I got a base level 2021 Camry Hybrid. It is a great car. Very comfortable on short and long trips. I'm getting better than EPA mileage. (Average is 53.7, this tank it's indicated at over 58 MPG and last time I filled up, the computer was very accurate.)
So, we had purchased a 2020 regular Camry from them a few months before. Traded that one for what we owed on the car. Reduced our tax liability on the new car. We purchased it for $28,124 plus TTL. There was a $1,750 rebate at the time. Total out the door was a little over $27,000. The original dealership they were trying to get our car from backed out on the trade. So, we ended up getting slightly more accessories than the one we found.
There is good reason the Camry has been so popular. I have a straight 4 cylinder from the last generation and get over 40 on the highway routinely. I rented a 2020 straight 4, non-hybrids and averaged 52 on the highway. Incredible cars.
Kyle, you are correct. I purchased new, a 2020 Camry Hybrid and have averaged 52.7 MPG- U.S. total in driving over 22,000 miles since we bought it. I have driven on 3 separate road trips of more than 250 miles each, driving between 65 and 75 miles per hour and gotten over 60 MPG., the best was 63.1 MPG. Someone mentioned in a statement that Camry Hybrid Owner's take up to much time in the Left lane holding up traffic trying to get great gas mileage, some might, but that is total B.S. as the will get up over 100 MPH rather easily and cruise over 90 all day long.
@@josephhall1241 I usually just stick to 3 to 5 over. I drive a lot for work, and never gotten a ticket doing those speeds. We've done one trip so far, 500 odd miles, and averaged around 53 for it. We had a 2019 with 110k miles come through my work and it still looked / drove like new. This generation of Camry is great. The only thing I don’t like is how soft the front bumper is. They pick up rock chips really easily and look awful after 20-30k miles.
The paint on the new cars is so soft, I believe It has to do with environmental requirements but yes I agree I have a 20-year-old Honda that has less rock chips on the front then my 17 rav
I had a rental with 10k miles. It was shit. Both front seat belt mechanisms rattled. Constantly. That was embarrassing 30 years ago. It's unacceptable in any new car. I know rentals have a hard life. But those things have no business rattling ever.
@@jonathanrabbitt I drive a lot of new cars and they all have creaks and rattles. Some worse than others. Toyota is below average. And the new Camry is bad too. I don't know how old that taxi was but I assure you it did creak and rattle.
I remember the good old days when people bought cars for transport that were affordable, comfortable, reliable, and fuel efficient. Now every time I see a car review they complain about the infotainment system and screens not big enough and needing more backup camera angles. #ridiculous
The main problem is those reviews lead to carmakers cutting actual quality to get bigger screens and soft materials in at the same price point. A lot of interior quality you can't see, like where felt is used to prevent rattles or what material is used to deaden the sheet metal and influencers have forced automakers to basically stop development there entirely.
I want the big screen for CarPlay, surround view camera for parking, connected routing that routes me around traffic/accidents, and radar cruise control with steering assist for those long highway drives. I want a phone app that doesn't just start the car and lock the doors. I also want climate controls, defrost, heated steering wheel, and seat heating/ventilation controls. And that's why I chose Hyundai over Toyota last year. The Sonata SEL includes all of the above except the surround view camera for $25,800. You can't even get a push button start on a feature-stripped Camry unless you spend $1,500 more for the base hybrid or $4,200 more for the non-hybrid XLE trim. And unlike Toyota's 3yr/36k warranty, Hyundai includes a 10yr/100k drivetrain warranty. What you're looking for exists. It just isn't made by Toyota.
@@IRSmurf nice. Sounds like you made a good choice. I personally went with a Mazda 6 because the driving dynamics were that much better. The screen is smaller but it shows what I need to see. It was an easy trade off because how the car drives was higher on my list than infotainment.
I had one of these as a hire car for a couple of months and was expecting to hate it but it really surprised me. The Camry is so damn easy to live with, and everything just works. As a bonus i was able to hit 2.8L/100km on my work commute which is crazy.
1. I much prefer the integrated screen in the dashboard as opposed to the stick up version. So the dashboard of '18,'19 and '20 looked better to me as I expect to see a map and not much else. 2. When the front door swings open, you have to have long NBA arms to reach the handle to close. 3. The shape of the front doors at the bottom can stab you in your calf muscle if you are not careful. 4. It may not be quick but the base LE fuel economy is outstanding and the 8 speed transmission is a good match and AWD if you get snow four or more months of the year. It is as mainstream as the LTD or the BelAir of the 1970's, only much better in many ways.
Took a long time to say "It's a Camry, better than most, but just a Camry". As a previous owner of this generations Camry Hybrid I enjoyed it for being excellent at everything it had to be and nothing more. Would be great to get a Camry Prime with strong rear axel electric motors pushing 250hp+ and sub 5 second 0-60. That would be exciting for Toyota
I just sold my Kia Niro to my son. That was a great car. 50 mpg all day. Drove it 80k and not a single problem. The Camry hybrid is a great car for the money. Once you're in the 50 mpg club it's very hard to leave.
@@janoycresnova9156 you'll be surprised, I know a lot of people who are spoilt and as they're FIRST car, were getting modern mercedes'. They are the most loveliest people you'll ever meet wink wink.
Almost all of the Corolla Apex models were cvt. I would expect Toyota is happy to let VW and Honda fight over the American customer who wants a stick shift compact-ish family car.
The hybrid powertrain is a marvel of engineering also there are a ton of excellent safety features. The car is extremely good value for the money especially in Australia. They slug us with luxury car taxes here...
Perspective: You can get a midrange camry for the price of a 1.5t spec civic. Just food for thought. Would you rather have a 1.5t CVT or a 2.5L 8 Speed. Also - Toyota CVT's don't use belts. Just another fact.
I drive a 2021 Corolla LE CVT. The launch is dangerously bad if you gotta merge into traffic from a stop. But once you're moving I have no complaints. It's a very smooth ride, and very fuel efficient. And the giddy up is more than fine for a 1.8L. Toyota's CVTs also aren't really known for having problems like other manufacturers'. Overall, I'm really happy with how the transmission performs. Coming from someone whose passed 2 cars were manual. Definitely half as fun to drive as those though haha.
Only the LE hybrid comes with the lithium ion, the rest of the hybrid trims come with nickel metal hydride. I used to build this generation when I worked at the plant in Kentucky.
@Chirag Mehta Lithion ion ususally perform better and are more environmentally better, but nickel metal hydride are easier to manufacture and toyota says it performs better in different weather conditions

This and the Ford Maverick are the first hybrids I'd actually plunk my hard earned cash for. Feel like they've really sorted out hybrids making them not only not miserable to drive but much better battery technology. Not much more money upfront and really great economy in the real world.
I’ve said it before and say it again: hybrids save you so much money in the long haul. Most people don’t really think about the long term costs that regular ICE cars require. If you look at the operating hour cost (like aviation does), internal combustion engines are SUPER expensive. For example, 100k miles at 20 mpg at current gas prices (100000/20) = 5000 gallons of fuel at $4.5 per gallon-> $22,500.00 just on gas over 100k miles (maybe 10 years). That’s almost the price of the car. At the same gas price, a hybrid getting 48 mpg would cost you $9,375.00. Companies need to figure out how to make hybrids a little more fun to drive. And that CVT/eCVT sound is not appealing to most car enthusiasts like me. I would buy this car though.
your calculation is almost correct but you didn't mention the fact that hybrid cars will cost you around 5k more than a non-hybrid one in the first place and you have to change the battery almost every 8 years Which it won't be cheap,so even on a long term use there isn't a significant difference between the two
@Gottes God "Have to be mindful of raining season"? What are you even talking about. I've forded a Prius through a foot and a half of water by making sure the ICE didn't kick on, and I regularly drive my Fusion Hybrid in torrential rain and deep snow. There are also far more reliability issues that come with regular ICE cars. The only potential long-term concern would be the HV battery, but even then they're no more likely to fail than an automatic transmission. By the time it might fail; the amount of money you've saved in gas, oil, brakes, belts, etc far exceeds the cost of replacing the HV battery. The rain thing really has me with a loss for words. That's the first time I've ever heard someone say that, and I have no clue what you mean. Do you think they'll electrocute you if you drive it in rain?
@ttabibi1829 To be fair, the hybrid batteries tend to last longer at between 10-15 years with 12-15 years being more common. There's also a medical courier that has 440,000 miles on his 2020 Rav4 Hybrid and he's still going strong.
@@ttabibi1829In Canada, hybrid models costs $2200 more than ICE equivalent trims. Hybrid battery warranty is 12 years. In the last Toyota AGM, they made a point on lowering battery replacement costs. Note this is strictly for the battery and not labor charges tacked on by the dealer.

Other than routine maintenance, the only thing that it has needed was a fix for leaking inverter coolant. These things may not be exciting, but they are almost indestructible. I can (and will) purchase another Toyota hybrid in a heart beat.

Have battery concerns Toyotas ever really played out at any significant scale? They seem to run forever without needing replacement. My mom put 250k miles on her Prius and the car still easily got 45 mpg when she sold it simply because she was bored with it. It still ran great
I don’t understand this comment section. Why are you giving such words to this car? This car is giving everything at its best without any problems from going to A to B position. If you would buy a German vehicles like BMW,Audi or Mercedes you would like it but you know it well show its true colours after some years and those parts costs a lot but no Toyota is giving same kind of level power in the same segment in low price with great reliability but you don’t want it. It’s easy to work for mechanics and easily parts change compare to German cars. Check any original car reviews who would tell about engine review of car he will tell you how much complex and money grab design these German cars are and how much Toyota is easy to work on. Seeing outdoor beauty and massager seats 💺 will cost in bad way. Well the main problem is you the audience! In the years of 1920 they were cars made which could never die but company are losing because customers are not coming for servicing and sells dropping badly and they start making cars which gives maintenance and could affect in 6 months or year. There was that time and now we are here in today’s world where you don’t appreciate how much great car they made at such good price with great design and engineering but no you want more plastic in cars more trapped heat in engine with ambient lighting with so many useless features. You guys want to change cars like iPhone every year (slowing the old phones and making them buy new one)? Producing so much useless plastic for these vehicles and small parts which cost a lot but no you gonna be in other videos like.... oh! That exhaust sound amazing. Calling the vehicle is boring is such stupid words. What if a company like Toyota never exist? Those reliable engine never exist only big German cars people everywhere and filling there pockets just like today’s phone market is but no you audience is fool or something idk to easily get glance by those useless features in bmw gt or in Range Rover. Appreciate the effort and don’t spread these weird words.
And you think this is a problem of cars? You don't think in general capitalist markets simply drive up demand for "worthless" things? What do you think people do with everything from TVs to phones to toys? To criticize German cars like that show you have no appreciation of what German engineer has done to advance car technology. Many of the "core" features you would consider today came from German (or even luxury brands from Japan/Korea). The "useless" features you mention like ambient light are also found in Japanese cars. People like you take things too seriously and ride on your high horse all day long enough seeing the hypocrisy of your own. Every brand that has survived has its spot in the market, even brands like GM/Ford which a lot of people dislike.
@@dailyrant4068 I knew someone like you would mention ambient lighting but thinking there are pretty minded people but I guess not. I like German cars myself I do a own a Škoda octavia from 2010 to 2016 bmw 5 series but its engineering are change like they not are what they used to be. I definitely appreciate what the German engineer has done and what high vehicles they have build. The first features you are mentioning about like ambient lighting it’s just a fraction of what starts from German cars and now found in most of cars just like iPhones design and how it impact the market and talking about impact you already know what’s Volkswagen has done by there “emission scam” which they still paying now and can’t reset the environment pollution. And listen you just took this to another topic I just mention about Toyota engineering which you didn’t see I guess. Mostly people in comment are just something else and not knowing the value of this car just because it’s practical and pretty reliable. They don’t die and start every single time whenever emergency you were in not like others. People and there expectations are just keep growing like there is not this in this car or good looking infotainment system is there like seriously? It’s Camry. Yes every brand has worked there _ _ _ off to be in that position without seeing the ethics and how it’s gonna impact and many fail. Do you know someone made self driving vehicle in South Korea or Japan in 1993 or something but he can’t make or produce more due to pressure from big companies and how he gonna change the market but sadly fail don’t know where he is now.
German car design peaked out 20 years ago. They've done nothing significantly worthwhile in the mass market in the last couple of decades. BMW and Mercedes and the VW group have completely lost their way. This is probably why my old cars are German but my new cars aren't
@@harryspeakup8452 clearly your opinion isn’t widely accepted as all the German brands have sold cars more than ever. I don’t even know what perspective you have since you haven’t explained a damn thing about what Germans have not brought. It’s ok to criticize them but have some substance not just blind hatred. I see things exactly as how they are, at the end of the day every single car brand is a business which means they have to make a profit. This is why all brands are dropping manual transmissions (since too few buy), start building suvs (looking at mambo and even Ferrari). These are simple realities, based on what real world buyers want.
One interesting fact is the Camry hybrid makes its torque at 5,200 rpm whereas the Avalon and ES Hybrid makes it at 3,500 rpm. Also the engine cover for the ES hybrid is vastly different and larger than the Camry hybrid version(same a25afxs powertrain of course) having extremely thick and dense foam underneath. Still finding out more differences as I poke around. another fun fact is the accord compares nearly identically dimensions wise including interior, to the avalon and ES. and not the camry. camry is sort of an odd ball in the segment. i’ll bet the new civic is as big as the camry inside and out. i’ll have to look it up

@@stefanossmitty3318 you made the right choice since Mazda is not only reliable at par with Toyota but also fun to drive unlike boring Toyotas.

Over 50 mpg on the highway in a car this size? Hybrids are boring, but damn, that makes me interested in this car anyway.

Best friend has had two Toyota Hybrids with ZERO battery pack issues. His latest is the Avalon, 2013 and it has over 220k miles. Again, no issues.
Perspective: You can get a midrange camry for the price of a 1.5t spec civic.
Just food for thought.
Would you rather have a 1.5t CVT or a 2.5L 8 Speed.
Also - Toyota CVT's don't use belts. Just another fact.
Toyota does make a conventional belt CVT with a launch gear, without hybridization.
The e-CVT is the model to buy though.
What’s the price?
I drive a 2021 Corolla LE CVT. The launch is dangerously bad if you gotta merge into traffic from a stop. But once you're moving I have no complaints. It's a very smooth ride, and very fuel efficient. And the giddy up is more than fine for a 1.8L. Toyota's CVTs also aren't really known for having problems like other manufacturers'. Overall, I'm really happy with how the transmission performs. Coming from someone whose passed 2 cars were manual. Definitely half as fun to drive as those though haha.
@@sgtpepper6379 yeah that’s because the LE uses the old CVT and not the one with the launch gear. You should have bought an SE/XSE or the Hybrid.
Hence why it’s called Ecvt, planatery gears
Only the LE hybrid comes with the lithium ion, the rest of the hybrid trims come with nickel metal hydride. I used to build this generation when I worked at the plant in Kentucky.
@Chirag Mehta Lithion ion ususally perform better and are more environmentally better, but nickel metal hydride are easier to manufacture and toyota says it performs better in different weather conditions

I love the opening music on this review. As always, you outdo yourself!
I bought the awd Camry. Absolutely love it and the self driving!!!
George you nailed it
your calculation is almost correct but you didn't mention the fact that hybrid cars will cost you around 5k more than a non-hybrid one in the first place and you have to change the battery almost every 8 years Which it won't be cheap,so even on a long term use there isn't a significant difference between the two
@Gottes God "Have to be mindful of raining season"?

Another vid, heck yah, you just made my morning!
Still finding out more differences as I poke around.
another fun fact is the accord compares nearly identically dimensions wise including interior, to the avalon and ES. and not the camry. camry is sort of an odd ball in the segment. i’ll bet the new civic is as big as the camry inside and out. i’ll have to look it up
new Civic is still way smaller, at least dimension- wise
