- Hi we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves. Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, we finally get started clearing up the fall-out from storm Debi at the end of last year.
We have some very daring kittens who scare the life out of us, and we get some fantastic news about the sale of our motorhome.

Great content and progress on the land. Please reconsider putting a wooden floor in the donkey shelter - your ground is way too wet and it will rot and become a hazard super quickly. Either leave as a soil floor with straw on top or put down a concrete or stone slab base.

It's wonderful how your children muck-in and help. You are teaching them great work ethics.
Yes we think it's important that they get involved. This will be our legacy to them and they know first hand how much blood sweat & tears have gone into this place.
Consider a shelter big enough for tobys company whatever that ends up being.. goat, donkey etc..
We will build it as big as we can for now. Sam can always increase its size if needed in the future for Tobys' potential pals. 😉
My third-great generation of maternal grandparents came from Ireland to America during the Irish famine. They brought all their siblings over by working every job they could get and sending money for voyages to USA, not an easy feat! I was taught to work and think wisely, save and build your dreams...and never give up, just revise your plan! I see this within both of you...and you teaching your kids "all hands on deck." LOVE your vlog! I am inspired by your Irish/Wales grit, hard work and ingenuity! You are making it all come together...loving watching a dream becoming a reality! Love your "temporary" home too!

It would be amazing to have next Christmas in the cottage but at least we know we can easily do another winter in the caravan if we have to. The cats are so much fun. I think I could rent them out to the local farmers and get them bringing in the €€'s 🤣

Thanks so much Sherry. There was definitely a lot in this week's video wasn't there. I'm just looking forward to getting our beautiful cottage renovated and of course sharing the journey with you guys. I suspect it will have its ups and downs but we feel so lucky to be able to do it.

It was such a mess wasn't it. The caravan is so much better now and feels much sturdier in this storm (Isha) than in the last ones!
Don’t do wood in the floor just keep it natural you can always throw some straw in or put rubber mats on the ground cow mats are the cheapest and lighter also you might think about strapping the shelter down I’ve seen so many go over
Hi, thanks yes we are definitely going to secure his shelter, we know only too well how strong the winds are here. We haven't heard of cow mats so will look into that thanks.

Look out! Here comes the Irish Chainsaw Massacre.
In Australia I too brought a mini chain saw on advice o& my neighbour. Will cut up to 10 cm. I was able to remove all the branches that got in th3 way of hand mowing under the pine trees. I now use it to cut the dead branches to use in my new log burner. So happy. Love watching your videos. Must have watched at least half of them now. So interesting as my grandmother came from Ballyshannon Co Donegal in 1925 to Brisbane Australia. She lived in a stone house like yours. Hoping to get over there with my sister next year. Cheers to you all.

20:12. For your donkey, use concrete floor, or natural earth. Pallets and osb are not suitable. Concrete can be raked out and sprayed down. Even a thin layer of concrete. Earth floor with hay and straw can be raked out. Osb is not sturdy, absorbs moisture and holds ticks, and such. Lots of homestead hard work. Looks great!

Fantastic news about the motorhome. I'm thrilled for you. The frustrating/worrysome months up to now have certainly been a blessing in disguise. You've got so much done in organising and getting to know your land so you are in a better position to commence the work on the house with a clearer plan of how things need to work or be placed. I can't wait to see the work started on the house but remember, please don't overdo it to provide content for us! Go at your own pace and enjoy your journey.
I agree Carole. I think having to hold back on doing the house has given us time to think more about how we are going to tackle it. I think if we had the funds straight away we may have rushed in and made mistakes. That's not to say we won't still make mistakes but yes we have learnt more about the land and what we want/need by sitting on it for 6 months.
We will try to take our time but that 13 month timer for the grant will definitely add some pressure.
So happy your van is sold and some pressure is off. Now the big steps come once your grant is approved. Best of luck and keep up the positive energy! Thanks for sharing your story.

@theirishhomestead I will be honest with you cos your hubby has been so honest in some videos...my mother was alcoholic for 15 years then in AA for 20 years ...she switched addictions to the program and either way, we lost our mother. It was devastating when she used to say AA is my family now etc
After 20 years she relapsed for 7 and all her AA family fell away
I helped her leave her abusive marriage to my Dad aged 79 how brave was that and she got sober again alone
AA works for many but it was created by freemasons who channelled the programs through séances!!
Saving the kitten mid video was spectacular a day the quality of the work you guys do is utterly inspiring

@powerdisney Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sure Sam will comment himself, but I totally understand and appreciate your comments about AA. As his wife, I struggled with losing him to alcohol and then lost him again to AA. I do feel it helped him a lot, but personally, I did worry he swopped one addiction for another. I have total faith in his ability to stay sober without meetings, and I think he is realising this himself now. He has luckily created, via AA, a great group of friends he can talk to in times of need and the removal of some of the big stresses in his life since leaving the Uk has also made a big difference I feel. X

I love the energized envisioning of repurposing! Makes my brain sing. I hate throwing out useful material (not a hoarder), but you've got to have an idea of how you're going to use it. You're on track. One thing, the sheets you want to save - find a way to keep them from flying away in the next storm. They're like wings with out an aeroplane attached. There are people who know old glass, tins, etc. from garbage and their potential value. But, sometimes the value is just getting rid of the eyesore heap someone left behind as quickly as you can.

Really beginning to see the potential of all the homestead land and as you clear each square metre you are seeing how it will be in the years to come. Lots of potential places for setting up benches to enjoy natures lights shows and letting the kids start to physically experience the night sky and what is out there to reinforce their learning, I can see the benefit of small workshop with roof opening to make a cosy night spot to act as the homestead observatory. Well done, and hopefully you both can get a chance to reset your batteries over the next 8 days in readiness for the big push.
Joe, Sam has a telescope he is desperate to get set back up. It's brilliant here as we are in one of the lowest light polluted areas. The night sky here is amazing. I think in the summer it will be on the static deck but an observatory would be a dream.

A bit of advice from a retired tree surgeon try to put the willow timber on pallets or it’ll either root or rot before it dries

At least once you’ve cleaned up you can actually start sorting out the work you need to do. Even if it’s just to get your list of jobs in order to start organising supplies and equipment or other traders. You have certainly all worked hard this week❤

Hi, yes I really want to do a video at some point on this. I will wait though until we have the inspection and do one then with another to follow after the final inspection. So much negativity surrounding the grants it will be interesting to see if we encounter any issues with actually getting the grant paid at the end. I still feel very sceptical about it all.
You have come a long way since you moved onto the property, getting the old hay store cleaned up was hard work but well worth it. Really enjoyed your video and look forward to more. Toby will be happier being close and watching everything that happens, much nicer than being isolated.

Willow is the only wood you can burn green 😮
So far everything we have heard/read says not to! It will burn badly if not properly seasoned. 🤷🏼♀️
You can also burn Ash wood green!
Great video guys, you will soon be have Spring time and longer days to look forward to. A word of advice for your donkey shelter, the shelter needs to be left with open door access and don't put in a timber floor the clay will be fine for soakage, maybe some 804 on it if the ground is wet. Put some straw or wood shavings in one corner for a bed no need to cover the whole shelter. Put a hay rack in the corner that's not beded down. A donkey tends to go lame on concrete floors so avoid concrete. Just basic shelter from rain and wind and he'll be fine. Enjoy

At Simply living Alaska, they renovated a shed into a chicken coop and they put vinyl on the floor to make it waterproof and they love it because it makes cleaning the coop out very easy (and protects the floor from the droppings etc.)
That's a good idea! We are hopefully having chickens at some point soon. 🤞

Big ask, but can I suggest on mornings when the pond has iced over you nip down and break the ice... I knew a couple of people whose dogs ran out on the ice on a local pond. They went down and came up under the ice which was fatal....
agreed. Its very rare for it to get cold enough to form ice thick enough to support any weight. I have a nice long pole so I can break the ice along the edges of my pond

They had such a great time there. We stayed with them, but as the kids had already walked on it, we knew the ice was pretty solid.
