as well. Julian and the band were so damn good. And that venue! Got tickets late, so we were in the very back, but it didn't matter. It still sounded like we were wearing headphones, and could hear every detail.
Django would have liked this guitar instead of the Gibson they gave him back in those days !
Nobody embodies “the sound of surprise” like julian lage. Staggeringly great. Charlie’s rolling over in his grave…to hear better.

Yes the technique is mind-blowing, but the man has exquisite taste. Every aesthetic choice he makes is pure perfection. What a master.
This sets it once for all: a musician plays to enjoy himself not for the public, an entarteiner does the opposite. Grea musicians plays for the joy of th emusic, they're "in the music"
Charlie Christian must be proud to have so much talent playing his guitar. Last time I saw someone playing this relic was George Benson...

My gosh. Julian is maybe the only guitar player that has the dynamics equivalent of an expert classical pianist. What a cool experience to be able to play that guitar.
Great stuff. I'm a big fan of the Benny Goodman Sextet recordings featuring Charlie Christian, and Julian really does it well here with this trio. I'm glad instruments like this are being played, and not locked in a glass case. These instruments need to be heard, not looked at.

Charlie Christian had a tragically short life and he lived in a time where recording music was really in it’s infancy. Thanks to Julian Lage and others, his music will be played forever. This clip is beautifully done. What a treat!

My dad played horns, particularly clarinet for all of his life. He was a Benny Goodman fanatic. When I rebelled to wannabe EVH, he was patient. When I grew up and returned, he gave me Charlie Christian and Rose Room to practice. We jammed it and that's the only recording I have playing with my pops. Thanks for bringing me back!
Lage has the same ear for arrangement in the moment as Miles. Neither of them just solo, they play notes or space and bring in musicians in as their imagination of the tune demands.

Aside from the wonderful music he makes, I love to watch Mr. Lage play- he seems to be enjoying it tremendously. Occasionally he smiles as if he's telling a very sly joke and he's sure that we get it without explanation - I hope we do. Tremendous in every sense.
