Larin Thomas has been stating that the grind of a knife is more important than the blade steel on how it performs. Different blade steels take different edge angles, and the polish on the edge also affects the edge retention. Some steels do better with a high polish, and some do worse. Whoever put the edge on this Spyderco knew what they were doing. Good video. Thanks
I’ve had my PM3 LW in BD1N and needed a video to start and my spark my curiosity again… my dood DOODY never ceases to amaze. Get on today and POW, exactly what I was thinking and needing. Psychic MF lol ✌🏼☑️💨😎
Bd1n is so strop responsive that you could have stropped it on the wood piece your cutting on and the edge would have came right back to shaving. And yes 100% bd1n really needs a fresh well done edge when you get them. For some reason the factory edges really preform poorly on bd1n and I assume it's because it's very temp sensitive so when it brings the temp up on the belt it just fatigues the steel and you end up with a edge that rolls and chips very easily. A well done edge and you will be in business... all in all it's a incredibly good steel for the money it can be had for.
I’ve been using a Byrd Raven2 BD1N, for the last few months as my EDC Work knife. So far, I’m very impressed with the slicing capability, edge retention, blade stoutness, and easy of sharpening with ceramic and stropping. I like it so much, I want another one.
Love my k390 pm3. It's an exclusive from Bento Box, they still listed them last time i looked. There was a little bit of lock stick but it worked itself out with use.
I have several Spyderco knives. Until I got my pm3 lightweight I never thought I would like any of them more than my pm2's. For me it's a real close tossup now.
Good to know one of their budget steels does alright and with a k own quantity like the Para 3. I wish they'd do more SPY27 since they went to the trouble of having it made.
I like the bd1n on my manix 2 lw. It holds and edge for a reasonable amount of time. It isn’t hard to sharpen at all. I think it’s a great steel for a work knife.
Nice test. I have para3 LW in the same steel and love it. I’ve seen it ranked near S30V in Carta tests done by knife steel nerds and it strops back better than S30 for me.
I have a cruwear pm3 under the tree. cant wait for xmas. I saw in your other video that you have AWT on your Sage 5. Those are also coming to go on either the Magnacut or Maxamet Sage in my drawer. I am leaning towards the Maxamet one
I bet people think the CTS-BD1N has the same flaws as the CTS-BD1. But it's not the same steels, and the N version is an significant improvement. Maybe CTS-BD1N should have been renamed to avoïd confusing. Probably the same as all the 440 steels. 440C is way better than the 440A, but one letter is not enough for most people to believe it's really better. Should be called "440MX Ultra titanium" for some reason 😁 Edit : i prefer a good 440C than a soft M390 with a poor heat treatment. Less expensive and good enough.
THE EPIC DOODY CUT TEST: I have that same BD1N on a Para 3 LW (murdered-out black) and LOVE IT ! Definitely gonna have to look into some AWT scales .. u make it look SO Good DOOD.✊🏼☑️🔥😎
Shady just be aware that the LW para 3 with the FRN scales is different than the non LW para 3 and it will not swap scales like you want it it. I have the same lw but it is missing the inside liners and does not swap. I found this out after looking up scale swap for the para LW
That was definitely interesting been curious about bd1n pretty dang impressive. Now if spyderco would offer me an frn para 3 with k390... still not sure it would replace my leafjumper but i sure would love to find out. Im telling you you're missing out on the leafjumper lol such a slept on knife.
I don’t understand why people don’t like bd1n. I read IT’s toughness isn’t the greatest but I haven’t had issues. My manix 2 lw & para 3 LW both have it
I think it’s because people think of or confuse it with BD1, ya know, the extremely similarly named lesser steel. I wish they named this steel something different.
My first spyderco is a para 3 lw in bd1n. My experience with it has been pretty good. Seems to be a step above vg10 in my opinion. I’m not a knife steel expert so don’t take my word for gospel.
Nice vid , always wondered myself about that steel but yeah u will love the para3 n they don't have a k390 but the lw s90v is bad ass I have that with awt scales n it rocks. Also I been wondering what do u use for stopping compound?????
I’d like to know how it compares with the other SPY27 steel that is being offered for slightly more - they are about the same price though, which makes me think that they are either quite similar, comparing to something like s30v, or the SPY27 steel isn’t as “super” or popular as originally hoped…?

True that
That steel did way better than I expected. This squashes it, gotta carry my Para 3 today lol

do you remember sharpening it? :)
It's a Spyderco. I haven't seen one do bad yet. Thanks Doody.
Para 3 is such a solid blade, punches way above its weight class!
I’m starting to see that!
Been waiting for this!!!
Hell yeah! Been curious about CTS BD1N and it seems like it held up fine! Dope vid Dood🤙🏻
My first proper knife purchase was the para3 LW. It really could have been the only knife I needed to buy… but you know how that goes
Haha yep. Could be a one and done
@@doodysdaggersif anything I would buy another para 3 with g10/ micarta and or a cruwear or higher end steel
Nice build that mirror edge looks great and the purple screws makes it better

Yeah i love my LW para 3 in that BD1N, sharpens easy and stays sharp long enough

Benchmades look great, Spyderco's come razor sharp. That's the difference.

Lucky!! Haha nice man!
Maxamet is soo sharp but just do not try and sharpen it yourself, so brittle
Looks good from my house 😊
it did quite well...nice....i should probably send you my other lacey edges now haha(max and s30)...can do a lacey vs factory comp maybe

I found this out after looking up scale swap for the para LW
@@Mysmi Oh Snap very much appreciate that ! Is there a known (Good) FRN specific scale set for this model ?
Woke up to a TH-cam notification about 2 of my favourite things- Doody’s Daggers and BDSM.
I then rubbed my eyes and took a closer look…
😂
Gotta get me some of this steel. It lasers through that paper.
It really does

@doodysdaggers stoked!

I’d like to see a wharny Para 3
Ha ha, I said that to my wife the day I seen they released the PM2 Wharncliffe. That would be super DOPE. ☑️😈💨✌🏼
Same, or a tanto
Your CTS-BD1N by far out performed mine. I may need to put a better edge on mine but I am still getting S30V or better to replace it.
Yeah gotta be the edge

They do have a k390 para3. Bento Box exclusive
That’s a pretty badass blade. Is that the one you were offered in trade a couple livestreams ago?
Yup
I sent mine to Spyderco for a sharpening and they sent it back screaming sharp, not sure on how long it will hold it.

Awesome video 👍 Quick question, where did you get that strop you used in the video from?

🤠
@@doodysdaggers you’re the man! Thanks!
I think it's safe to say a lot of folks sleep on CTS BD1N ( Spyderco 63 HRC).
In my opinion the spine whack test doesn't matter bc you don't use the knife that way
Does anyone know when spyderco sends their special event knives ?
Mine came pretty quick last time
What do you use on your strop
Home made diamond spray
Be careful with the spine wack! Watch the video of the guy spine walking the Microtech MSI !!!!
This or the kunwu pulsar?
Hmm… Pulsar
@@doodysdaggers thank you. I think the pulsar looks great. I'll have to grab one.
The complainers have never used it or don't have it. Or, are 1st world Diva's
Blade geometry trumps all other factors vis-a-vis cutting performance. Sorry blade steel snobs,)
True
For the price, and the bd1n steel it comes in, this knife is mainly for those who drank the spyderco kool aid and are willingly getting ripped off
