    I’d love a video on Black Falcon Press and your goals related to it or your influence for creating it. Is it an avenue for helping put out your own material (since it is a business does this make taxes easier for you as an author?) or is it avenue you intend to use to help other authors down the line? Super interested!

      Thanks for the Video clip! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you thought about - Proutklarton Winner System Plan (google it)? It is a smashing exclusive product for discovering how to write publish and sell your ebook in 7 days minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my m8 at very last got great success with it.

    at what phase in book development should one get a copyright registered?

    • @chriskirkland6976
      @chriskirkland6976 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ijeoma Nwaogu Honestly, as soon as you have a tangible manuscript, you should. I did before I ran it through the editors. If you plan to make major changes like a chapter? Wait. A few words? Don’t worry, it’s still protected! Good luck :)

  • @ShoshanahShear

    where do you put copyright for a journal or workbook? Is that also in the front or does it go at the back of the journal? I have seen both, which is preferable.

Do you have any idea where foreign writers could research this further?

    I want to self-publish a novella, but I am confused. Do I have to pay money in order to copy-and-paste the Copyright page? Or can I do so regardless? I don't want to get into trouble for copying something I am not supposed to, which doesn't really make sense since I already own all the rights.

    Hey Kristen, I love your videos because I find them really very helpful!
    And I had a question which is not related to this video..
    Do all the chapters of a book should be of the same length?

    • @EmilynWood
      @EmilynWood 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In case no one else replies, nope! It's up to the author what length every chapter will be. It varies person by person. Find out what you like as a reader and what is appropriate for the kind of book that you're writing. You /could/ make every chapter the same length, but again, it depends on the pacing of the book that you want. Shorter chapters go with fast-paced books, while longer chapters go in more literary books, generally. Not all the time, though.

    I'm uploading to KDP. How am I going to know my ISBN if it's getting assigned to me when I publish? Also, if I'm quoting people (obviously crediting them) am I still able to claim copyright?

    • @cnlicnli
      @cnlicnli 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Emunah13819 wrote, “Also, if I'm quoting people (obviously crediting them) am I still able to claim copyright?”
      Yes. You’ll likely have to register your ebook via the US Copyright Office’s (USCO) $65 on-line “Standard Application.”
      In the “Limitation of Claim” section of the on-line copyright registration application, you can identify/list those works you didn’t create. You only need to provide a short description, like “third-party quoted words” or something similar.
      In addition, you can send the USCO (the Registration Specialist who will review your application) a note (“Note to Copyright Office (Optional)” section) explaining what third-party contributions you’re disclaiming or other issues affecting your registration. You’re limited to about 1995 letters & characters in that section, so you’ll have to keep it short.

    Do you copyright under your govt name or author name? Does it matter?

  • @maxc2781
    @maxc2781 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello there :)
    Thanks for the video as I'm getting ready to publish but there is so much research.
    Not really convinced I need to copyright it.
    So my question is:
    As this video is 5 years old, is this information still valid?

    • @cnlicnli
      @cnlicnli 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @maxc2781wrote, “Not really convinced I need to copyright *[register]* it [with the US Copyright Office/USCO].
      Yes, you *REALLY, REALLY* need to timely (quickly) register your literary and other creative works, especially if you’re listing, selling, licensing, or distributing them on US selling platforms.
      The copyright notice printed on your book page is, too often, worthless, unless it’s backed up with a timely US copyright registration.
      If your work is copyrightable, the USCO will issued (mailed) you a copyright “Certificate of Registration.” By statute, you’re timely registered literary works (registered within five years of first-publication) are granted *“presumptive legal PROOF” (via prima-facie EVIDENCE)* of your copyright authorship, copyright ownership, and copyright validity. When someone challenges my copyright authorship, I just show them my issued Certificate registration number. My copyright proof is the issue Certificate and not necessary my original manuscript.
      To retain the strongest copyright claims, you must *“timely”* register your works either BEFORE the infringement starts OR registered WITHIN three-months of their first-publication dates. With a timely registration, you’re eligible for statutory damages from $750 to $30,000 and up to $150,000 for WILLFUL (intentional) copyright infringement AND recoupment of attorney fees AND legal costs (at the court’s discretion).
      As a general rule, creative works not timely registered with the USCO are, too often, NOT enforceable for money damages, as any money received from an out of court settlement or post-trial will typically not cover your attorney fees, making it un-economical to pursue infringers without having a timely registration in hand (notwithstanding those works whose actual damages and/or disgorged profits are SUBSTANTIAL and PROVABLE).
      Joshua Kaufman, a Washington, DC copyright attorney, addresses copyright + the economics of NOT timely registering your creative works with the US Copyright Office: In TH-cam’s search box, enter *Joshua Kaufman: Copyright registration* to find his link.
      And Gordon Firemark, a Los Angeles IP & entertainment attorney, summarizes seven benefits of timely registering your copyrights: See firemark.com/2015/01/06/7-big-benefits-of-registering-your-copyrights-early/
      @maxc2781wrote, “As this video is 5 years old, is this information still valid?”
      As of March 2024, the copyright registration filing fees have increased: It’s either $45 or $65 to register one un-/published (literary) work. However, you can save money by group-registering from two to ten *UNpublished* books in one on-line registration application for a total filing fee of $85. Again all books must be UN-published.
      I’ve posted links to find up-to-date USCO registration tutorials on TH-cam. Search my handle *@cnlicnli* in the comment’s reply section to find those links.
