That’s true! But since Minnesota has over 50% of the breeding population, I really think we have to make it our state bird. Michigan’s should absolutely be the Kirtland’s Warbler!
I really liked the Canada Goose family image. Very different. I live in Winona in SE Minnesota and have never seen or got a sound recording on Merlin of that Blue-gray Gnatcatcher but I will be on the look out for one!!
Thanks, Andrew… I really appreciate specific feedback on photos! There was some heat haze coming off the road, so not super sharp but I still like the idea. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are so hard to get photos of cause they’re usually way up in the top of the canopies. Song is in the high range, but Merlin should be able to pick it up. Mature deciduous forests.
Bite your tongue when you talk about replacing the loon as state bird of MN. It's my home state and loons and ruffed grouse are my favorites from home.

It's call defines it as THE northern state and would think something was wrong if others tried to make it their state bird. Can't begin to tell you the feeling that call invokes but then I grew up there and suppose a lot of people who weren't out where they could hear them might not agree.

Ha! I’m only half serious but many states have loons yet Minnesota has over half the worlds population of Golden-winged Warders. Just saying…
