The camera work in these videos is really amazing. How he anticipates what his father is doing and lines up the camera shots is really great. It's all very seamless, almost like you yourself were standing there and looking at what you wanted to see.
The fact that you hit that plate at 80(ish) yards, with that rail gun of a revolver, unsupported, standing, with iron sights, is a testament to your shooting ability. Excellent idea for a video as well, thank you.
Smith & Wesson revolvers are so classic. My father passed away & he was not a gun fanatic but worked security after he came home from WW2. Worked walking around the Montgomery Ward warehouse in Chicago for awhile before settling in his profession. An officer stopped by as he was doing his walkaround asked my father what he was carrying. " Nothing " was my fathers reply & the Officer told him he was crazy for not carrying. So he sold dad his backup gun a S & W , I Frame 32 caliber long revolver with a 3 inch barrel. Original box / warranty card / manual with a bore brush. Looking at the warranty card its from April 1955. It was hard to find those S & W 32 caliber longs but a gun shop in Florida had some 50 round boxes. Now I can't wait to try out that little I Frame 6 shot revolver. It looks like very few rounds were fired from it so its in great shape after all these years not even knowing my dad still had this gun from so many years back until going thru his personal estate items.
@TheAAA166 , It's a 686. I love this little 3" 686. We've not even done a video with it yet, but we will. Believe it or not, we're trying not to overdo it with revolvers all at one time, even if they are some of the sexiest guns on the planet.

Just picked up my first Smith this week, my first wheelgun for that matter. She's an L-Frame 586, a blued .357 beauty with big ol' 6 inch barrel. gonna take her shooting for the first time here in a couple hours when I get off work. Life is good.
How is it? Ive got a 4 inch on the way hopefully.... Its seems my shop might have sold me something they didn't have in stock with their dealer and have been getting the run around.
Thanks Hickock45. I've always wondered what "gun experts" were talking about when they mention the "j" or "L" frame, and always thought it was due to the shape of the frame itself. YOU ROCK. great to have you back on you tube !
Thanks for a really nice video! I love my j frame Airlite. It's been under my pillow every night, in my pocket every day for the last 17 years . Spent a lot of days in the swamps cutting cypress timber in chest deep water. Pull it out, shake the water and wet sawdust out of the barrel and fire away. It's been everywhere I've been, had minimal care I hate to say, and still performs perfect every time!
My first experience shooting a pistol was with my father-in-law and his single action Ruger Vaquero .44 magnum revolver. He was kind enough to leave it to me and my wife was kind enough to take it, lol. After watching you shoot your 686 Plus I decided it was the revolver I wanted. I settled on a 4" barrel. Thanks for the great videos.
They also at one time made an "M" frame for the .22 It was so small it was difficult to handle. One of the more famous M frames was the original "Ladysmith" .22 After introducing the .22 on the "J" frame (.32 frame) and calling it the .22/32 originally, the M frame was dropped. S&W makes such great revolvers! Love 'em. Thanks for the video!
I have and carried for @10yrs a 2in bbl S&W 686 L frame .357 mag. I love that gun. and my wife has used it twice to take her concealed permit test. They really do make the best revolvers.(in my opinion).
If i was a weapons manufacture i would go after the guidance of guys like this that know what they are talking about. Nothing i have seen him pick up that he cant shoot! Always amazed at how this man shoots. I hope to one day grow up to be like hickok45 :)
Thank you, I finally understand the revolver code for size of the frame. I had no idea what a J,frame was. Thanks for giving an old man something more to think about. I am new to handguns, now I need find the money to expand my collection.
I love this guy. I have most of the S&W handguns he uses. I’ve owned my Chief Special Mod 36 since 1976. I have a J, K, L Frame revolvers. I did own two N frames but stupidly sold my Stainless 4” 44 mag N Frame 4” for only $300 to a guy I owned a favor to. Boy I regret that. I carried 44 Special loaded in it. I’m glad I subscribe to this show!!!
Hey Hickok, I just wanted to thank you for this video. I recently purchased a Ruger SP101, (my first new revolver in 20+ years). So I am reintroducing myself to this class of handguns and this video turned my confusion into something that I can make sense of now. Thanks again !!!
I just picked up a used S&W 686 Plus Deluxe last week. I’ve been looking at the Ruger SP 101 for a long time, but I saw that S&W beauty in the case and asked what it was. It checked all the boxes for me: 7 shot, 3” barrel, external hammer, and wood grips. It looked as clean as the the brand new one they had. It also came with a like new brown leather Galco paddle holster. SOLD! I’m still looking at Rugers, but it’s going to be an LCR now.
Super, and may I add how much the "500" made me a believer. After I'd finished my data collection for the day I wandered along the firing line until at the last bench @ 100 yards I saw a scoped, 8"+ S&W but I knew it was larger than an "N". He was kind, letting me fire at his target where I clearly saw three holes; vertically approximately 2 1/2 spread. No horizontal variation. My shot landed atop his! The recoil impulse was much more tolerable than my handloads for my "44" Mag. SuperBlackhawk, and I was sold! S&W got everything right, I would be totally happy putting 100 rounds downrange in an hour, no problem, and no exaggeration. Gain-twist, rifleing, 8"+ barrel with porting, on an X frame, it all works plus the Leopold scope to make the 100 yard bench's now a place where any handgunner is welcome !
That was an outstanding video! Thanks! I’m a semi-automatic owner and all I’ve known in the military. I’m currently looking at a TRR8, so this was very helpful in understanding the various sizes. Thanks, again! 🇺🇸
firstly, thanks hickok, you never fail to explain in ways i understand, that being said, i watched this video a few days ago, i live in the uk but pretty sure i just heard the delayed sound of the 500 magnum hitting the gong... lol ;) seriously though what sound huh...
I have a steel J frame with a 2" barrel. It is absolutely a beast to shoot with full house 357 loads. I keep it loaded with Winchester 127gr +P+ 38 Special. With that load, recoil is manageable. It and the 110gr Hornady FTX 38 Special load are among the few I've found will reliably expand in my 4x denim and water jugs test media.
I used to own an Ivor Johnson single action "six shooter" years ago while stationed in Arizona and had so much fun with it out in the desert. Another gun I liked but scared the crap out of me was my Ruger Blackhawk 44...way too much fire power for me. Presently I have a Ruger LCP 380, second generation, and pack it when I go camping and/or backpacking. Now I would like to replace that Ivor Johnson with a similar weapon and the Smith & Wesson models, K and L, seem to be possibilities. Your channel offers so much knowledge and you, sir, inject the fun factor by actually firing every weapon you handle. I love and appreciate that as it gives me a good idea about the "feel" of each weapon, velocities, decibels and so on. It's helpful towards my selection of a handgun that would suit my needs. Thank you!

Very good shooting with that single action. Dad bought a 357 mag after WW 2. He couldn't afford the rounds so he ordered a 22 with a 6" barrel and with the K frame . No difference in weight or feel. He squirrel hunted with the 22 and he never missed. He only shot one box through the 357 but if he had to he wouldn't miss anything bigger than a squirrel. The K frame 22 is a six shooter. I think the 357 had a 4 or 5 inch barrel. He always cocked before he shot. Again I'm very impressed with your shooting. I didn't inherit his abilities and can't hit with any hand guns ,but got lucky at a range one day with an old 1911. 😎
I got a 6" 686 back in the 80s, if you only own one gun, it's a great choice, I got the 6" barrel because I planned on hunting with it, I never ended up hunting with it, now I wish it had a shorter barrel.
I have the good fortune to own a S&W 686-1 6 1/4" in .357. I really enjoy the fact that it can belch in .357, .38 and +p. Not exactly sure of the frame size. Thought it was a "K" but maybe an "N"? It fits my hand and outshoots me. Also sentimental attachment to it. I cut my teeth on a pre-74 Blackhawk when Dad let me shoot it. Two cylinders. .357/.38 and 9mm. It shot nice, too. I really enjoy the videos and your willingness to teach. I would really enjoy shooting with you some time.
This is an awesome video. Well thought out, intelligently delivered, and entertaining. I love learning while having fun. Hickok45, thumbs up to you sir. Respect.
The 38 Special N-frame was known as the 38-44 "Heavy Duty" or "Outdoorsman"(with the difference being that the HD has fixed sights and the Outdoorsman has target sights). These guns became the model 20 and model 23, respectively. The 38-44 designation refers to it being a 38 special gun on a 44 sized frame. These guns predated the 357 magnum cartridge by a couple of years, and were advertised for use with "high speed" 38-44 ammunition. This was loaded to much higher pressure than modern 38 special +P, and would give ~1200 fps with a 158gr bullet out of a 5" barrel. I've seen articles written by Elmer Keith and others containing load data that duplicates this sort of performance, but will avoid repeating it here.
I think the "J" frame is the ".38 Special" my dad had to carry as a flight engineer in the U.S. Air Force from the late 70's to the early 80's. If I'm right, my dad bought one back in the late 80's and owned it for about 30 years. He had the same ammunition that he had to carry as a flight engineer, hollow points with a rubber ring just below the hollow point.
Love my ‘37 I-frame S&W Terrier. Chambered in .38 s&w. Of course I carry the J-frame 640-1 in .357 magnum. No personal defense ammo for the Terrier, but it’s a wonderful shooter.
a good gun yes in deed not to knock hickok45 but I recommend a sub sonic round try this shoot 2 rounds of 357 then shoot 2 rounds of 45 colt pick up the one that feels best to shoot
S&W 65 3" was my seconded (Defense (DSS)) issued carry weapon (first was S&W 3906, it sucked). I loved my 65 so much I bought my own, bobbed the hammer and magnaported the barrel. When I retired I got to keep my 3906, which I gave to a friend who, for some reason, loves it., and my 65 which is now locked up for safe keeping, before it becomes my daughter's heirloom from Papa.
I have enjoyed your shows very much. they are informative and very clear. I don't own guns or use them at a range. ,and that's my choice I am fine with others owning and operating weapons. I am impressed by your obvious skills when using fire arms. Your modesty is appreciated. Thank Yo ufor your shows and sharing your knowledge.
I like when he moved to the .500 and only took two shots. That shows those new to guns how punishing the .500 is. Great video and great explanation of the Smith and Wesson frame sizes.
It's like Hickok heard us all when he said what to shoot the second round of the 500...GONG TIME! bread video sir! Been a wheel gun man since day 1 first handgun I ever had was a Smith&Willie 38spl k frame in blued steel FIRST LOVE
Glad you made this video. I've been trying to find holsters for my S&W model 10 and 66 and about all the companies that make holsters specify the frame size that it will fit and not the model
I am really amazed the way you shoot and how good you are. I know and believed you've been shooting long long time and I can say shooting is your weekly religion
Thank you Hickok45! Awesome presentation of Smith Wesson's revolver lineup! I have a SW 500 magnum revolver, and I love shooting it! The ammo is a little pricey but it's a fun shooter! Thanks again!
My dream is to shoot a revolver. Any good first revolver to shoot? I am not a big fan of the small barrels. But nothing as big as the X. I don't think I could take shooting it.
Hickock45 you are the best 2nd amendment rep we got thank you for your knowledgeable and entertaining videos their priceless thank you for all you do for us gun owners God Bless
If S&W can produce a J-frame that will take extended shooting with .357s, why can't they produce a K-frame that will take extended shooting? I like the L-frame okay, but I really prefer the size and weight of the K-frames. Can't modern materials and advanced heat treats be employed for a new and improved Model 65/66?
I'm not convinced that J Frames can take "extended" .357 shooting without some concerns (although my hand certainly would give out before the revolver did). How many times have we heard and read "practice with .38 Specials, carry .357 magnums?" Well -- and especially with J Frames -- I believe there are solid reasons for the forgoing advice.
Revolvers are the best most badass pistols over all in my opinion. A 22 revolver and a 357 revolver and that's all I need. Keep the 22 in your sock or pocket cuz it's so small for backup.
It is the same as the one in this video. fluted cylinder & all except i use the factory rubber grips for now. but i wish i had one with the smooth unfluted cylinder. id get the name i gave the gun engraved on it lol
Hickok 45, in 1974 I was 18 years old, so what you say. Anyway an older friend asked me to go with him to a sporting goods store for he was to buy a handgun. Fine, I went with him and he purchased a Smith and Wesson Model 19. Very nice handgun. I for some reason bought one the same time and it was a Smith and Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrolman in I believe in a 4 inch barrel. I shot it twice, two rounds is all I put through it. I was afraid of it, however I liked looking at it. Years later I did a stretching the Army and when I came back it was gone, stolen or whatever. That was a nice handgun.

Respect.
My girl just bought a S&W .38special+p Lady Smith. Im so proud. Keep up the great work! America!!!
12.00 minutes he shoots the gong with a 3 inch barrel, he takes another shot and it hits less than an inch from his first... the gong way down range
I carried a k frame 38 special for seven years. Never had to use it, but it shot very well at the range.
Smooth trigger.
I love the K frames 😍
Wow this was a decade ago. God bless you man Ive been watching you for years, love it.
I love this channel. God bless Hickok!
Love my ‘37 I-frame S&W Terrier. Chambered in .38 s&w. Of course I carry the J-frame 640-1 in .357 magnum. No personal defense ammo for the Terrier, but it’s a wonderful shooter.
Like revolvers specially those from S&W, great review.
This is the learning channel... This is what everyone needs
I want to buy my first gun and after saw a lot of them I choose the S&W 357 Magnum Plus
Good choice!
a good gun yes in deed not to knock hickok45 but I recommend a sub sonic round try this shoot 2 rounds of 357 then shoot 2 rounds of 45 colt pick up the one that feels best to shoot
hickok45 what model is that? 9:52
No glok is dod
Defece
S&W 65 3" was my seconded (Defense (DSS)) issued carry weapon (first was S&W 3906, it sucked). I loved my 65 so much I bought my own, bobbed the hammer and magnaported the barrel. When I retired I got to keep my 3906, which I gave to a friend who, for some reason, loves it., and my 65 which is now locked up for safe keeping, before it becomes my daughter's heirloom from Papa.
2011, damm feels like it was just uploaded. ♡
Very Informative video, Thanks!

I love watching these pre covid videos. Takes me back
All your intros are friggin hilarious.
Model 15 Combat masterpiece. K38. beautiful gun. Used it in the Air Force. Security Police issue. Loved it.
wheel guns rule......that simple
I like when he moved to the .500 and only took two shots. That shows those new to guns how punishing the .500 is. Great video and great explanation of the Smith and Wesson frame sizes.
your a beast! You always hit your target sure-shot
That's because he edits.
I used to hate everything about revolvers but the more I learn about different firearms the more I like them
12:54 “Ay there’s homeland security again flyin over” 🤣
Am here laughing with ya 🤣🤣
It's like Hickok heard us all when he said what to shoot the second round of the 500...GONG TIME! bread video sir! Been a wheel gun man since day 1 first handgun I ever had was a Smith&Willie 38spl k frame in blued steel FIRST LOVE
That L frame: "Did he fire six shots, or only five." "Doesn't matter, biotch, this thing holds seven!"
Glad you made this video. I've been trying to find holsters for my S&W model 10 and 66 and about all the companies that make holsters specify the frame size that it will fit and not the model
Those are all gorgeous.
I am really amazed the way you shoot and how good you are. I know and believed you've been shooting long long time and I can say shooting is your weekly religion
You kids that are still wet behind the ears listen to this man he knows what he is talking about!!!!
+AnotherBlondeBillman Any good mid-size .38 Special would be a good choice, or a mid-size .357 Magnum that would be more versatile.
hickok45 Thanks! You rock.
Smith and wesson, best choice, the rimfires or the 38's might be good
Maybe 357 2 inch barrel if you whant force
Sir MinderHeneryMorganKout Thanks!
+Sir MinderHeneryMorganKout shorter barrels don't mean more 'force' do they?
Hickock45 you are the best 2nd amendment rep we got thank you for your knowledgeable and entertaining videos their priceless thank you for all you do for us gun owners God Bless
Hey hichok45 how about doing a video on moon clips half moon clips speed loader and strip clips PS when it comes to shooting you the man
I love seeing the range full of green trees and what the woods looks like
If S&W can produce a J-frame that will take extended shooting with .357s, why can't they produce a K-frame that will take extended shooting? I like the L-frame okay, but I really prefer the size and weight of the K-frames. Can't modern materials and advanced heat treats be employed for a new and improved Model 65/66?
Most likely it's not requested and unpopular
I'm not convinced that J Frames can take "extended" .357 shooting without some concerns (although my hand certainly would give out before the revolver did). How many times have we heard and read "practice with .38 Specials, carry .357 magnums?" Well -- and especially with J Frames -- I believe there are solid reasons for the forgoing advice.
This is the best shooting guys real professional God bless you l always watch your channel peace and love for everyone watching this video
Thank you my man! I've always wanted to know this!
Have to love Hickok... doing a S&W video wearing a Glock cap and a Springfield shirt. He supports anything related to firearms.
*A man's got to know his limitations........*
Revolvers are the best most badass pistols over all in my opinion. A 22 revolver and a 357 revolver and that's all I need. Keep the 22 in your sock or pocket cuz it's so small for backup.
Even my ears were ringing when he shot the .500 magnum
Got out to the gong in a hurry lol
10 years strong and Hickok hasn't aged a day.
i have a 686 3 inch 7 shot thanks to this video.
+Dodge Mustang lol thanks brother. it was worth all the struggle to get it.
I bought one a couple of years ago.I love it,does yours have a smooth cylinder?
It is the same as the one in this video. fluted cylinder & all except i use the factory rubber grips for now. but i wish i had one with the smooth unfluted cylinder. id get the name i gave the gun engraved on it lol
Eddie DeSilva he rarely misses with that gun
I have a mdl 65. never thought much of it but now I have a newfound love for it because of you. thanks
Best Alphabet I Ever Heard!
