EXO had an unusual amount of high-grade talent invested in it right from the start. It’s like magic when they’re together but every member is strong enough to stand on his own and produce work that deserves just as much attention. Plus Kai is a god.

EXO members have always been able to showcase their own choices as solos in their concerts, so that, for example, Chen tried a more rocker style. For Kai, his first big solo project hit hard when he did it. Deep Breath is a contemporary dance which he did when all other Kpop dance was urban. It was a project he wanted and it produced shock waves at the time, it was so different to everything else out there, but he was trusted and allowed to do it. So yes, they are not always as promoted as they could be. For the majority of the time they are restricted to projects that sit well with the overall Idol group image which can cause difficulties, for example Chanyeol has expressed his frustration when trying to develop his rap career. Even so, yes you have to look for them, but the gems are there.
