During Covid I treated myself to an electrically adjustable table, what is good for computer work is even better for sewing. When I use the machine, the table can go a little higher, so I do not have to bend. But better not get one from IKEA, or you will be able to only sew at a snails pace 😉

When I started my hand quilting journey 3 years ago my husband insisted on good tools. He is a technician/handyman and he knows. Included in our initial purchases was a jet ink printer for the photos which I wanted. The initial outlay was extremely expensive as my intention was to only make 4 memory/photo/story quilts. One for my granddaughter and one for each of my children. I am two thirds into the second quilt and the only thing extra I’ve bought, besides cotton and fabric, ink etc are extra blades for my rotary cutter. It pays to have good tools.

    • @notesfromleisa-land

I always recommend getting the best tools you can afford. They are a lifetime investment, and save time and materials. I see so many people doing hacks for this and that because they won't buy a ruler that will do the job in 1/3 of the time.

I recently purchased a Rowenta steam generating iron. It is a dryer steam (as so hot) than the hand held. Regrettably, it has an auto shut off which is a pain. But performance wise, it is extraordinary.

    • @Julija_Gobere
      @Julija_Gobere  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Ahh, the auto shut off function can be annoying when sewing… But on the other hand, you can always be sure the iron is turned off when not using - my iron does not have auto shut off, so I always check it multiple times when I need to leave the house😅

You make so much sense that I am checking out sewing classes next. I am self taught and have been sewing on my own for a few years yet even though I don't sew often, maybe two or three projects a year, my projects don't seem to get easier. I never have enough light to sew, I have only ONE style interfacing, I bought a set of presser feet that I actually don't understand and I love using patterns but the explanations are so so confusing sometimes it makes me frustrated. And I was thinking of buying an adjustable sewing form until I watched your other video and promptly decided not to 👍🏾. So, obviously I need help 😅. I'm retired now so I have the time for classes. Thank you! Glad to subscribe 😊. Wish me well!

All very good suggestions for future sewing investments. I also purchased the set of presser feet you displayed. It meant also buying an adapter (my machine was older and while it had a snap on foot it wasn't one that was compatible with the new presser feet) to be able to snap on the new feet, but that was a minimal cost. Have gotten so much use from the new feet - mainly the walking foot (how did I ever sew without it??) and overcast foot as it really helps make an even finish on the fabric edges. I do have an extra lamp for my sewing machine, but it was fairly inexpensive and while it does clamp on to the sewing table, it loosens easily and ends up falling off or over onto my machine. So I think I'll have to consider something better for the future. thank you for taking the time to make this video - most helpful and well explained.

Im just a new subscriber, that book you have, there are much cheaper options in thrift shops ofetn. I have a variety of vintage equivalents from the `1940's to 1970's. The instructions are very good, the , and esp for vintage sewers and history bounders, its giving the design lines, and same pictures of how patterns are created from the blocks. They are so cheap if you can find them. I have my own library of modern and vintage ones. Very valuable. I even have a milinery encyclopedia instruction manual from the 1940's. Good advice.

My most expensive sewing tool is considerably more expensive than your lamp but it is worth every penny. It is the Sew Ezi Grande sewing table that my machine sits in. Having a big area to the left where I can lay out pieces to be sewn is something I just couldn't do without. I can fit a 16" design board and still have enough space to sew so I can stack several for a good sewing session. I don't use the purchased design boards as I buy pre stretched canvas boards from a chain store stationary shop and then with a staple gun cover them with wadding.,

Another thing to think about with lamps is the colour temperature and the Ra-value.
Temperature is given in K or Kelvin, 5000K is like the sun. A candle is around 1200K.
The R-value is how good colours is shown. Ra goes between 0 and 100, again the higher the better.
But no matter what, a good lamp is a good investment.

    On interfacing:
It's worth starting by buying a small amount for a project.
Keep the label that comes with it, and making note of what you used it for, and how it sewed.
If it's a washable garment, you may want to note the results 3-6 months of use later.
If it ends up being everything you hoped for, then make use of whatever sales/coupons/discounts you can, and buy a larger stock of it. The exact same product you know you like.
There's really no use in investing in stash of something utilitarian, if it isn't absolutely ideal for -your-purposes.

I’m from a metric country and an engineer so metric is life 😂
But for sewing or anything where you’re using mostly whole numbers imperial actually makes more sense and is easier to work with when you get used to it. Even the fractions 😅
Because it’s much easier to do mental maths with a 12 base system than 10 because 12 has more factors than 10 does. (And thirds and quarters are more useful)
Once you need more than 5mm precision metric absolutely makes sense. But unless you’re making corsets, if you’re out by that much it usually doesn’t matter much

What brand is your sewing lamp?

  • @greenlionguardian

I am going to say no... why; well I am one of the few people who can and will use exact hand sewing skills to excite a project flawlessly. To me there is more merit in the old skills than spending what little extra money I manage to scratch up on things I will not find useful outside one specific purpose. it just takes up space in my already overcrowded space.

Well, I find I need better light for hand sewing than I do for using the machine, so for me, your point is moot!

The prices cited in the video strike me as much lower than what we’d pay in the US. Solid ideas though. 👍🏼🙏🏻

So glad I stumbled upon your video. I was wondering about the reinforced fusible interfacing strap you use for zippers. Where can it be bought, and does it go under any different names. I always use regular interfacing for zippers, and although they help, I'm still not happy with the result. Hope you can help me. Thanks.

      It’s sold as a tape.
Or you can use silk organza but that’s more of a couture use. Or if like me you don’t want to use synthetics

Was wondering if the lamp puts off a lot of heat?

      Hello there,
no, this is a LED Lamp, so it does't turn hot at all. I have one and it works perfectly good.

It’s an LED lamp, so it does not put off heat🤗

I recently bought an adjustable bias binder foot for my machine. It makes doing a Hong Kong finish on linens so easy!

    • @Julija_Gobere
      @Julija_Gobere  ปีที่แล้ว

Oh yes, that foot is so good!🤗 But I have an even better foot for my industrial: you insert bias cut strap (not pressed) and the foot folds and attaches the bias strap with one seam! Haven’t seen similar option for domestic machine though🤔

Idk if steam irons are wildly expensive outside the US, or if I'm missing something, but my standard iron that uses steam cost me MAYBE $25, and it's going strong 5 years later!

She is using a steam generating iron that uses dry steam (v. hand held iron with steam capabilities). I bought one (Rowenta) recently, and it is amazing (but pricey) at 284 USD. It is amazing. (Though it has auto shutoff

A professional steam iron doesn't have a tiny tank inside the iron. It has a big external tank, weighs more, and can deliver steam for hours.

You still get away cheap with the presser feet. 😅 I love my vintage bernina machine and I have a good basic setup, but the extra presser feet are pricy to buy, even if order online, they range from 30-80 euros each!

    • @Julija_Gobere

I’ve heard that bernina feet are pricey, even up to 200 USD in some cases🤔 Definitely puts prices for industrial machines into perspective😅

There is no where in the U.S. you can get a professional steam iron for $200 unless you get a good buy on a used one. I bought one used & still paid $700 for a $1300. steam iron as they are Not cheap

Be careful with that kit of sewing feet. I have one too, and the quarter inch foot was not loose enough to go over the seams so it wound up hurting my machine. I had to pay to get my machine repaired.
