  • The Diawl Bach has been a personal favorite whenever I am prospecting a favorite lake or a perhaps a new one. It's generic nature allows you to suggest a number of prey items such as scuds, chironomids and small baitfish. This is a pattern with almost countless variations such as the holo cheeks I demonstrate on this version. Bottom line the Diawl Back and all of its permutations is an excellent stillwater pattern

Hi Phil have you had success with this fly in the States?

Yes I have. The Diawl Bach and it’s many variants are staples with my fly boxes.
Thankfully both trout and the patterns we use to catch them know no borders. 😃
      Cheers, Phil

Hi Phil.. I like the looks of this fly, from my rather short experience fly fishing I've learned that trout love any fly with Peacock herl. I fish mostly stillwater so I'll be sure to give this a try. Just out of curiosity how do fish this fly?...Thanks for your great videos!

+Stryker 2 Hi I often fish this fly using either a Midge Tip or floating line with a long leader, 15 foot or greater. A clear intermediate line with a shorter leader is also a good option. I use a slow hand-twist retrieve coupled with prolonged pauses and the odd quick 2-3 inch strip. I have had my best luck using a Diawl Bach when fish are feeding on chironomids or scuds. When fish seem fussy feeding them peacock herl based flies has often paid off.
      Thanks, Phil

+Philip Rowley I haven't played around with different lines yet, this is a good place to start. Thanks for all the tips much appreciated! :))

+Philip Rowley One more question...what clear intermediate line would you recommend? There's a million out there and being new I'm very confused! LOL! Thanks again..

+Stryker 2 Hi i am a huge RIO fan and as I am part of their Advisory Team my loyalties ride there too. I would suggest the Camolux, either in its original form or the new low stretch configuration. The Hover line is another excellent choice. i have become a huge fan of this line in recent years. It's slow 1"per second sink rate is ideal for the type of lake fishing l like to do.
      Thanks, Phil

How is this fished Phil ? Under an indicator ?

+Bob Taylor Hi Bob, i suppose you could fish this under an indicator to suggest a chironomid pupa. I tend to fish this on floating line and a long leader, hover or clear intermediate. A peacock body with a Mirage Opal Mylar shellback works well for me when trout are on scuds. Peacock flies have always worked for me when fish are on scuds. Hope this helps. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask.
      Thanks, Phil
