I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding of the relation between polling rate and input delay. Polling rate just describes how often your controller reports data per second, so it only affects the theoretical minimum input delay. Polling rate does not guarantee that the data sent is recent. A 1000Hz controller can send data with 1ms delay in between, but each data point could be let's say 40ms old. So the real input delay would be between 40ms and 41ms. There is no way of testing this delay with Xinput test or the simple Gamepadla software. However it is possible with hardware such as the Gamepadla GPDL latency tester, which is able to compare the real moment the button is pressed to the moment the PC receives the signal. Hope this helps.

@@shycreation9418 This is nothing new, I'm just pointing it out since the two get conflated so often, as in this video.

@@x-isospassraels point is still valid. Polling rate doesnt equal input delay and the difference can be drastic. Even if it isnt in this specific case.
For example the large input delay on at least my two KK3s is only occurs wireless. There could be unit to unit differences.
On the two connection methods they have vastly different latency but same polling rate.
This isnt surprising because xinput test shows the time between the last poll and the recent poll -> not between the button press and the recent poll.

@@x-iso The test is a step up for sure, but my comment is about what input lag and polling rate actually mean. Listen from 13:25 onward and you will see what i meant by the conflating of terms and it is the reason i commented. Not to be a prick, but to help clear up some of the confusion around these terms.

Hey, thanks very much for clearing this up. Even as a controller player, I am contemplating switching to PC, with very low input lag being the prime motivation. I want to get beyond 120fps/Hz, as well as be able to completely disable vsync. Since I'm an Xbox controller user, I wasn't really banking on OCing my controller on PC anyway, but to realise that polling rate is kind of like refresh rate, is useful to know. Thanks again.
Also, yeah, I was looking into this controller as a Switch player, too. Doom Eternal on Switch is a lot of fun, despite the high input lag, but those awkward paddles are a hard pass for me - they seem to resemble the original Elite controller's overbearing paddles.

I have ordered 2 KK3 gamepads. Both have a defect:
    - On one controller the backbutton mechanism broke after 1 day
    - on the other gamepad the right stick stops working sometimes while pressing down L3.
    Regarding Input delay:
My units both have almost 40ms input delay while connected WIRELESS. XInput test still shows 1000hz with consistent sub 1ms intervals.
WIRED the total system delay goes down to about 6ms as you would expect of a 1000hz gamepad. Tested with 1000hz camera and 240hz display.
This difference alone shows that polling rate isnt the same as input delay.
Spassraels comment is below 100% correct.
Its the same with monitors: Higher hz usually give better input delay, but there are more factors such as the time it takes for a pixel to change colour and processing...

  • @jcanzonetta
    @jcanzonetta 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

    I like the follow-up.
One example I really like when comparing polling rate vs input delay is to think of mail. If you were to send a letter every day via USPS and via email, they both would have the same polling rate. But the delay of sending the snail mail would be greater than the email.
When doing the polling rate test, that first delayed message is not just how slow it takes for the tester to start winding up the sticks. It includes that initial, input delay. Every message after that is indeed 1 ms after the last, but those messages would all be delayed from the initial input to some extent.

I had a defective kingkong pro 2 stick, it had drift and it squeaked/creaked and vibrated for a while before the drift started. I contacted their support email, mentioned I was capable of soldering a new stick on since they're identical to replacing any other stick. They replied quickly, and sent me a replacement part for free, they didn't even ask for a purchase date, a picture of the controller, or anything.
I had also experienced a weird issue with a joycon stick from them, where it would move from left to right incredibly quickly when viewed in the Switches joystick calibration page. I mentioned it in my correspondence with the customer service person, and they sent me one of these for free, as well.
10/10 customer service in my opinion, I've never had such a simple experience getting parts from a company before. I'll most likely buy this controller as well due to how they handled those issues

The buttons in King Kong 3 Max aren't mechanical switches, they are solenoid rubber hybrid cannister switch buttons. When you open one of those cannister switches, you will see just the rubber plug(which is how it is tactile) inside, without any spring or mechanical interface for actuation beyond just the conductive impact pad. You can still swap in the replacement King Kong 2 Pro switches for actual mechanical buttons that have spring tactile function on the King Kong 3 Max though. I've already done this to my testing unit, and I've had close to 2 weeks with the controller now and reported all my feedback to Gulikit and AKNES to my findings. I hope this helps with further/extra info.

I always love your controller reviews. Great job overall. Not sure if you find this comment but I would like to bring up a point that you could possibly bring up in a future video and also test for this in future controllers. One of the problems with the KK3 Max is that you cannot connect it to PC in switch mode using the dongle. You can only connect it in switch mode using Bluetooth. The problem with that is the X-input does not transfer gyro controls. Only switch mode does. Yes, you can use the controllers in-built gyro aiming. But those don’t work as well as gyro aiming in switch mode. That’s because on the PC you can use Steam input to calibrate gyro controls (but only in switch mode). The in-built gulikit gyro controls never work well. And even if you do the in built calibration, it’s too sensitive and you end up drifting a lot. If you move over to switch mode and let steam software do the gyro calibration, all drifting goes away. But in this case you are stuck to using Bluetooth and thus get 125hz delay.
Now the 8bitdo Bluetooth pro controller allows for all input modes (X-input, d-input, switch mode etc.) to be paired using their dongle. But only using there beta firmware which they sent to a few people. But you can find it on Reddit. Somehow they never released the beta version officially yet.
Anyway, point is that switch mode should not be limited to Bluetooth. I play regular PC games in switch mode simply because steam software then reads the gyro inputs and you can calibrate gyro using steam and not the in-built gulikit controller calibration (which just sucks). With KK3 max if you want decent gyro controls you unfortunately have to rely on 125hz Bluetooth connection.
Please start docking points for controllers not allowing all modes to be paired via the dongle. As per me, all controllers should behave like the 8bitdo pro Bluetooth controller which allows any mode via the dongle (albeit via beta firmware), and it works great.
Thanks for a great review. And hope you look into this for future controller reviews.

I have an apex 3 and while it's crazy comfortable, using 2 paddles on one side really sucks compared to a set up like the one gulikit has here. I also really liked the interchangeable buttons as I play on both pc and switch.

Ordered my KK3 max preempting your review via Amazon. Watched review Wednesday. Was excited. Got controller yesterday. My experience yesterday:
    - this was not plug n play. had a ton of issues connecting via wired, finally got it working after swapping usb ports several times
    - then took several more tries swapping usb ports to get the wireless dongle working
-right thumb stick popped off twice in my first 2 hours playing with it. How? My assumption is the following: was happening when dragging down on stick to aim in WZ with the ps4 KFs attached. Having to grip extra tight to keep that ‘improper’ KF in place may be that add’l pressure needed to get them to pop off. Yes certainly some user error here but I did have the issue.
-I find the triggers to be incredibly mushy and take up is awful when the stops/shorter setting is enabled.
-the paddle orientation/ergos are not good just like you mentioned. Dare I say unusable for a controller only being used for FPS games. They’re constantly in the way.
This is just my experience. In summary I don’t feel like this controller is as plug n play as it could be. And I experienced almost every issue you brought up in this vid. It’s definitely usable and a ‘good’ value but I’ll be returning mine and most likely breaking down and ordering the envision pro. I hate supporting the big brands that refuse to use HE sticks but the other issues on this guy are hard to ignore.

KK2 has mechanical buttons, because its actuated mechanical, has no bending of silicone, spring tension. BUT the new orange ones do have a dome inside, no spring (if the video of the teardown is true on YT tearing it down).
that said, i have mine on order and already had an extra pair of KK2 mechanical buttons with my KK2 order so i will just pop them in.
it would be a great value if Gulikit will make more kinds with different feel of those buttons imo.
I dont believe that it is a bad controller overall, i just so love the feel of the KK2 but am disappointed with the connection lag of the KK2 with the switch and hope the KK3 is better with that.
also Gulikit can make things way better if they offer different button combinations and colours, i would love to have white buttons on my black controller but this is not sold separate for switch layout (ABYX), you can do better Gulikit, you made a name now stand by it for the community.

I am worried about the back buttons being too fragile though after a reddit post showing it broken already due to the design. I also agree with you on the ‘mechanical’ face buttons. They do not feel mechanical at all, literally the same feel as a xbox controller lol. Overall its not bad for 80 bucks, but it has left me a little underwhelmed. Also with all 4 paddles on the controller it is very uncomfortable to hold, idk if i just have weak ass hands but it hurts my pinky fingers to do all the gripping lol. Cause if you play with a dual sense controller that is overclocked at 1000 Hz with a 1 ms response time. It feels much more responsive. I’m telling you dawg, you really need to test that specifically… because what I said in ur last video was that it FELT like I was playing on 30 fps with the KK3. Only complaint I have is the sticks getting scuffed on the rings. I’ve had that happen to a lot of controllers tho. They need some different friction rings or sticks. I believe it’s the rings tho. I've had a few Guilikit controllers now, (also have the Steam Deck upgrade kit) and I've noticed a bit of a pattern for their QC.
When the controller is first released there seems to be a fare bit of inconsistencies with their manufacturing tolerances. This leads to issues like the buttons sticking, and the trigger stops not matching on the right and left sides. But as the months go on they usually tend to work these issues out and they become very consistent.
This pattern is fairly common for most companies, but these issues are magnified when it's a smaller company like Gulikit, especially when they're trying to keep their controllers cheap.
Does this excuse the QC issues and weird/false marketing with their "AI features" and "Mechanical" switches? No, of course not. But it's still a good thing to keep in mind if you get a crap controller and have to return it.
Also I've seen this exact same pattern with QC on Retrofighters controllers. I still love my Retrofighter controllers too.

I was considering this controller but ended up getting the GameSir G7se. I was actually going to buy a Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra but 1( I’ve seen more than just a few bad reviews on it and 2) I just bought a brand new Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset and I’m extremely disappointed that there is no integration for example being able to control the volume and mute right from the controller. It’s actually really disappointing. With the KK3, it’s also got a bunch of negative reviews on Amazon and I’ve seen more than just a few negative reviews on it on YT. I’m looking to upgrade from my Elite Series 2. I think there's a weird semantics thing going on. The controller was never advertised as using microswitches or mechanical *switches*, the buttons were advertised as being mechanical, which these... also aren't but the original version definitely was. However, one thing does open up with these in that they're modular, and that's what they should have advertised them as. As long as it has the stem for the buttons to fix to, fits inside the box, and has a carbon pad making contact with the PCB, the guts of that button could be whatever you want them to be. Clicky, tactile, or linear, it's kinda whatever you want. I think modders could have a field day with these things.

In a perfect world I think it would come with swappable thumbsticks, mechanical switch button option, and it's own software to more thoroughly customize the settings/adjustments. It would be awesome if you could change the right stick sensitivity to more granular values between the 50/100/150 presets, etc. Honestly that is probably going to keep me playing on my 8bitdo Ultimate a bit more than this, although I do love the paddles on the kk3.

I think the term mechanical is being confused with something clicky etc. Mechanical can be anything having a separate return device or just made of parts like a spring what is pictured in the images. HOWEVER I have read a lot that what is in the switch is not what is in the images for gen1. It could still be argued the fact it has a plastic plunger and housing containing a dome and contact that it is still mechanical. Either case these were one thing I saw as a detractor to the controller itself. I would prefer a simple membrane sheet that I can replace without solder or whatever attachment these make to the PCB. Truth be those clicky switches in the elite2 are no more mechanical as they are just a metal dome instead of a bit of silicone and carbon, and more prone to failure. I have gone through 4 elite2s in less years because of those switches in the shoulders, dpad and rear paddles. They last anywhere from 1month to 9months.
