I always take my guards off. That cutter on them will literally eat your string up everytime you tap it onto the ground. Also, a friendly tip. If you want to keep a lot of string from coming out just stretch your spring some. 💯

Excellent video! First-timer here. Had to stop and restart the video several times, but I eventually made it - and it works! Your speed was slow enough for me to follow and your camera detail was perfect for me since I was unfamiliar with the parts involved, but I made it - thanks to you!
Thanks for the info. I was going to order a new adapter to install the Speedfeed on my Stihl, didn't even think about steeling the existing mounting nut. Thank you!
I use the speedfeed 450 head on my stihl 130 kombi. I prefer the 450 because it's an extra capacity head and I run .105 line so it holds the thicker line better. Also when reloading string in any speedfeed head you want to hold the cap and twist the base that's closest to the trimmer head and has the ridges on it to retract the line. This will prevent the line from twisting around your hand.
Big Texas true that! Video is a few years old and just started using the SpeedFeed heads at the time. Thanks for dropping some knowledge here in the comments 🔥👍🏻

Good to know, I always use the stihl auto cut head, I cut a notch in the spool so I can just load it with one length of string. I tried a speed feed years ago but didn’t seem to like it. I find the auto cuts are the easiest of heads to teach employees how to load, (speed feed is probably easier) maybe I’ll try a speed feed this spring. Need to stay open minded.
You don’t have to twist the bottom if you hold the bottom still and twist the top it will keep your string from wrapping around the shaft as your restringing
I have the same kombi system and weed eater that you have here in this video? Does it matter which model of Echo Speed Feed I use? Amazon has a 400 and a 450.
Randol Property Management & Improvement LLC it's Oregon magnum gator line .105 diameter. I asked the owner of my local Stihl shop for the biggest roughest toughest line to go in my Echo trimming head and boy howdy this is it. Saying it doubled my productivity is NO exaggeration.
The stihl nut need to be trimmed down about 100 thou . If you do a fitment test with regular nut vs stihl nut you will notice about 80 thou difference. I would be worried about it not fully engaging on the dogs. But then again may never be a problem. I shaved mine down and wrapped it in teflon because it seemed a bit loose.
Good video. Great information here. I've always thought about buying one of these after watching this video I think I'll get these for my machines. very nice stihl there too. cheers calvin
Very happy with the easy load feature of the Speed Feed, but after using it on my Stihl FS55R for the last 2 cuts I ran into my old nemesis - line welding. Had to pull it apart tho unstick the melted line once again. Hoped that the SF would help eliminate welding since it takes the operator out of the equation as far as improper winding is concerned. Have you been able to solve this problem? And if so, what line do you use that resists welding? Thanks.
jj parody thanks a bunch for the comment! Funny that you should bring this up. We used the Speed Feed all last season and into the beginning of this one and just now is this becoming an issue. It is because the fins on the disk inside the head are wearing out especially where the string passes through. It cause the string to wind incorrectly some how. Probably should do a video on it and see what the general opinion is. We use Stihl round commercial .095 thanks again for watching and the comment. 👍🏻
Couple of questions. Is it the 400 or 450? Which do you recommend? How hard is it to pull new line back out when both break off inside? That is more time consuming to me than re-winding a head every once in awhile. I can go 3 or 4 hrs before I run out of line. and usually just rewind 1/2 of the head (unless very thick weeds). I'm ready for a break by then anyway. Thx.
We use the 450 on all our trimmers and in all honesty we have never had the string break off in the head. We use Stihl .095 string. Thank you very much for watching and commenting.
The first thing we do is remove guards on trimmers. I don't recommend it if like to wear shorts, that would be bad but,as far as efficiency ,it's the way to go in our opinion.
Rich Carlton if you install a speed-feed head on your trimmer and the string gets to long, then just wind the head back inn to desired length. If your talking about initially when you load the head then just cut the string with something like pliers. I like my string to have about a (12"-14" )diameter cut.
You know, I have never noticed a difference in guard on or guard off in the amount of crap the trimmer slings on me. I get covered either way. If you like longer line, take it off.
I bought the same kit you used in your video - but the kit did not contain a spacer. Will it operate ok without the spacer - and if not - any idea where I can pick up just the spacer? Thanks for listening and thanks for helping
Jeff Faircloth you should need the spacer. Interesting one wasn’t in the package. I would check back where you purchased and see if it was a fluke that it was not in the package.

The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
I've tried doing this installation but the nut taken from the FS KM and installed into the Speed Feed seems very loose (5:15 mark in the video). Is this normal? It doesnt seem to fit all the the way into the nut area
Thanks for the info. For the SpeedFeed-400 I bought, the spool (line holder) has "R" on one side and "L" on the other. There is a lip either way it is installed. Which way is right for the KM131?
@@rpmimprovementoutdoorservi9968 Thanks, I worked it out. The spool has to be installed with "L" up (visible). This enables sufficient compression when bumped to feed out line. The other way up, the spool does not release new line.

And 20 minutes later I went to my local Home Depot and purchased a “ECHO Speed-Feed 400 Universal Trimmer Head” for $29. This kit had a spacer and many other sizes adapters to place on my Stihl FS 56 RC Trimmer.

never liked those plastic spacer...too tall...go to tractor supply and buy a 1 inch inside diameter by 14 ga thickness precision washer and use it ibstead of the plastic spacer...lower profile and works much better. a 6 pack of washers is 4 bucks...
*Good trimmer,🌱 **allabout.wiki/Echo** I string my own line onto spool to save money and this trimmer seems to use less line than my former trimmer...does the job except for super thick St. Augustine runners on curb. Would love a shoulder strap so that I would have to use less arm strength to hold upright with my disability.*

lewis hawks Have never owned a piece of equipment 😊 found out about about the Speed Feed after the fact and purchasing that was quite a bit less expensive than buying new trimmers. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment.
Why not just use a autocut c5-2?
I considered that with my FS 131R, but the design by Echo really is a better implementation of the idea.
FORD MOTOR IN A CHEVY TRUCK HAHA
Why doesn't Stlil make a head like this?
Edwin Walker still does make one its called AutoCut Easyspool. It uses two separate pieces of string instead of one long piece.
Stihl not still lol
What's the difference between speed feed and auto cut. I have the 131 kombo
Thanks. Good to know. Which is better?
Edwin Walker I cant make a comparison never used the AutoCut
never liked those plastic spacer...too tall...go to tractor supply and buy a 1 inch inside diameter by 14 ga thickness precision washer and use it ibstead of the plastic spacer...lower profile and works much better. a 6 pack of washers is 4 bucks...
Sarawakan always say ilah lah or ilah chick may be is too big ...n too many
The speed feed sucks! Do not waste your money.
Mojo Risin why?
