ICI in the UK also had an OS called MTS for the DEC PDP11 in the '70s, MTS being Multi Tasking System. Primarily written in RTL/2 which was also an ICI language, very basic and terse, if you typed something it didn't understand it simply said "No!". At the top end was the full dev environment, compiler, linker and disk storage, that would typically run on an 11/45 with a rack of RK05 disks, right down to diskless images for industrial control and monitoring applications typically running on an 11/35 with a few K of core memory. RTL/2 was quite basic too, but it included a CODE statement allowing you to drop down into assembler for bits the language didn't support, which was quite a lot, ENT PROC RRJOB = main() in todays languages. I'm quite sure that not many people today will have heard of it.
@@rhodaborrocks1654 That's so interesting! I love how people modified and wrote custom software and operating systems for old mainframes back in the day.
Started my career as a developer for a bank on a IBM 3090/400 with VM/CMS and TSO. First programming batch, later dialog stuff with PL/1 exclusively. This was almost 40 years ago... I'm feeling old, but also proud... It was quite a ride - and now we have AI. Un-be-fu**ing-lievable... 😊
@ErnieTechsLittleMainframes Thank you, you are doing great work here and I hope that many of our generation of developers and admins will find your channel!
Wow! What a passion project ... seems like this could be practical for education - since it is surprising how much mainframe software is still running at large volume data processing shops (tink: banks) even in 2025.
Subscribed :3 Looking forward to this series, I know for sure Dillard's the Department Store chain still uses CICS on the IBM mainframes and i've seen them use it.
@@TheDiveO Dull disclosure, I went to FreeSounds, downloaded some dot matrix printer and fan sounds, played with them in Audacity and made the background sounds. Then I went to Udio and had AI make an intro tune so no issues with copyright. 😁
Do any of these include TSO (Time Share Option) interface? How about the ISAM and DB2 databases? Is there full support for JCL (Job Control Language)? ... and all the other mainframe tools?

People were quite passionate about their heavy iron experience and with good reason
@ernietech-101 well yeah because they are awesome!
I used to work at University of Michigan IT, and worked with folks who still had fond memories of MTS.

That's awesome. Stay tuned, I'm going to try to dig into this mainframe world as much as I can

Used a 370 in my early college years in the 90s, glad I caught that system in operation, I loved it
Then hopefully this channel will be fun
Fascinating! I have been looking for something like this, glad you are making these videos, thank you and all the best

My thoughts exactly
I have always had a fascination with mainframes. Looking forward to watching your videos and spinning up some of these old systems to play with.
Very cool stuff! Subscribed!
Thanks 😊
Your usage of nanode gives me the idea to set up one of these on a raspberry pi or some similar small device, a cute tiny little mainframe! 😅
Absolutely. RPi is a perfect platform for Hercules and MVS

Im glad youre making videos on this
Me too
Sounds fun :)
Did you on purpose went to a noisy room when recording your audio in oder to make it sound authentic...?
Yeah. I like being overly dramatic 😊

Yup. They will. Have to cover the basics first
are the videos coming soon?
Absolutely. Got stuck in jury duty for a couple of days
