It's the steel tip, with the weight of armored man and horse behind it charging at great speed that sunders shields and pierces armor. Joust lances are made of weaker woods to reduce the chance of piercing any sort of armor or shield.
battlefield lances are completely different from sporting/jousting lances though. Battlefield lances are just heavy long spears not the thing in a cone shape that's often used in games. Plus while some would absolutely break they were not designed to break unlike the jousting ones, though if it gets stuck in someone you would just let go anyway to switch to the secondary weapon. A metal handguard thing could indeed be added to a war lance if wanted but it was a separate piece, not a part of the lance.
Sorry but I would need a source for that because I was shown some replica lances irl and those thing do not break easily, they are massive. I imagine it is rather that people lost the lances due to lever forces than the lance actually breaking
The amount of disdain I get from fantasy enjoyers when I tell them combat lances, are in fact, design to break, is unreal. If lances did not break you would most likely break your arm and fly off the horse.
You apparently deserve the disdain - lances were used all the way up into the modern era and no the rider is not going to get yeeted off into outer space.. instead the target is going to get impaled or knocked down. Jousting lances and lances used for war are different.
@@thenightfox8497 The only thing I see here to concede is that I should edit the comment to refer to Combat Lances. Extra fun fact; there where, for a relatively short time, lances designed to snap around the "hilt" so that another could be attached.
even cuirassiers who charged and thrusted at full speed with straight thrust focused swords (practically can't cut) instead of spears (even more feedback down their arm) didn't break their arms and fly off. Jousting lances were designed to break to reduce the impact on the target, not the wielder, as a safety measure. It's even understood that breaking your lance on target was a sign that it would have hurt the opponent if it wasn't a sporting one, thus granting extra points.
@@qgqsrg1 Although what you say on jousting lances are true, I would have hoped the edit to explicitly stating War Lance would keep the topic there. My comment pertains only to war lances not the game/festive pieces of the jousting lance.
Seems like some guys weren't on your discord so they couldn't hear you when you asked them to wait for the siege of drakenhof castle Or they were just natives from Pissenburg : D
try riding at 30 miles an hour with a couched lance and hit something, do you think the kinetic force would be good? the lance was one of the most fearsome weapons of medieval warfare. they brought more than one lance, those were expendable like arrows
The gate bug is not a bug. I believe it was implemented intentionally for the Ai to break the effectiveness of rushing the gate with overwhelming force. If it wasn't intentional, they wouldn't have carried it over in WH3 and even buffed it by allowing the Ai to open the gate indefinitely while also removing the ability to force it closed by moving a unit close to the gate opening.
@@rdbiv6874 How doesn't it make sense? This series is extremely janky under the hood, in a technical sense. It is perfectly possible (the consensus among the coomunity, too) that they just can't fix it without fucking up a lot of other things. Why do you think that every single patch creates new bugs? Also how does the AI use it tactically?
If you do another one if these you should consider running mixus lords so all 6 players have better faction leaders Or maybe try the southern realms mod
Warlances did look a little different. But yes secondary weapons were used after the initial impact.
yeah and they were made out of hard woods to rip through armour

Lances normally get broken in historical battles and then the knight would use a secondary weapon like a sword.

It is definitely a bug, and it carried over in WH3 because they can't fix it.
@heinz8233 that makes no sense, especially when you consider the ai uses it tactically in battle.
