I am surprised Gu thinks eastern is the more modern grip.
Started off with the Eastern but incorporated some Semi-west as I got better. Way easier to attack with Eastern, creating angles and hitting spots. Semi-west is very useful for covering weaknesses of the Eastern grip, i.e. high balls, defense, easy access to depth, consistency. Most pros use what they're accustomed to and adapt from there, which is probably what people should be taking away from this vid.
Fed says eastern's the best. I agree. It's the most versatile. You can flatten it or hit heavy topspin. You can return low, skidding balls or loopy high ones.
I’d start kid with eastern grip. The palm is pointing to the direction of the ball which is the most natural to beginners. Later they can move towards semi for easier spin.
The best forehand for you is the one that feels the most comfortable and natural to swing. Put the butt of the racket against your belly button and grab the racquet from the top, and that's your Eastern grip. Pick up the racquet off the ground, and you have the semi-western grip. Hold the racquet like a hammer, and that's your hammer grip, aka Continental grip.
Gu still has some old observation there. Djokovic in recent years has changed to very standard semi-western. On the other hand, Sinner is more extreme semi-western than Djokovic.
Been using the continental grip since the 70's. You can get plenty of spin with it, just have to angle to racquet and your arm / body right before the hit. You get more power with a continental too. I think less chance of injury / tennis elbow as well.
This is insane. The semi-western is the best grip without question. This isn’t even debatable.
Who is screaming in the background of the video? OMG
Semi Western... no debate needed
No debate ? Federer, Del Potro , Dimitrov, Tsitsipas, Alcaraz (eastern towards semi-western). I am sorry but these guys have pretty damn good forehands too. There are advantages and disadvantages with any grips. I personally switched years ago from semi western to eastern.
I can now easily hit hard flat very low balls and get very good spin if needed. Low balls are much easier to return and more control on service returns. Downside is on very high balls I switch to semi western …
@@robertl.6919 Sure but if you're asking which one is better, I don't think there's debate. Most of pros use a semi-western grip. It's the best fit..sure it has its downsizes but not that big...low balls..is that really a problem ? it's less effective than an eastern grip but you can hit a good forehand with the semi-western anyway.
@Lucian86 Your argument should be '' it's the most popular grip" and if it's the absolute best, why Federer didn't use it ?
Coaches in clubs told me they teach the semi western to kids because it's the easiest to master. Not because it's the best. It's the same for the one handed backhand.
It's much harder to master, but again, those who did master it have an advantage on the 2 handed. Same debate.
@@robertl.6919 ok let's debate...which one is better in your opinion and why ?
IMO semi-western. Why ? It just ticks all the boxes...easy to master, comfortable, great for spin and great for control (especially when defending). Negatives? None imo.....low balls is not a problem..the learning curve is a bit longer for that but soon enough you can hit them very well with great control. The result of all that is that most ATP pros use it (not a reason then but a natural consequence).
Then of course you can have a great forehand with other grips (even full westerns). It's just easier with a semi western.
I think.someone.is killed in the back
wow absolutly meaningless subject
Cmon man, no need to comment this
@ ok im sorry
