You'll get better with movement. If you keep remembering and playing! There are tons of movement options. Rocket Riding, Slam Storage, Core Nuke, you name it. They're all easy-ish to learn, with time. Like Rocket Riding. You won't always get it on your first try.

They didn't actually grapple anything - they whiplashed to break the electric panel (but missed), and just happened to bounce up from the slam storage at the same time the hook hit the wall. This is made clear by the fact that the trajectory they were sent along did not line up with the direction they whiplashed in at all.
