Do you know where I can get the sheet music? I LOVE the way it feels, especially when the left hand departs the dotted eighth and starts playing the stuttered 16th pattern. (BTW…I feel it in 4 as well.) I'm a rudimental drummer (Cavaliers background) and I'd love to write a grid exercise for this piece, but I'm trying to understand the structure. I'm gathering that the piece doesn't start on the downbeat of a 4/4 measure, right? If so, then the quarter notes enter on the 4th beat of the 8th measure. That can't be right, can it?
rustyhuto Hey - yup, you can grab the music at akirhythmpress.com Depending on how you conceive it, it does start on a 4/4 measure. In this score, he has a few 4/4 bars and then a 3/4 bar, but honestly, I just feel quarter notes throughout, without a specific meter.
It's kind of like a lead sheet - you'll get all of the notes that both of us are playing, but we've changed up the order and orientation of things a little bit on this recording.
I was trying to understand why I wasn't hearing the pan... but then realised that they are not using the correct mallets. I wonder if this is meant to be that way?
Andy uses magnets to mute the the steel drum and lower the notes a semitone in his right hand and uses a chopstick for percussive effect for the melody in his left
How well the two voices blend.
I really love how the marimba and steel pan sound together!!! So light and joyful
the combination of these two instruments is so magical and beautiful and calm.
Oh yeah?? Listen to the MINECRAFT SOUNDTRACK
This has got to be one of the coolest videos Vic Firth has posted in a long long time. So much information, GREAT piece

I’m playing this piece right now but I have no idea how to approach or practice something like this. Anyone have any tips?
Sounds a little like C418...
I like it
I thought the exact same thing.
don't have the words!
Wow, Andy. I'm just agog, dude. Seriously.
Can someone explain to me how steel drums work?

There are different versions of the score on sale in different keys. Anyone know what key they are playing here?
F# major. The steel pan version is the only one that requires poster tack.
C major
Time signature please?!?! Is it 4/4 and 13/16 with the dotted eighth pattern crossing the bar line?
I feel the whole thing in 4 - but the LH is in 31/16!

I just bought this on iTunes, but actually I prefer the version presented here. This version is just a better mix.
The original recording is solo pan!! ***** 's project is one of my favorite's that I've worked on, and hope to do it again some day.
