You want the front board on bird houses to be rough for them to be able to claw/grip when they are climbing back out of the box and/or notch the inside or add cloth or something brom the bottom of the nest to the hole for them to grip as they climb out. If not entirely smooth side houses can become a death trap. Also...recess the bottom between the sides up into the house so it's Not flush with any of the sides and then cut bottom edges of perimeter boards at an angle and assemble with the long edge out to serve as a drip edge and make the houses dryer and last longer. Overhangs on all sides of the roof, short on rear & sides and long in front also keep things dry and slow the rot process.
Looks good and the metal around the hole is a good idea. You might want to reduce the entrance to the size of a quarter. Smaller song birds will be attracted. Otherwise a large allows Jay's and starlings and they will destroy the eggs.
I plane mine down smooth and then glue 2 boards together to get thickness. I use the shavings in my wife's little gardens.
I love pickets. One of my favorite boards to work with.
Nice design. You might consider adding a c-hook to the side to keep predators from opening the box. Also, consider adding a few ridges on the inside to serve as a ladder 🪜 so the baby birds can climb out easier.
Tyfs and Happy building!
It would need to have indoor plumbing for $100 dollars
25-50 painted nicely imo
Very cool designs- modern bird houses! 😊
Nice. I would add some way to secure it on the bottom of the house to the fence. I think a cleat only would make it susceptible to being blown down by wind. Just a little metal tab screwed from the fence to the birdhouse.
Very cool design.
Thank you for teaching us!!
So awesome beautifully made love these❤😊
Nice project, looks great and can make so many variations. Thank you for the video
Glad you like it!
Love the design mate! So eye pleasing
Thanks a ton!
At one time I had nine sparrow houses I built in the backyard. Loved watching them and hearing the babies chirping for food. Unfortunately they attracted too many ferel neighborhood cats so I had to get rid of them. Gotta say I don't miss cleaning them out every year. They get pretty gross inside.
I hate a feral cat. One mating pair of cats and the offspring can produce 28000 other cats in 7 years.
very cool, I'll try it!
Thank you
Fantastic!
Very nice!
Love those!! May try to make one!
Go for it!
I came here from the Christmas party. I do hobby woodworking too!
Good stuff
Thanks
The inside of the front should be left rough so the birds can climb out
Bird feeders sell much better than birdhouses. I’ve built dozens of each using redwood and by far bird feeders are definitely more popular in N Cal. Birdhouses are a specialty item that is hit or miss as far as successful nesting a bird feeder is used daily. I spend $20 a week on birdseed
That’s it? $20 bucks!!! That’s a deal!! I spend between $80-$100 a wk on suet and feed cuz the squirrels are constantly doggin their food.. or the sparrows are shooo’ing/pecking it out of my feeders to the grass then the morning doves and squirrels gobble it all up down there!! It’s a never ending battle over here!! I just wanna feed my favorites.. my woody’s, tits, nutty’s, Dee Dee’s, Wreny’s, Janko’s, Jays n Cardi’s, n if I forgot a few friends, they know their names n who they are when I hear them n call them in for food lol!!! I LOVE MY BIRDS!! They even follow me when I take a walk to the corner store a few blocks away, they really really bring me so much joy, I can’t explain… n they’re really very smart, I love them n they love me.. or my food lol!! But seriously I’m about to buy a halo! Or one of the weight feeders, so the squirrels can’t get in! Cuz they’re starting to piss me off for real!
I made over three hundred from the ones I built, then I had to pay my neighbor a thousand because I used his fence pickets.😳
I can’t believe people pay 100 for those . I’ve making birdhouse for a long time it would be really hard for me to get that where I live
Gotta branch out. I've seen some for $150 or even $200+. I'm not sure if these are being put outside. Some people might be using them as decorations inside.
Doug, I'm with you, In a previous comment he mentions &60-200. I don't think they would sell for $20 where I live.
@@davidwatson4510 noone pays 100$ or more for a birdhouse. show me.
So per month how many do you sell? Is this seasonal or yearly l? Thinking about getting into this if it’s profitable. I do other wood working but wouldn’t mind looking into this if it’s constant profit
Do they need the back doors in case the husband comes home early?
Chickadees would for sure 😅
Nice looking design & colors for humans, but the birds don’t really care. In fact the rougher inside enables young birds to climb up & out as needed. I find that rougher more rustic bird houses are preferred over fancy painted houses. The latch/hook on back only works on flat areas (like fences), but not practical for hanging in other locations. All-in-all, a good build.
You're right, these are mainly for decoration/collection. One of the first birdhouses I built I put on a post, but it wasn't practical in the house I was living in at the time.
The Birds aren't the ones buying them though ;)
Nice houses but would never sell for $100 in my area. Maybe $45 or $60 because of the price of cedar.
Nice build, but I don't see the plans on your website
Nice if you put the dimensions in black so somebody could see it a lot better you can’t see which size they are
Do they come with wi-fi?
Would squirrels gnaw on the opening to make it bigger and get inside make it there own nesting house?
The portal protector/ring is supposed to prevent this from happening.
their vs there
Where did you get the picket? Didn’t know they were available near Boston?
St L?
I bought these at Home Depot, but I just looked and they're not available in Massachusetts. You can try calling a fence company that does cedar fences. Ask if they'll sell you some leftover boards.
Come to RI they have them
Lowes in Salem NH has the cedar pickets for under $2.50.
Your exterior designs really make this simple birdhouse outstanding. And you can sell these for $100? I am impressed.
The price varies based on the design, but they've gone from $60-$120.
@@slightlycrookedworkshop There is no way you are selling those for $100. But nice way to trick others into watching your video. Very nice looking design and work however. Good job.
@@randyl1170 $100 is on the lower end for a lot of these. Other people charge more. If you can find a market, or create a customer base, you could have people paying much more for these. With social media, it's not difficult to do.
Do you have the dimensions for the cuts available? I'd like to make these with my kids. Couldn't find them on your site. Thanks!
www.slightlycrookedworkshop.com/plans/mid-century-modern-birdhouse-plans
What would you call that wire you cut to insert in the flap please?🤔
It's an aluminum rod.
The price tag is still on the bolt cutters… planning to return them? Nice job mate, but I do see these at craft fairs & swap meets for $30-50.
Hell yeah these things sell for 30 dollars max! 100 dollars is click bait!
where is the $100.00coming from? not in my neck of the woods $30.00for all three here.
but i like your design.
You need to find a different market.
Why no perch? And why not use a 12-penny finish nail for the hinge?
Perch doesn't really fit the style, not all birdhouses have them. You're free to make it however you'd like.
Perches help predators.
Are the cedar fence posts untreated??
yes they are
First where on earth are you getting such nice looking fence boards? All the ones around me are bowed, cupped, really weak. Hard to find a single good one
Believe it or not, I get them at Home Depot. I've come to find out that there are a lot of areas in the US where big box stores don't sell cedar pickets. Here, they're everywhere.
if your selling those for 100 dollars each ... we need to talk cuz i have a box of cheerios together we can convince people there doughnut seeds!!! 🤣
No idea where you’re getting $100 for these but my birdhouses are way more polished, all dowels,no metal at all, laser engraved designs, etc and I only get $55. I would charge $25-$30 at most for these.
I've been able to sell them for $100...sooo...maybe you're not finding the right market.
I paid $99 dollars for the same bird house
That's great...quality is probably only 99% of mine. 😂
The spruce fence pickets are a good product for making these bird houses but make sure they aren't Pressure Treated
Why not just use cedar? They'll hold up a lot better. There isn't much of a $$ difference when you're buying a few pickets.
No way you can get 100 out of these birdhouses!
You may not pay that but some one will. You can buy a hamburger for $2.00 and some people will pay $15.00.
@@henryheinbuch yup, looks at McDonald’s prices and Five guys prices lol
@@gregc1203 i don’t know about 5 guys but Macdonald is stupid expensive and its not even good. I prefer burger king as they do have coupons. And Wendy’s has their $5 bag which is a great deal and everything tastes great.
Very nice man. Really creative
What do you know? I built rustic birdhouses for many years and was always amazed at what people would pay for them. Most ended up on a coffee table or fireplace mantle.
People the more you stand out from the pack with different designs is what makes you $$$$. No one wants to buy the same old thing every one else has. Also, people like things that can decorate their homes with.
If you charge that much you will sell less. $35-$40 is the going rate for cedar bird houses. I sell more cedar bird houses than I can make.
You should always leave the outside rough if using raw wood, and never paint them. They should weather to blend in with its natural surroundings.
I was gonna say the same thing... I also hinge the top instead of the side panel..
Why did you use the metal rod instead of 2 nails?
Bird houses should be 100 feet apart…
They're only side by side for pictures. I only still have one of them and it's in a different location...but, that's good information to know. I wasn't aware of this.
Ah, I believe he was sawing the different designs not making a nature preserve
Great ideas!! Yes he could $100 in the right markets. People pay crazy $$ for things that they like. Ladies would buy those just for decorations inside their homes. Anything is worth what someone will pay for it.
20.00 would be pushing it
You should go check out birdhouses on Etsy.
Your fence looks like a 6th grade display for the anual parent teacher conference,
Thanks?
Your spelling isn't going to go down well with those teachers!
@@SouthSideLimey hahaha, I've even got spellchecker turned on 😵💫
@sally6457, What makes you put down others you don't know? I hope you get treated better that that.
@9q7a5z not meant as a put down at all, just a comment on how the work was displayed, all top quality work in a multitude of creative colours all displayed together,
Why does your mind go to likening somthing children's best work being some kind of insult?
Who in their right mind would pay $100 for that house. Lucky to get $15
Some people hang them inside for decoration. There are other styles of birdhouses that sell for $200+
Show us where this sold for 100$ please?
14 sold - www.etsy.com/listing/95565309/birdhouse-modern-craftsman-the-camera?ref=hp_active-mission-recs-rv-3-1
I guarantee your not going to sell those where I live for that much. Aint no way.
Then you should try to expand your market.
I don't think birds can afford 100 dollar houses.
If a bird orders one, I'll give it to them for free.
@@slightlycrookedworkshop 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Nice job except. You should NOT paint a bird house. The paint smell will keep them away.
Maybe $30 to $40
Here is one that went for $80 - www.etsy.com/listing/1042204186/mid-century-modern-bird-house?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details
Sorry, I can't imagine anyone forking over $100.
There used to be a guy that got $150, for similar birdhouses, all day long.
I don't use wood anymore just pvc boards they last forever
Strong wind comes along and down goes that bird house using French cleats.
Cool, thanks for the feedback. I haven't had any issues in 3 years.
Nice looking birdhouse but I can't imagine the mom and dad birds having to try to get into and out of that house a few hundred times to feed the babies without a perch. That has to be a rough entrance without a perch...
Birds do NOT require a perch. Predators, however, do ...
Be careful when building bird houses because birds are very sensitive to any kind of chemicals, I would avoid treated woods and be careful with your finishes, also it is recommended to keep the services of a birdhouse clean and the interior because mold mildew or filth could kill the ones you love.
yikes!
modern mid century? Isn't that an oxymoron? And that like saying build an old new house or something like that? I just don't get it
You'd be building a new house in a style that was popular at the middle of the century. That's what was considered to be "modern" around 1950.
@@slightlycrookedworkshop that is a very good way to explain it, thank you!
$100 😂
Don't laugh, give it a try.
Definitely not worth a $100
I guess it's an opinion. The only thing that matter is whether you can convince someone else that it's worth $100.
I paid $99
maybe clean the camera lens.....
Lol good luck getting more than 10 or 15 bucks for that basic thing
Thanks, but I don't need luck. I was selling several of these a month for $75-$125.
Omg!! Terrible
Thanks. I'll try to make the next one Not Terrible.
