Times where defiantly different back then. It's honestly impossible to survive off of minimum wage now a days all thanks to inflation.
I understand you, I make 13hr full time job but it isn't enough living alone. At least for a decent place here, rent would be 1200$ 1bdr. Plus food and other utilities.
This video is 6 years old I totally get it's impossible now to live off of minimum wage. I also pay $1600 for a one bedroom apartment now.

School doesn’t guarantee a job. Sometimes the “real” job doesn’t meet your expectations. Sometimes it pays less than what others claim it does and it’s not as satisfying as others make it out to be. It’s smart that you’re taking time out to figure out what you want. One day it will come to you. Good luck!

I've never lived in the US so I have no idea how it works there, but here in India and in a lot of other Asian countries, the whole concept of paying rent to your parents for staying in their house is kind of insane. Indian parents usually want their children to stay in their households for as long as possible, and in return the children take care of them in their old age. Retirement homes are not even an option. I can't speak for anyone else, but I feel like the system in the US kind of drives families apart and inhibits close parental connections. Does anyone else have any views on this?

its true... i feel the culture in US is somehow causing too much loneliness and emotional problems for people. being from india its crazy for me to think parents will take rent from kids or kids will take rent from parents.
My understanding is it's not like they NEED you to like pay into the family - it's more so teaching you responsibilities. Culturally, we believe that people who live in their parent's homes and work outside of the home and yet waste that money on other things don't learn how to be responsible with their money. So then when they later have a place of their own, they don't rely on other people to take care of their basic needs because they've already learned how to do so. Now you could not work outside of the home, but many careers in N. America require work experience. If you simply just go to university and then try to get a job, no one will take you seriously since you have zero life skills to show for it. No one wants an employee that feels entitled -- and that's the concern here. Once you become an adult you're expected to take on adult-like responsibilities. It's almost inappropriate to keep living the same way as you did when you were a child. Making a ton of money and not putting it toward your livelihood (ex. rent) can be dangerous bcs then later you don't know how to manage your money on those essentials. Now of course there are many cultures within N. America so all of this is a broad generalization, so is the idea that ALL people pay rent to their parents as adults. The mindset here is that if you care about your children you need to prepare them to live as an adult instead of holding their hand until their married and then boom magically they are supposed to figure it out for themselves. *Please note that I do not think the opposite is true of adults who live w their parents and don't pay rent or those people living in Asia. My reply is merely to assist in the understanding of whyyyy this practice happens. To explain that it's done more so out of respect - just viewed differently. Every parent wants to raise their child in the best way possible. Different cultures may just have different ideas on what the best way of doing this is.
Okay so for me I’ve just finished secondary school and my mom normally does laundry and buys food and all that regular stuff so I offered to give her €20 a week or every two weeks haven’t really decided yet just to help out with groceries and just regular household stuff

You are absolutely right, your job doesn’t define you, your behaviour does. Well done for being so wise beyond your years. It’s quality of life that counts, not how many material things you own/money you have? I have known some incredibly wealthy people who are totally miserable trying to chase their tails, and I’ve known people who are as poor as church mice but incredibly happy with their lives. Life is too short, do what makes you happy and don’t care about what other people think. If someone judges you by what work you do they’re not worth knowing anyway. 👏🏻💐

I am an asian and like most asians i live in joint family. For me paying your own parents a rent is very unusal .. while watching video i asked my father ..do you accept if i will pay u a rent for living in your house? He replied . This is our house . I want my whole family to live in this house together. I build this for my kids not for myself..i really love my father.

Sometimes parents need help to provide for the family. My mom is a single mom I happily give her money toward the rent and utilties. Its not fair to judge that based on your fam.

I'm sorry but I have to say this I watch a lot of videos on TH-cam and I have noticed American people really judge people on what job they do .ie cleaning ..waitress .store worker ect ..it makes me sad as long as it an honest wage packet who cares also I was brought up to respect the janitor the same as the CEO of the company both are working just different job titles .luv ur channel
It is sad. Many people have jobs that contribute great value to society (Mom’s, caregivers, and many more). Many are jobs that others will not or cannot do. Fortunately, there are some of us who do appreciate a good days work done with pride and enthusiasm regardless of the title. We are on Kyra’s channel for a reason.
This is absolutely true. They say in the USA there is no class system, and it isn't quite the same as it is in the UK, it's more flexible, but people certainly judge you by what you do. It's very unfortunate. I think Kyra is amazing, not "just a waitress" as she said some people have said.
Jenny Jen1010 who says there is no class system? We have lower class, middle class and upper class. We also have the terms for blue collar and white collar jobs. I don’t think any country lives without a system. The system determines financial assistance and taxes. In the past our country has had issues disrespecting those who live in a lower class with lower paying job. Thankfully there is a great movement to get people of all walks to respect each other and work together.

“Too long in a job?” That is strange advice to someone who has a job and is able to support herself. Someone who has a strong sense of self-responsibility and independence. So called “better job” does not necessarily translate to a “better life”. Kyra, you have setup this time in your life based on reality, not fantasy....a great foundation for creating a comfortable rewarding life. Keep your day job and your side-hustle. You are excelling at both. Remember your “real job” is contributing to the wellbeing of elderly people who need your cheerful presence.

Kyra. Just wanted to add my voice to the advice to “get a man to support you.” This is old OLD and redundant advice meant to keep women subservient to men. It didn’t work last century and it doesn’t work now. Unfortunately, men often come with debt or will at the very least distract you from your financial goals. There are many good books and blogs written by great women financial experts on the need for women to be self-sufficient.
Having a long standing job looks better on a resume also to employers

1) only spend $50 per MONTH on food
2) just go to work then come home
3) live close to your job
4) don't travel
5) live a minimalist lifestyle
6) have side hustles
What's sad is there are people making minimum wage while working for insanely rich companies that can afford to do better.

I needed this so much! I am 25 and have no idea what I want to do with my life. I can’t commit to studying because there is nothing I’m 100% passionate about. I like far too many things! Right now I am working as a Clinical Assistant at a Medical Centre. I earn above minimum yet at least once a week I have told by my co-workers ‘you can’t do this forever’ ‘you need to become a nurse’ ‘you need to upskill’ ‘you won’t get anywhere in life’ ‘your pretty much the dogs body’ It is sooo constant and they constantly put my job down, it makes me so angry as they honestly think they are far superior because of their job titles and degrees. I love so many different things in life that one job title doesn’t define me. Also I’ve been getting more into minimalism so glad I’ve found your channel.

You don’t need a 4~8 year degree to succeed and be happy. So when people tell you you should be more than a waitress-asked them. How much debt are you in? When they look at you with one eye rowed raised. You can say I don’t have any debt. Now who is in a better place?

I respect everyone’s hustle, you got to eat in this world. There is a way to live on minimum standards it’s all the want and need rule. I’m asian myself raised in a strict home,strict parents. All of both sides of my family have degrees. Doctors,nurses,lawyers,realtors,dentist,surgeons,engineers. Everyone would bash me for wanting to weld as a living. Graduated high school with a technical degree in welding. Straight out of high school began working at a warehouse at 15 hr heavyweight work and hard labor. My parents never supported me or agreed with my decisions they wanted me to get a degree. Managed to saves since high school working fast food. @19 I landed my first pipeline job making 48 hr working 7days 12 hours. Married young. Moved out young. During my first year of working in pipeline I managed to make 6figures my first year. Invested in my own bussiness. I’m 22 now married paid for my wife’s school she’s a neonatal nurse makes the same as me yearly. I’m a second year bussiness owner with 2 bussiness booming and double my investment coming in. Paid my first home in full worth half a million 500k with my wife. No kids. No bills.just utilities taxes no truck notes simple lifestyle. Travel. Work and build together with my now wife. Proved everyone wrong who told me welding wouldn’t get me nowhere. you don’t always need a degree it’s how bad and how hard you work and want it. Anything is possible it’s up to you what you do with your time and where your energy is put at. Good to see people doing good and smiling god bless you and your future.😁

I'm a CNA too and I tend to be looked down upon especially by my own co workers that are LPN's or RN's for doing the "dirtiest, lowest paying job" but seeing my residents clean, comfortable and cared for is the most rewarding thing I've ever done. My boyfriend makes 3x as much as I do per hour but due to him just HAVING to live in a big house, have a nice car and nice things, he's in debt and has to work 2 jobs. I live in a small apartment, old car with no car payments and I live close to everything as well. Thanks to that, I was able to save enough to go back to school, work just on the weekends while he can't go back even though he wants too because he has to work SO much in order to keep up with the fancy lifestyle that he just has to have.

I don't think it's overrated, knowledge is power and education is key. People who come from immigrant parents tend to think that way. Fortunately I live in Canada so having a degree does not mean hundreds of thousands in debts.

You are exactly right. I spent $100,000 on a private, all women's college education. My husband spent $12,000 to go to trade school. He's making 3x as much as I am. I could be doing my job without my degree. We're not sending our child to college unless she knows what she wants to do and it requires a degree. And even then, she's going to pay her way, Dave Ramsey style.

What Laura Likes Yeah, I majored in social work bcuz all my friends were going to college and I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I chose it out of desperation.
Now I have a TON of student loan debt and don’t even work in that field anymore bcuz it was low paying, dangerous, and stressful! I now make a ton more than I was making in SW and this job doesn’t even require a degree!
I will admit I got lucky and/or my prayers were answered bcuz a lot of decent paying jobs require some sort of training/degree. But if I didn’t have student loan debt, I think I would be able to survive in a lower paying job.

Josh I transcribe police reports at a local police station. It’s a govt. job. If I can hang in there for 7 more yrs. my student loans will be forgiven bcuz I work in the service industry.
I was scraping by working from home transcribing(low pay + unsteady work) while my ex paid the bills. But that experience landed me where I am today!

@@Kyraann. I shop at local farmers market's and ALDI. I am not vegan , but I do incorporate a lot of vegan and vegetarian meals and when I do my bill is $25-30 a week.
My weekly grocery budget is $40 at Aldi. I make jokes that no matter what I get there my total is always less than 40! Unless I get wine hehe

$10 boneless skinless chicken breast (this should get you a 4lb bag at stores like bargain grocery outlet, smart and final, food4less & vallarta)
$3 salad (99cts spinach, 99cts lettuce, 2 for $1 cucumber)
$2 salad dressing (normally 1.99 on sale. You can get these at almost any stores or the ones listed above)
$4 Black eye pea beans 2lbs (same stores like above)
$5 5lbs bag of parboiled rice( same stores)
$2 eggs (same stores, trader joes, costco)
$2 bread or frozen naan bread (same stores, costco, trader joes.)
$5 for almond milk 2 (2 32 oz for 5 bucks. They have that sale almost every week at those above stores. You can also get 3 half gallon packs at Costco for 10 bucks)
$2 tea park (for tea lovers like myself. You can make a tea cup everyday or try cold brew)
$5 honey (same stores)
$5 oil (for anything)
$5 tissue paper
Total $50

I lost a job I hated in corporate America at the beginning of this year and felt more ashamed because I didn't know how I was be 'defined' rather than being scared I didn't know my next step! I agree - having a strong amount of savings is definitely key and got me through to my new job! :)

Also having extra groceries in your pantry would make sure there's food to eat. Food pantries are good to visit if you need them.

In my state the min wage is $8.00, I think. I pd a mortg, truck payment, utilities, food etc on min wage. If money is managed properly, you can be very comfortable. Please don't listen to ppl from school. They owe more money for a house, 2 cars, kids and all their stuff. Don't listen to them. They don't pay your bills. As long as you are happy, content and hardly any debt, stay as you are. Credit card and shopping alot, is not good!!!!Any job that you love going to, is not really a job. Now or in the future. Yikes $8 is way too low. Minimum wage here is $15 and even that's not much. I couldn't survive on $15 not with the rent here in Ontario....on average rent is $1,200 - $1,700
@@MoniqueViola You probably won't like what I tell you. I have a $45.00 Straight Talk phone, no dryer, no cable. My treat for me is Wendy's, Pizza Hut or Dairy Queen. Fine dining. Lol. My house payment is very low. It's the taxes that I have to save for most of the yr. I'm retired after 43 yrs and there's not alot of money coming in. Best advice I can give you is cut your spending drastically. Track spending for a month. You will be surprised. Take coffee, juice or pop and lunch to work. Buy lunch things in 6pks and lunch meat. Cut going out with the ladies and eating out to just a few times. Unplug all things you don't use every day. Elec co charges for ghost power. Shut off lights unless necessary. Close all rooms off so as not to heat or a/c and shut off vents. Clean out car, it costs extra gas. Keep car full or half full. Keep car checked and go to a reputable mechanic that won't rip you off. Buying the car parts at auto store is also cheaper if it needs fixed. Always have extra food in your house with a manual can opener just in case. Like tuna, crackers, soup, canned hams, sardines, water etc. I hope that helps you. Most ppl won't live this way. If I was younger, money in the bank because I cut my spending, it would be precious. Don't even tell ANYBODY you have money saved as it grows. Your Mom may just talk and it comes out or with friends. Just talking or Jealousy from others once you start cutting costs to start saving. I'm long winded. Haha "CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK AND THINGS WILL CHANGE".

Thank you, from one waitress to another. It’s not a career, just a job. Not that there is anything wrong with it. I enjoy my regulars that come in. People see you working hard and you can walk out with more money in a day, than some in their careers. However, there are also low days. It’s smart to wait to go to school for something you love. I went to school and I ended up not enjoying the major I was in. Now, I’m in debt for something I don’t even love.

I am impressed with your positive attitude and your responsibility. But what you described isn’t “living on minimum wage” in a sense where minimum wage is actually all you have to live on. People against raising the minimum wage may see this and say, “See! ‘They’ just need to be more like this girl!” In reality, living with your mom rent free so you can save and support yourself isn’t living on minimum wage-it’s living on minimum wage + your mom’s income to offset your expenses. Many young people do not have the privilege of parents who can do that for them. So your savings you use to pay bills now are from that “safety net” which was enabled-not by a minimum wage income-but by your mother’s income. You also have your sister’s boyfriend who offered you free labor - this is a form of capital not everyone has access to that enables you to avoid spending money. Due to your mom using her income to help you save, you were able to afford a place with a convenient location that makes your cost of living cheaper. Someone who *only* has minimum wage to go off of and wasn’t able to use someone else’s resources to save money can’t do that. They wind up in inconvenient places where they have less control over their budget and expenses. Kudos to your mom for helping you! But in no sense is just a straight-up minimum wage affordable or fair. You deserve more. And shame on your job for not giving you a raise above minimum wage after 6 years of faithful service. Totally unfair.

LunaWave ; she has a loving family that work and support each other. They are encouraging her to take care of her self which I understand since I have 2 daughters who are handling business on their own. Minimum wage is different in every state and the cost of living in that state has a huge impact on how far that income will go. I live in The “Mitten state and the cost of living isn’t cheap here. Our minimum wage is 7.75(I think) and rent for a decent place to stay is at least $800 a month. They don’t match. No everyone isn’t privileged to have a great family with the means to help or live in a small town with reasonable cost of living. But she’s not say anyone can do what she is doing. She’s just talking about her experience.
Deborah Allen I agree with all you said. And I agree, she is not telling people to do what she is doing. But what I said was, she described her situation as “living on minimum wage.” After listening to her story, I gave feedback that I did not think she was describing what she said she was describing. You are not living on minimum wage when your income is off-set by someone else’s. The moral of my comment is - she deserves the life she has even if she was on actual minimum wage. I hope she gets it. I hope she keeps advocating for herself. I hope her job realizes they need to pay her a living wage, especially after being there for 6 years. She is worth more. We all are.

I agree. I live on minimum wage and I am a PhD teaching and doing research at a university in Italy. All I have is my salary of 1400 per month ,rent is 700 (one bedroom apartment in Pisa, city of the leaning tower), car is old and fortunately not expensive but still 45 a month goes for gas. Add the cost of electricity, water, heating, phone, and it goes to around 150/200, 150 for food... In the end I have worked 6 years to have 2k in the bank. How lovely. That's freaking minimum wage, not living with my mom for 2 years to save and move out. She is a great girl with a good message for us all, but living modestly with 14k in your account is not the same as living with minimum wage.
Wow, $50 a month for groceries 😯 I would love to see a vegan grocery haul!! I feel like I spend so much on groceries weekly/bi-weekly and I would love to learn ways to cut back in that aspect of my spending!

I think individuals can live off minimum wage in smaller states, in smaller towns, not in NYC or LA or bigger cities. I live in NY, Long Island specifically. Minimum wage here is the same, 11 an hour. I saved religiously and have over 22,000 saved over the last 3 years since i was pregnant with my son. HOWEVER, bro a one bedroom apartment is damn near 1800. And the areas these are in, are not the greatest. At the end of the month you only walk away with about 1700, BEFORE TAXES. It's not possible because even if you manage to find a 1600 apartment, there is absolute no money to live afterwards. It really depends on the city you're in. Because my cousin is living her best life in orlando on minimum wage with no worries & there its 8.25. smh

Cleveland Ohio is where it’s really at guys. The average minimum wage here is 10 an hour. I make 12.50. I have a two bedroom apartment for only 869 a month plus gas and electric , water is paid for. I split the rent with my boyfriend but if I had to get a one bedroom for only 600 which we do have here I could do it all alone too
Alicia Wilkins that’s why minimum wage should commensurate with average rents. Write and call and meet with your congressmen and each and every leader you can find and make an appointment with. But at least a letter to each. Do the math. And what min should be. It’s so true and it’s almost intentionally calculated it feels when it doesn’t match.

I’m even married and my husband and I moved into my parents basement and used a few thousand dollars to convert it into an apartment because we lived in a small studio for 2 years paying 1400 a month and never were able to save enough money for even a one bedroom damn near 2000 a month plus utilities most of which apartments were shitty. We now pay my parents 500 a month and are slowly able to pay off our debts and save money for our own home. I’ve even had to hold off on my dream to be a mother because I know we couldn’t give them the best they deserve. We don’t even make minimum wage either we make more than that and still struggle like crazy it is so rough. NY is insane and Long Island is the most expensive place to live in America. It is hard if you can make it here you can make it anywhere. Ps I’m from Huntington boarder of Nassau and Suffolk.

It’s a mistake to wait till you figure out what you want to do. Take anything and let that pay for what you want. I forced my sister to take something in school and to this day she thanks me because it gave her the means to pursue what she really wanted to do.

And perhaps if she's scheduled a dinner service (closing), she may be able to take food home that was left over, being the type of food service she works in. Best I got as a server was a free cup of soup and an entree at a 50% discount.
I was wondering the same thing! It seems like $50 a month isn't feasible. Here in Wisconsin I spend about $250 a month on food for just me but that can be a challenge sometimes.

I waited until 25 to go back to college and it was the best decision of my life. I waited so I wouldn’t invest thousands of dollars into a career that I didn’t want. Turns out I ended up getting free tuition due to many factors regarding my age, income and skills

Anyway, I love what you said about your job not defining you and what you said about school. I was in retail / child care for a while and my grandma would always tell me to get a real job or hound me about going to school. It’s not the same as it was where getting a degree guarantees you high pay. I see plenty of job postings requiring degrees but paying minimum wage. So how is that gonna help at all lol?
I wish we got tips but unfortunately we aren’t allowed to accept tips. I work with elderly people that have Alzheimer’s and sometimes they will hand you $100 only because they simply do not understand anymore :( it’s very sad. and when we do holidays the residents family try to give us money for serving them and their parents but we have to simply decline the money. It’s so true I see that to :/ my sisters both took classes to become managers at cvs and now with that manager title and countless hours of then learning they only make $2 more than me.

Waitressing includes tips so it’s not min wage. Free rent at your moms is not the same as having to start from scratch. 50 for food? Are you eating rice and beans daily? 100 for fall wardrobe? Not even Amazon is that cheap. Something missing from the information your sharing. Side hustle? I live in the cheapest apartment and my whole check goes to rent. I get money from my parents to compensate.
Same thing I was thinking. And I mean, she got to save up thousands of dollars because her parents let her live at home until she was 25, so technically she had a huge jump start to be able to live a little more comfortably than many people making minimum wage.

And she didn't say that she will buy an entire new wardrobe of clothes, probably she will integrate what she owns with something new, maybe shoes or a jacket. And in a shop that sells used clothes you can buy many things at great prices, it's a paradise for sweaters and jeans.

I'm assuming she's American and not Canadian here..... In America, restaurants can legally pay waitstaff way below minimum wage because they're expected to get tips, so in the end, it probably amounts to the actual minimum wage.

Some viewers are under the impression that she receives tips to supplement her income. I may be mistaken, but I thought she said she works at an Assisted Living Facility. Servers there do not receive tips from the residents. It's not like working in a restaurant. I know this because my Grandson was a server in an Assisted Living Facility when he was in college.
That's right, my cousin worked as a server for an assisted living community. Minimum wage here is $7.25/hour. She made $8/hour no tips.
I’m so glad I clicked on this video. It’s extremely relatable and I even work in the same environment. In high school I was a server at a retirement/nursing home. After I graduated I became a dietary aid and I’ve been there for 5 years now.

Not everything is linear and even becoming a doctor or a speech therapist, etc. is not permanent and you're not guaranteed a fulfilled life. What's for me is for me, as for everyone else. People especially strangers have to learn to mind their own!

Friends from school, relatives, even my hairdresser have given me the “what are you doing with your life” line. I’m working, I’m planning for the future, and I’m happy. Nothing wrong with that.
