I was about to drop 50+ on some faux fur for a costume. Thankfully now I can just utilize all my leftover yarn. You saved me a lot of money and tears, thanks!
Some 30 yrs ago, I had made my son a lion halloween costume. I had made the costume itself in fleece and threaded through the hood lenghts of acrylic yarn, then untwisted it and brushed it. I had made the ears with suede. And painted his face with an elaborate lion pattern. Needless to say, it was a big hit. The school even asked me to replicate the makeup for a show they had at school. And there was my son, opening the parade with his costume and makeup. He was so proud! And so was I. I also used this technique to make a cushion. Worked great!
I don't even need to make this I was curious what it was. Once I started I couldn't stop watching. You are great at explaining and are very enjoyable to watch!!
I really so this thorough tutorial. And I really like the little moments where you smile at the camera as you talk. You are just the most charming person. It was easy to follow along because you are just so enjoyable. I'm not feeling well and this video was soothing. Thank you for brightening my day!
Isn't this amazing? During all the years I've been a yarn crafter and watched a bazillion yarn related tutorials, I've seen plenty of people spin yarn from "fur" or roving. But until now I've never anyone do the opposite - unyarning! It lends an awesome effect and would be great for so many different projects. Thanks for showing this!
Yavonne, this video came up while I was searching for ways to crochet fur. I overlooked it about 5 times and finally just watched it and this is going to be SO MUCH BETTER!! My daughter is in 3d grade and making a Valentine's day box for her class party. She just learned that they're picking a winner for the best box! So she came up with the idea of doing a unicorn box ! She is going to use origami to build the horn and wings (Yes, I know unicorns don't have wing's but she insists on wings), but we needed new a good way to cover the body with fur and THIS IS IT!!!! I'll have her use a hole punch on the cardboard box and pull the yarn through those holes to cover the entire body. I'm so excited! She'll have a blast! I'll post pics when she's done. Wish her luck!!!
I was watching this and remembering a "fur yarn" Cheshire Cat scarf hoodie I had crocheted that had tragically FELTED in the wash! Your technique of straightening the fibers may SAVE my favorite project by UN-Felting it! I'm going to go buy a carding brush and a flat iron! Thanks so much!
Those faux fur mats always get messed up in the wash. When I had a pet grooming salon someone brought in one of those for us to wash. That's when I first realized I could treat it like actual fur on a pet. So I washed, shampooed, blow dried it and used a pet brush. It came out beautifully!!
I know I am late to the party, but WOW. I have made a tail from braided yarn but had no idea how to attach it to cloth. This is perfect for making custom sections of faux fur for my clothing designs!! Thank you so much!!! ❤❤❤❤
Yvonne. You're freaking brilliant. And so generous to share your tips and knowledge. I can't wait to show my daughter this video... she's going to flip out with happiness and creative possibilities! Thank you so much for being you!
Yvonne Williams Hello Yvonne! What do you call the thing that you are making that you're attaching the fur to?? It's like nothing I have ever seen before!
That's pretty cool! I like how detailed you are with your instructions. Your video for the chainmail bra is great! I've been looking for a tutorial on that for awhile and stumbled across it a few weeks ago.
This is the most helpful thing I have ever seen! Sometimes you need a fur look and can’t find the color you need anywhere so this is a great way to work around that. I love it
WOW! That was awesome to watch, you could use as fancy hair on handmade dolls or funny dolls lois of other things! Really enjoy that your very good teacher and very sweet you give very clear instuctions!!! Thank you very much for sharing hugs Liz x
Very cute. This is what I like to call your angry or warrior music in the background, love the whole "preparing for battle sound!" Loved the video also, thanks.
I'm working on a Buffalo head, I'm already practicing the eyes and I will use this idea for the longer fur around the head. That's two of your ideas in project. I love your channel! You're so creative and on a budget.
For anyone wanting to get a brush, its called a slicker brush :) Yvonne I love your videos and have been watching a few a day. All crafts I had a go at and then moved on as I just like to know I can do things. I wish Australia had a bigger con culture but sadly we only have a few a year.
Hi Yvonne, I have just watched you making fur out of yarn and i have to tell you for a person like myself who has very little in the way of budget and tons of wool laying around this is pardon my English, Bloody brilliant. I can do the same thing on a fabric stiffener and thread it through there to give me the same effect. I am so glad i stumbled upon you this year its amazing as a crafter how much more i have learned just from watching you craft your magic. Thank you so so very much. i am blown away by the wool to fur magic. Faux fur is so bloody expensive to buy and when you only need a little bit of fur it makes no sense for me to buy a meter of fur for 6 inches of fur on a doll outfit. Thanks again Yvonne you rock girly thank you. Every time i watch you i learn something new. I am totally gob smacked.
Absolutely loves your videos...very informative and loves the fact you talk everybody through the project..the music in this one video is annoying and wish you would not have used it. Wanted you to know that your one of the very best "How to videos" on TH-cam and loves your crafts...thank you tons and tons....
Thanks, Ron, I am glad you like my work. I am still learning all the time how to make my videos better and some of my experiments with music and editing were not successful. Thanks for your input and for watching!
Yvonne Williams Loved this video, I think if you found a way to turn down the music volume by one bar and the beat by .25 beats per minute it would complement your natural style. I have never seen a better instructed presentation - well done. Thank you for the hard work and your time. P.s. Subscribed today.
I agree! The music was hurting my head because I was trying to listen and learn. Some soft instrumental music (Celtic, maybe?) would have been really complimentary. 😊
Thank you. This is awesome. I just spent five dollars for a small piece of faux fur. It’s going back to the store because I have a huge bag a white yarn and that brush...time to get busy. Thank you again..😊😊😊
I am making troll cutout for a friend and I needed to find a way to make the hair and felt like I completely wasted yarn, I'm so THRILLED I came across this video. Very easy to understand, great to watch and ur smile reassures that it's so easy anyone can do it. Thank for making this video!!!
Thanks! Love your attention to detail and just where your mind goes naturally. Time to time I've messed about w/pulling a brush through loose sections of yarn in my freeform crochet projects, but never thought to inject heat into the equation.
Thankyou Yvonne for sharing your wonderful talent with me,im making a large gnome out of a very large detergent bottle, and was stuck wondering how to make a beard for him,as we are in lockdown due to covid here in Newport, South Wales, UK, and I'm using up my scraps of material and wadding to fatten up his tummy,I have a few balls of wool and couldn't work out how to make the beard, until I come across your very helpful video! I love love love your beautiful dog,we have a golden retriever called Rosie, who also loves to walk in to make sure I'm ok when I'm crafting and to have a hug and a kiss too!I've subscribed to hopefully learn a lot more, you're a very talented lady and have a lovely way of teaching us all,I'll definitely be back soon!love and hugs from over the pond!xxx
MAnnnn!! So cool. You could get like 10 different colors of brown, black, or blonde and really make it look like regular fur with different color tones. Such a cool demo.
Acrylic yarn burns and turns into this icky hard plastic mess when heat is applied to it you habe to be careful of how hot the tools you use on it are lol.
I've just started doing crocheted amigurumis and was checking out how to do felting on crochet when I discovered your video! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this and your fantastic tutorial! It's great to know that I can do this with acrylic yarn, especially RedHart!
On more idea. You could sell premade sections to others to use in their cosplay or crafting projects. The profit margin would be huge. And wouldn't those make awesome Pom poms for those keychains I am always seeing. Geesh, I would buy the "homemade fiberfill" too for projects
I had learned a little bit about this awhile back from a friend (who made tails for people in school when it was still super popular). I learned a few really good tips, tricks, and ideas here, which is great! I was trying to find an easy way to attach faux fur made of yarn to some pants, as I'm going to be a satyr for Halloween this year (2018). I love that you just punched holes into your material and how you kept them in by just using another piece of yarn! it makes things so easy, and I don't know why I didn't think of it. also, I love the straightener idea! my friend had never used one, as people liked when the tails were fluffier, but I was looking for a different look.
Have you tried a latch crochet hook? You can use it to pass the yarn through the leather and the yarn through the yarn. You would only need one tool and the scrap wire wouldn't break all the time. Just a proposal 😉
I saw the patten laying in front of you with the yarn / fur and was given a beautiful idea for my BJDs (dolls). I now have to make a leather / fur corset for my werewolf. Thank you so much for sharing this. I only hope I have the time to get it done before an upcoming convention.
Neck Deep Jay I actually braided a lot of yarn together like a rope, then tied in some bunches of purple and black yarn and brushed those out for my Cheshire Cat cosplay a couple years ago. It took a while to do, but then I laced in some small LEDs on the little string with the battery pack, so I had a light up tail. I put a carabiner clip at the top and wore it attached to my skirt, where it clips into the belt loop then the battery and switch go in the pocket. It was super fun to do, and was a great hit at the conventions I go to :)
Yvonne Williams I've been experimenting with the yarn and it's coming out perfect. My plan is to make bundles of fur and then add them to the outfit somehow
This video is so great, thank you for sharing Yvonne! I spent a fortune on craft fur making Christmas gnomes last year and figured there had to be a way to make my own. Thank goodness for TH-cam and more importantly you for making the best instructional video I could find on the topic! If i want to pre-make beards for my gnomes, do you have any good suggestions on what I could use to attach the yarn to instead of leather? TIA for your reply. :)
I'm a little late but this is such a great idea. I plan on doing this for gnome beards also. My gnomes are small so it should be pretty easy but I'm going to sew (by machine) the yarn onto grosgrain ribbon, brush out the yarn and glue the beard to the body of the gnome before I add the hat. That way, the ribbon and top of the beard will be hidden. Yvonne's method of preparing the yarn is genius and I'm going to do the same thing, also doubling it like she did. I can make the ribbon as long as I like and the yarn as full as I like. Grosgrain ribbon is sturdy but not bulky and should hold up to the tension of brushing the yarn. Just support the yarn and the ribbon when brushing out the yarn. If you've made some beards, I'd love to hear what you came up with to make your gnome beards.
I guess for longer fur would you ... use a wider tube??? I'm making a creature with different lengths of fur. Thick and longer around neck and tail... I'm interested.
Hey, Jennifer! I have found that with the yarn fur it is limited by the weft of the yarn (if that is the right term....) the fibers the yarn is spun from are only so long, and that limits how long the final fur can be. For longer fur I would experiment with cutting the yarn long and only brush out the last 3 inches of it, if that makes sense :)
Yvonne Williams I just realized that I in fact have seen your videos. It was nice to meet you at Graceland. My husband sculpted the female Predator. You do absolutely amazing work.
You are great at explaining and are very enjoyable to watch!!
lol, thank you Nerissa! I am glad you enjoyed watching!
Haha same! I too was curious! ! Very nice video and explanation :)👍
Me too. You have a really pretty smile.
Nerissa L
Same here! Well done video with such a beautiful smile. Very delightful to watch!
Yvonne Williams I'm fascinated, but confused... What is the thing that you are making???
Haha, when the dog butted in to get some love, that was adorable. xD
hehe :p
I really so this thorough tutorial. And I really like the little moments where you smile at the camera as you talk. You are just the most charming person. It was easy to follow along because you are just so enjoyable.

@Lisa. You are right, by the way, how are you? looking forward for your reply.
I love the way you speak. Its very clear and not a lot of stuttery breaks and ums and ahs. Makes it very easy and pleasurable to listen to.
You’re perfect, you don’t need any music. Bless you
I was watching this and remembering a "fur yarn" Cheshire Cat scarf hoodie I had crocheted that had tragically FELTED in the wash! Your technique of straightening the fibers may SAVE my favorite project by UN-Felting it! I'm going to go buy a carding brush and a flat iron! Thanks so much!

Love this idea! I actually use all my tails of yarn after I crochet and brush them out with 2 pet brushes and respin it into new yarn!
how cool!
Oh Yvonne! I needed this for a rocking horse I'm working on!
BLESS YOU! This was exactly what I was looking for and WAAAY cheaper than faux fur. Thank you for this tutorial💚
Thanks for sharing! It's God's gift and blessing when I'm trying to make faux fur! It's so well done!
Thank you so much for this! And the idea to use the extra "fluff" stuff in the brush to make polyfill? GENIUS!
I typed in the search “how to make faux fur” and you did not disappoint. This is perfect. Thank you!!!
This will be a whole lot cheaper than just buying fur for my fursuit! Thank you so much! Your a life saver!! ♡
Yay! I am glad to be helpful!
I know I am late to the party, but WOW. I have made a tail from braided yarn but had no idea how to attach it to cloth. This is perfect for making custom sections of faux fur for my clothing designs!! Thank you so much!!! ❤❤❤❤

I am so happy I found this video, I am definitely going to try this and see how well it eorkd as the beards to my gnomes!!
I would love to know if you attached the beard to some kind of material first and then glued it to your gnome....? Thanks!
This is exactly what I was looking for to make my gnome beards . Thank you .
Ooh thank you, ive been searching for cheap fur to sew on hoodies, didnt know i already had it in my yarn box..thanks hon

Why am I watching this? I don't even own yarn or need furr... I got my cat 😀
Petra Ražov you're funny
Lol
Lool
I don’t have a cat but I have two dogs, and they shed like crazy. I could probably make a sweater out of all the fur they’ve shed over the years 😂
Petra, lol!
This is the most helpful thing I have ever seen! Sometimes you need a fur look and can’t find the color you need anywhere so this is a great way to work around that. I love it
nice way to put it lol ''un-yarn the yarn''
hehe, I'm glad you like that!
Incredible! Who knew yarn would go back to it's original state as hair! WOW! You are so talented and explain everything very well!

Omg! You are awesome!!! Your instructions are so clear. I wish many videos were like yours!!!
I'm gonna try this yarn to fur method in order to cover a whole outfit in fur, I'll update when i get it finished.
Hope it comes out great
my thoughts are with you; it can be daunting, but I think that will come out awesome! please do keep me updated :)
Yvonne Williams I've been experimenting with the yarn and it's coming out perfect. My plan is to make bundles of fur and then add them to the outfit somehow
How did it go
The pvc idea is ingenious!
This is beautiful! Thank you for taking the time to do this tutorial. It's very helpful!
Thank you for your kindness and for watching! :)
great video! is there a way to make pom poms doing this? thanks!
Thank you! I am not sure; I have never made any pompoms, but I sure it is worth experimenting with! :)
I had to try this with my crochet ponies. And the result was perfect! It moves like real hair and is so soft and amazing!
Jennifer Gordon oof hi
Jennafer Gordon HEY! I love your name ha! Lol...
Yvonne Williams I just realized that I in fact have seen your videos. It was nice to meet you at Graceland. My husband sculpted the female Predator.
You do absolutely amazing work.
Thank you Yvonne. I am now going to make the fur for my Gnomes and also for other projects
