Listen to this song without the awesome performance and you will hear that it is an amazing song that stands in its own right. The problem is that once you see Kai perform, it's hard not to visualise it every time you hear it.
EXO members have always been able to showcase their own choices as solos in their concerts, so that, for example, Chen tried a more rocker style. For Kai, his first big solo project hit hard when he did it. Deep Breath is a contemporary dance which he did when all other Kpop dance was urban. It was a project he wanted and it produced shock waves at the time, it was so different to everything else out there, but he was trusted and allowed to do it. So yes, they are not always as promoted as they could be. For the majority of the time they are restricted to projects that sit well with the overall Idol group image which can cause difficulties, for example Chanyeol has expressed his frustration when trying to develop his rap career. Even so, yes you have to look for them, but the gems are there.
