It's actually easier to do than you might think. All it really involves is watching very carefully, and counting a couple of seconds in your head when you hit him into the sky. :)
It's been a long time since I did this, but if I remember right, that's what happens, yes. You'll want to defeat his Omen Characters when they appear too, as each one defeated makes him weaker.
ReddMcKnight No you don’t actually get him you just defeat him you get nothing except a relic called “shadow lord” that’s it you have to get to 90% on the player thing in archives.
Ha, I wish. I don't have that kind of ability. I actually don't remember the exact difficulty it was on. I do remember this was the Early Preview version though, and difficulty selection might have been different then.

Do you mean for use in Shadow Lords? As far as I know, you can always select him, regardless if it's complete or not, but I could be wrong too...
If you own the character you can select him at the screen where you are assembling your team
