I guess this is an example of a song that (lyrically) was made possible by Bob Dylan-because, as Donald Fagen said, “Dylan is the guy who showed that you could write a song about absolutely anything.”
Seeing photos of the discovery touched me so profoundly, I was brought to tears...yet didn't quite understand why. Listening to Fagen's lyrics, I realized that those cave painters were extending their faded yellow-green hands into the future to touch their descendants, us, lovingly and hopefully.
Perhaps the cave painters heard the call of the future. Of posterity. Or perhaps they just felt the imperative of the artist to create. This is a nice song, and Steely Dan was/is a superb band.
The song that made me a fan. Aurora, Colorado. Lowry AFB. I heard it in the halls of the barracks. Finally after hearing it for the third time, I had to find out who this was.
Instrumentally, I think this lineup played very well, but it's clear that Donald has trouble singing as high as he did when he was in his 20s. Then they should play it in a lower key
I asked a young spanish girl I work with about the caves and like all the young girls I work with she just looked at me blankly and went back to her phone.
I know the type. I have to instruct people on technical issues and sometimes I can’t even get them to pay attention because of their damn phone addiction. I wish I could time travel to about 1981 and just stay there. The music alone would be worth it.
1.25X is way too fast. This is slower than the original but not nearly that much slower. I get about 75-76 bpm for this one, and about 78-79 bpm for the original. Only about 4% slower.
Best song of all time. There, I said it.
It’s magnificent
I agree 💯
Unprovable statement😂
Can't complain!
It’s in the top 25 . The remaining 24 would be all Steely Dan songs too
RIP Cornelius Bumpus and Walter Becker!
Musical sophistication at its best. ❤🎶
GxD
RIP Walter, you understated messiah of cool..
This song just... has the perfect mix of chords. Funky min7, longing dim and dom7, curious 13, sad min, and the titular maj7
The climb-down after the chorus - love it.
The climb down is incredible. It's that that I use to tell other musos about the song. Pure class..
From New York to Altimara and to Hollywood this is a time travelers ride! RIP--- Walter Becker
And don't forget Napoleon in Pretzel Logic.
@@AStanton1966 pretzel logic is one of my favorites!

Jesus, imagine being as cool as Donald Fagen!
Donald and Walter were touched with immense talents. Simply put the best man.

I thought I knew all the SD songs and happened on this on my Alexa. Mind blown.
The first song I ever heard by them. Took my head off. All those chord changes. 🤩
Masters of the delivery of fine music (c).
This was always a cool song!
That was the first thing they taught me in art appreciation. Those damn caves in Espana. The oldest record of art known to mankind.

Não tem igual, esse som arrepia até a alma. Arranjo simplesmente incrível!
Wowapalloza! What an awesome live performance. And what a lucky good sound and vision capture.
Las pinturas de las cuevas de altamira son realmente unicas y maravillosas realmente se merecian un tributo con este gran tema
Seen them 4 x's Never heard this live. Nothing like a cool groove

Perhaps not perhaps
@@RobertWadlow292 Perhaps? One of my favorite words...
Tasty licks by Walter at the end there, really accentuated the song nicely

These guys are solid prod
Ahhhhhhh this was great
The sax player said “start the timer, lemme see how many notes I can play”
I love this song.
Slower tempo is OK by me!
Fagen in fine voice.
Miss John Klemmer and the Echoplex. But the sax solo is good!
I love Carlock, but he can’t seem to hold this tune. I’ve seen him play it live twice. It always drags.
High School Graduation-1976.
No sh_t me also!
Came here from a comment on a song called "The Real Folk Blues". Similar to others I thought I knew all the songs from Steely Dan

I can see why they didn't tour.
You think they’re bad?

Before Danny Carey, Gavin Harrison, or Travis Barker, there was Keith Carlock.

Very slow version. At 1.25 speed it actually sounds closer to the original
