She is quite eloquent and highly articulate. The thing with mythology or history is that it can be skewed in any way to bolster the case of a strong speaker. You must note that when one cherry picks those snippets and goes from one such cannonised idea to the next, you are following the narrative and will inevitably arrive at the same conclusion. But take a step back when this wears off, and you are exposed to a wider framework within the same body of knowledge that she alludes to. It is then that you realize that are equally compelling arguments against why it should not be the way she advocates. Pluralism does not mean taking a holiday from common sense. Freedom of expression does not mean an unbounded celebration of everything uncivilized. One man's nectar is another's poison so what makes her think she has the perfect prescription? It helps to be tolerant, but then again, she loathes the very word and prefers to call it being friendly (whatever that means). Isn't that harbouring an extreme view? I enjoyed the way in which the two speakers discussed ideas. I fully subscribe to the view that such voices must be heard as it is only then that we will realize the thought process on the other side of the fence. If there exists a stifling environment based on so called Hindutva, she would not be able to speak up as openly as she did. It follows that her voice is one among the several out there. The real truth is in accepting that there are varying shades of grey. Lastly, although she makes a case for pluralism, she ends up demonizing something else and that goes against the grain of her own eloquently expressed argument. I rest my case.
No matter how you slice it, she's one of a kind intellectual, extraordinarily articulate. Madhavi madam belongs to a rare breed of academicians, I guess. She's full of life, bursting with ideas, bubbling with energy and brimming with joie de vivre.
A fantastic discussion however the only regret is that these conversations arent happening in local dialects for a larger audience to ponder. The British are responsible here too :-)
My problem is with the comment section. The problem now a days is people can't debate.. can't give a proper statement what they think of.. They just follow.. a single ideology.. a single prospective. And if someone is saying something different then his views.. everyone becomes very vocal in social media. "social media worries". They can speak CONFIDENTLY any kind of SHIT because of any counter argument in social medias. but India is far far beyond singular stories. Believe me guys.. future generations will not respect you.. they will respect the fighters and questioners. Similar things happened in the time of Kalidas, Tulshidas, Manto and Tagore.
This type of story come when you not live in reality and do not give your wisdom. everyone know what they are following why they are following And babur has also a boyfriend and he is also very liberal in gender issue and also kill many woman and and his army rape many women These so called peaceful sufi also kill and rape woman this is beauty parlour of curality.
Shoma! you are a brilliant individual and most suitable journalist of this time. Your guests list too is well chosen on most complex issues. I'm not that perfect in language as you and your guests are but I get all difficult narratives you raise in Algebra.
I think this is a discussion meant to be seen and reflected upon by every Indian. Thank you so much Algebra for bringing a person like Madhavi Menon. I am very much looking forward to buy her book.
Lovely conversation. Thank you for posting this. Just a thought on how you can get folks on the other side of the spectrum.. you may want to find hosts that exhibit some sense of neutrality in ideology (are there folks like that still in Indian journalism?) vs. folks with flat out left liberal leanings.
Madhavi you are fab with the clarity and simplicity with which you speak. Shoma please put a timer at eye level so you dont distract viewers from an engaging conversations by rambling about time
While I agree with a lot of what the professor was saying, I can’t resist saying that she was dishing out utter rubbish when she asked, “Which Hindu scripture dictates that women must procreate?”! I expected such an intelligent professor to have the basic cognitive capacity to recognize that *women reproduce because they have a natural biological and emotional urge (buttressed by its survival value) to procreate and not because some scripture dictates them to do so! * Though I can’t claim to be an expert on Hindu mythology, the professor seemed to me to be trying to _mythologize_ mythology in order to buttress her ideological moorings!
I agree with whatever she has to say. On the makeup bit I still don't get it that shes against makeup and body hair removal yet she sits there applying lipstick and removing arm pit hair and exposing her arms. No men in this world in current times is going to go to an event like this and wear a sleeveless t-shirt and give a talk. Women's bondages is first and foremost reflected in her clothes and the amount of skin that she is expected to show. Hairiness is a sign of maturity and that is why women are expected to be hairless because it emulates a kid. That is what men eroticize- the weakness of a person (has nothing to do with the gender)
Hi Shoma, I took very much interest in watching Algebra. Doesn't this show ask its viewers(Few) to attend your show? I would be very happy to attend it. Indirectly I am asking for myself :) is it possible for me to attend any one of the show?
The fact is that she ignored the ancient Indian technology about fertility which is yet to reinvent. She tried to compare the fertility possibilities with today's advancements and that's not end of the future innovation. So who ever is going to talk about unknown issues or situations they should consider what really do they know about ancient technology and facts and figures as they just talk on assumptions or small particles to create tale illogical and this is how they are making money in the form of writing books. Ex:- Test tube baby wasn't one of the option in 18th century but we made it possible in this era, so if you read articles or opinions in 18th century they said it's baseless topic. In conclusion these authors write to make money and get fame of it because they are fit for nothing to prove what's fact and what's not. The funny part is Narada and Ayyapan had a glass of wine as she was one of the witness who sat while they had wine :) :) Now I realized that how these half knowledge people who are part of media moguls making fools of future generations.
Madhavi is heavily skewed by ideology. Here are few examples; - The assertion that Merabai was driven her unwilling to consummate and bear children is bewildering. Her great work which is widely acknowledged in India was driven by avoidance of what she hated (not be her love and devotion). Yet its seen as epitome of most loving and revered movement. - I am sure lots of Malayalis will take exception to calling Ayyappa as a cult. It’s an extremely insulting for describing a group. - Since gaining independence, India has been largely governed by other parties, yet all the blame for retaining all anarchic laws goes to Hindutva brigade.
Another example of what unquestioned excessive positive reinforcement can do to a liberal. All that she's got going for her is a good command over the English language and of course the ability to articulate rather well. But when you look at the content, it's all rubbish.
talk about greek phil and then criticize hindu god along.. ayappan.. worried about real estate for gods.. etc. what crap make hindus looks ridiculous is sole purpose . muslim friend is just bull shit. he was just a devotee of ayappan and hindhus as innocent they are allowed a shrine for him..
Madhavi Menon is wrong in several ways. 1. Krishna had 1608 wives not LOVERS. They were all offered to him. Krishna did not desire any of them 2. Khajuraho acts are still illegal as it has bestiality. It will remain so till you make it legal. 3. One temple or one book cannot define or represent whole of India, or for that matter any country. Far from that representation, Indian society was highly moral. Thus the British, who used to dance with other men's wives were seen as immoral. Although the practice of caste system is a Hindu sin bit.ly/1ScKYol it made a person with any misgivings in the behaviour pushed down the caste ladder. Ancient Chinese travellers have said Indians did not use contracts and had no closed doors. 4. She is absolutely wrong in saying that Hinduism is a 19C construct. While that is a British attitude, much before the British the word Hindu was already used by the Mughals. 5. Not all Muslims regard Sufism as Islamic as they do not follow the Sunnah properly, and Dargha system is clearly un-Islamic as praying to or through a dead person is not allowed in Islam. A Muslim ruler's unusual way is just a Muslim ruler's unusual way not a Muslim culture, and Islam does not accept gay sex in any form. 6. If RSS was not a disciplined but a hateful force as she says, it would would have destroyed India through its manpower. It's the largest NGO in the world. Please read the right books in order to be an intellectual. womenspowerbook.org's view
