It's not just the art style it's the whole tone of the trailer. This is supposed to be a pretty messed up world to live in. Tons of political backstabbing, multiple world ending events going on simultaneously, tons of personal trauma that everyone has endured, whole factions sacrificing themselves (wardens) just to hold the end back for just one more day. i have an easier way, just go to your Dragon Age Keep. you can sacrifice the warden, people say you can't because of DA2, but no it's only when you try to import your save from Origins to Dragon Age 2. but in Inquisition your warden can either be dead or alive.
So, in a world where women are kidnapped, raped, and mutilated by darkspawn to reproduce, slavery is rampant, and there is endless death by demons and insurgent groups, we have....a colorful and upbeat journey with smiling and humorous characters?! BioWare has ZERO IDEA what its audience wants.

It came out before they sold out to EA and talent began to leave and EA began to run things. The current DragonAge is a terrible husk of what could have been and they make it worse with every new iteration.

yeah that's a good way to put it. a different art style isn't inherently bad, it's just that it's not what anyone was expecting for this game and I think the consensus is we don't like it, myself included. These games are supposed to be darker games with darker themes, the artstyle feels downright silly. I wasn't even the hugest fan of the DAI style tbh but it felt like a natural progression from DA2. idk I am sad.
I've seen this happen a bunch of times in game development. They start out going for a detailed, realistic look but then run out of time & cash so suddenly make a decision to go "cartoony" because it's cheaper, easier and quicker. This is not a good sign.
I've waited 10 years on a cliffhanger for a chance to confront Solas. If we're getting fortnite art and no conclusion to that story, then I am content to watch Bioware lock the doors.
Apparently, Mark Darah has already said that this is an In-engine trailer and not what the game actually looked like. Also, the gameplay leak from over a year ago looks like inquisition rather than a cartoon like the trailer.
The trailer did say in-engine. In-engine and in-game are two different things. The leak from over a year ago looked a lot more of what you would expect from a dragon age game. I personally think Bioware screwed up and gave some people a reason to have a negative opinion of the game. Hopefully, the gameplay reveal will fix that on Tuesday.

I honestly thought it was like a mobile spinoff...I had still thought that it was called Dreadwolf so when I saw the title, I was like oh I guess that's neat Varric is getting a spinoff. Then the realization kicked in 😂

The part that truly disappointed me is “the Veil jumper” looked so out of place and gave Peebee vibes from Andromeda. Though Davrin looks like to be the best companion a Grey Warden and plus he’s got a Griffin.
Those are exactly my thoughts of both characters. The Grey Warden character looks cool, and the Veil Jumper...well, when I saw her I simply said, the first disposable character in my party (IF I decide to buy the game).

Re-watching the trailers for the others games, there is an immediate difference not even just the art style, just everything about it. The first three trailers for the first three games made it obvious something was at stake; there was something to fight and something bad happening. It didn't spoil anything you couldn't figure out by playing the game and it hinted at enough to keep you interested. This doesn't keep me interested at all. It looks genuinely like a Fortnite expansion pack or a DLC pack to pay for rather than an entire game. I want to see if the gameplay looks different when they showcase it, just in hopes of giving it something to be redeemed about, but I've lost much hope for this game in the several years spent waiting on it to the point I forgot it existed.

Just make DA:O again why is it so hard? They limited number of companions, they limited your party size, they limited the control you have over your party, they limited dark themes, they limited everything that made DA, DA to a point like you said it's basically Mass Effect Fantasy

I don't mind the art style but I hate the way presents the companions. It feels more like an Overwatch trailer than dragon age. I have a feeling the game is going to be like mass effect andromeda where every companion is a lolsorandom quirk chungus.

I'm holding out final opinions until the 15min demo, because it's common to outsource trailers/ads to other companies, and some movies/shows have been infamously misrepresented in the past through poor advertising. The style is likely final, but I'm holding out my opinion on the tone til we actually see the gameplay in a couple days.

It's so weird. I was in their Discord, because I got notified by someone announcing the trailer. And I found myself surrounded by hyped fans. I usually don't get surprised by these kinds of news, like the new Assassin's Creed. If I just stumbled on the trailer randomly, I would've expect it to be bad and understand that many are in the same mind. But spending time in the Discord somehow got me sucked into an echochamber. I became surprised that it got disliked that much.

To me, it's not only the trailer that doesn't inspire confidence, but everything surrounding the game, including it being remade multiple times and the mass layoffs from Bioware recently. There's a lot to be skeptic about this game, and yet as a fan there's a part of me that hopes I'm wrong.

In past time, we had something call "templars". They were drugged monk formed to wield weapons and turned into guardsmen of the Church, capable of inhibiting magic in a supernatural way in the cost of their own freedom, getting more and more dependent and more and more mentally affected by the substance they needed to take in order to achieve such powers. They were knights, had an oath, but even them weren't perfect : a lot of them could be corrupted by dark desire, being possessed or mind controlled by demons. Some were more inclined towards extremism, thinking of mages like monster, and ending following the path of death for what they think was "good" for the whole. Now, throw templar in a trash can, you have "mage killer".
I don't remember exactly but if the story is set in Tevinter, then they have a different religious structure there. They have the Dark Divine and they accept magic practice, they are mageocracy. That's why they don't have templars.
the Templar & mages conflict were some of my favorite aspects of DA2 and into DAI and now they are tossing centuries worth of conflict, war, torture and imprisonment out the window so we can have a silly quirky mage killer??? The goofy upbeat tone of this trailer is genuinely baffling. We are hunting a god who wants to melt all life on earth for his own hubris and the trailer wants me to be in a silly goofy mood. The trailer was most likely meant to show us why the name of the game was changed. As well us showing the fans that they are changing the focus of the game from Solas to the group of companions.
It's less about bg3 combat being good or bad, more about that fact that bg3 won GOTY with turn based combat, something so vile in nature to modern gamers(ff7 remake ditched in favor of real time action) proving that combat does NOT sell a game on its own

I personally think the GTAVI situation is precarious at best. The writer of every other GTA game is gone now. I went in with low expectations and was still disappointed. LIKE HOW is it possible. The choice of music, the way the trailer is made and everyone is introduced like we're in a marvel game/movie made no sense whatsoever. The artstyle doesn't jive with Dragon Age "dark fantasy" whatsoever. Also..where the hell is Solas? I may get hate for this, but these companions look very checklist`y and Bioware seem to have watched too much Rings of Power. I'm holding out for the gameplay, but I fear that it won't be enough to save it. The writing is up in the air right now and this will probably be the last Bioware game I play. I'm also interested in the story, because I love the Dragon Age lore, but them catering to "modern audiences" is not something I hoped Dragon Age would turn into.
Not only Solas, if this game takes place in Tevinter why the hell isn’t Dorian a Companion? I get they probably wanted new characters to tell, but they could have at least had one returning character that isn’t named Veric be a companion.

All great points but I'd like to add that I was especially disappointed by the lack of any original score to accompany the trailer. The score from Origins is one of the best from gaming's history in my opinion and perfectly embodies the (former) dark beauty of the setting. Even up until Inquisition the main theme still impresses and invokes grand fantasy. I suppose Tuesday will inform us more on this topic but this was just an area that I felt was underdiscussed. Great video as always, looking forward to your thoughts after Tuesday's reveal.

I finished Dragon Age: Origins several times, and everything that followed was only a slow disappointment from Dragon Age 2: Retcon, change of tone, and an RPG which is no longer one. DA: The Veilguard is probably the only Dragon Age that I will not buy if the gameplay of June 11 is trying to look like an Overwatch DLC and a vaguely distant RPG coating. To be honest, I think Bioware has been in artificial coma for at least 10 years. What we see here is more like bad fanfiction of activists and is very far from what DA : Origins offered

Looks like a mix of Borderlands 3, Fortnite and Overwatch. Anyone who says “just wait for the gameplay reveal, guys” is coping hard. I also have a feeling they're going to be side stepping the whole dread wolf stuff as much as possible. Guess I’ll just replay Origins and pretend the series ended there.
My thoughts are that it looks awful. It feels like we can ready the gravestone for Bioware because this should kill it. The combat may be good and that's nice. But I can play games I already own for combat. If the story, characters, and visual style of the game all seem to be going into the garbage bin it's a hard pass. We'll see what the gameplay looks like. But they pretty much shot themselves in the foot with this and gave a terrible first impression.
The art is less of an issue for me than the overall tone/vibe of the trailer, which looks more like it's for an arena shooter like Fortnite or Overwatch than for a Dragon Age game. It raises a legitimate concern of EA insisting that its worst instincts be indulged.
I mean, sure, it might be a cinematic trailer, but trailers are always meant to do one thing: draw in the audience and market it. What we see in trailers is supposed to be an idea of what to expect when it comes to thw game itself. Maybe the trailer was jacked up and done completely wrong, but if so, if that's not the vibe they want to present, why did no one catch it in time to fix it?
The trailer looks like they prioritized "checking all the boxes" to try and please a broader audience while forgetting about everybody who have been waiting to see the rest of Solas' story...
I think this would have been about 30% less weird if they had chosen different backing music. To your point about it being dark fantasy - the trailer shouldn't be in a major key. Major inherently sounds happy and upbeat and is totally out of place in the franchise. It's a *bizarre* choice.
I really didn't like Solas much. I was looking forward to punching him. Now I've changed my mind. I'd rather travel with Solas. Instead of the pudding gang. I mean seriously Emmrich " The Necromancer" ; is ridiculous.
I think the name change is significant as well. The original name "Dreadwolf" the name of this Dark God figure really spoke to the Dark Fantasy aspect of the game, and actually sounded quite interesting to me. Even the new name "Veilguard" sounds very cartoonish and less exciting, reminding me of more modern things like Marvel/Overwatch/etc. I never fully played Inquisition because it felt like such a major departure from Origins, and every time I try it I hate it perhaps I'll try again before this comes out.
The cartoonish artstyle, the logo colors being completely off to the visuals shown, specially when compared to the Veil which is still green as shown on the trailer, and the dialogue with the Disney/Suicide Squad quality sounds completly off to a game in which the world is living at its edge. Nothing really fits. This looks and sounds awful. And let me predict the following: Varric will die the most generic heroic death possible. He sounds like a character that will die half way through the story, and completly stupid to add a cherry on top of this mess.
I mean, c'mon, what did we expect? (At this point, I hope the Solas wins, which it brings on the end of the world, Bioware gets shutdown and the whole franchise get rebooted)
I agree with you so much! I am a devoted Dragon Age player, and seeing these trailers has nearly moved me into "don't buy" mode. I really dislike the look, and if the game continues in this arpg style of combat, I'm out. Makes me sad.
My expectations were low, hearing about the troubled development and how many of the staff and writers left, but to turn DA into this I really didn't expect. I'd made my peace awhile ago I wasn't likely to play anymore Dragon Age, I didn't hate Inquisition but the signs were obvious in gaming/Bioware writing was going to get worse for the coming decade or so.
The reason the art style ruins it is not because the art style itself, but they chose to market the game with this look and feel of silliness. Telltale games were cartoony. But they didn't get shown Asa goofy pg rated super hero film...they still came off as open and emotional story driven games, just with cartoony visuals. This is cartoony and comes off like a cgi commercial for monster engery
After watching that trailer I thought about you, my man. I always recalled you bringing up Dragon Age and Bioware in general with regard to gaming topics. Personally, I was astonished by the tonal dissonance of the trailer, specially considering the ending of Trespasser and the Dreadwolf teasers. This used to be a dark fantasy setting and has slowly transformed into a high fantasy one and this trailer just confirms that direction is intentional.
I think the Grey Warden reveal sums up what’s wrong with this trailer nicely, clean. Someone fighting dark spawn should not look so clean. That warden should be covered in bile, blood, and the Blight. Instead he and his griffon (while cute looks like it’s part raccoon or potentially possum, tho it’s young so I guess it’s fine) look like they’re ready for a L’Oréal advert. Same with the Qunari fighting the dragon, she should be covered in dirt and grime after an all the dust that dragon is kicking up. Instead she looks like she hopped out of the spa. I don’t even think inquisition looked so clinically clean when it came out, tho I’ve yet to go back and check. I actually went back and watched the og origins trailer and you can watch as our intrepid party of hobos and underdogs, and hobo underdogs, get progressively dirtier and bloodier as the fight goes on. The graphics for this trailer are great, beautiful, def not the style of dragon age and that’s fine, but I definitely understand the dissatisfaction in it looking too disneyfied or like Overwatch, Arcane, or Dishonored in some ways.
What I'm worried about is they chickened out. With Dreadwolf, the idea has been to redeem or kill stolas and I was really hoping for a 3rd option of Stolas wins, he gets what he wants, and the dalish are finally protected. What idea do you get from the title of Veilgaurd? To me it communicates a complete 180 on the point of the game. To completely drop the original concept to instead focus on saving the veil. I'm really worried about the sudden potential shift in the game's direction and that it will under deliver because they plan to ship this out before the end of THIS YEAR! IN LESS THEN 6 MONTHS! I SHOULD BE HYPED AS HELL, I SHOULD BE BLASTING MY FRIEND'S PHONE WITH EXCITMENT. And instead all I'm feeling is discomfort, concern, and a little panic that this will be dragon age's mass effect andromeda.
I don't mind the art style personally. I mean its not like the previous installments had groundbreaking or realistic graphics for their time. Its the tone of the trailer that has me worried. Gives off more road-trip vibes rather than end of the world type atmosphere.

The modern audience is a myth, basically means “Twitter audience”, and catering to them is just incredibly counterproductive and doesn’t make any money at all. The people BioWare is trying to attract never buy anything.

Fuck it. We can always look back at Dragon Age for what it was when it came out. I have zero expectation at this point. I'm not mad but they clearly don't have the time or resources to really take this thing in a direction anywhere meaningful. I get the sense this was probably just a side project for most of these devs who figured Fortnite and Overwatch do fairly well, let's just make that and phone it in. Whatever. With BG3, Elden Ring, DD2, etc. we've had some really great games come out latley that it makes this sting less but I'd be lying if I said this wasn't super disappointing. And yes, I know I'm jumping the gun a bit but this trailer said everything it needed to say.

Honestly, Bioware has been dead to me for years. The final nail in the coffin for me was their Mass Effect Andromeda, though I think you most will agree that it was long in decline before that. Anyway, I have been following the news on Dragon Age this on and off for a while, and I consider myself a fan, but on the fence on this game. I had low expections, and this managed to still disappoint me. So unless there is something serious to make me recoonsider, I'm out. For me the red flags are the art style, but also the tone, how the characters are presented, the lack of a sense of threat, how they present the enemies, the companions - if any one of these are accurate to the actual game, then its basically lore-breaking off the bat, and away from the dark fantasy everyone-can-die origins. As for story (which is important to me in these games), I don't think that's reason enough to play these games anymore if they don't otherwise grab you. It's important to understand that Dragon Age is a franchise, it's not a continuous story. It's not one author, or a team of creators with a vision. It's a company with an IP, and if there's no continuity in thr vision and the author/storytellers, then continuing the story is no more than bad fanfic as a cash-in. So while the ending to Inquisition and the set up of Dreadwolf was awesome, you shouldn't look to an IP to give that story its continuation or ending as envisaged. Another writer/group of writers have picked up the ball, and apparently already dropped it. They do not deserve your attention just because they own the IP.

yeah that's a good way to put it. a different art style isn't inherently bad, it's just that it's not what anyone was expecting for this game and I think the consensus is we don't like it, myself included.
These games are supposed to be darker games with darker themes, the artstyle feels downright silly. I wasn't even the hugest fan of the DAI style tbh but it felt like a natural progression from DA2. idk I am sad.
I've seen this happen a bunch of times in game development. They start out going for a detailed, realistic look but then run out of time & cash so suddenly make a decision to go "cartoony" because it's cheaper, easier and quicker. This is not a good sign.

Apparently, Mark Darah has already said that this is an In-engine trailer and not what the game actually looked like. Also, the gameplay leak from over a year ago looks like inquisition rather than a cartoon like the trailer.
The trailer did say in-engine. In-engine and in-game are two different things. The leak from over a year ago looked a lot more of what you would expect from a dragon age game. I personally think Bioware screwed up and gave some people a reason to have a negative opinion of the game. Hopefully, the gameplay reveal will fix that on Tuesday.
Its like people didnt get the message with elden ring and balders gate 3...The art direction matters because it sets the tone. Those games referrenced are its competition...
Baldurs gate did a terrible job in nailing the original baldurs gate tone. It's basically just DOS3 with the same story of DOS2
It didn't try for Baldur's gate, it tried for dark fantasy (albeit a goofy version of it) and succeeded.

I just can’t believe there’s a bunch of people in that company that looked at this trailer and thought “Yep, this is it, folks”. That disaster felt like a Guardians of the Galaxy Mobile Game trailer ffs
The part that truly disappointed me is “the Veil jumper” looked so out of place and gave Peebee vibes from Andromeda. Though Davrin looks like to be the best companion a Grey Warden and plus he’s got a Griffin.
Those are exactly my thoughts of both characters.
The Grey Warden character looks cool, and the Veil Jumper...well, when I saw her I simply said, the first disposable character in my party (IF I decide to buy the game).

Re-watching the trailers for the others games, there is an immediate difference not even just the art style, just everything about it. The first three trailers for the first three games made it obvious something was at stake; there was something to fight and something bad happening. It didn't spoil anything you couldn't figure out by playing the game and it hinted at enough to keep you interested.
This doesn't keep me interested at all. It looks genuinely like a Fortnite expansion pack or a DLC pack to pay for rather than an entire game. I want to see if the gameplay looks different when they showcase it, just in hopes of giving it something to be redeemed about, but I've lost much hope for this game in the several years spent waiting on it to the point I forgot it existed.
the face we go from 4 to 3 people in a party doesnt give me any excitement to fight a dragon. bet you 50 bucks none of the devs on this new DA game played origins+awakenings, 2 or Inquisition because it shows.

the reason why its not dark anymore is because those making it know nothing about living or working through hard times or confronting the darkness of reality. it shows. then again all the og devs/writers that made DA what it is are gone. what a sad day for dark fantasy settings.
I don't mind the art style but I hate the way presents the companions. It feels more like an Overwatch trailer than dragon age. I have a feeling the game is going to be like mass effect andromeda where every companion is a lolsorandom quirk chungus.

I'm holding out final opinions until the 15min demo, because it's common to outsource trailers/ads to other companies, and some movies/shows have been infamously misrepresented in the past through poor advertising. The style is likely final, but I'm holding out my opinion on the tone til we actually see the gameplay in a couple days.
Fingers crossed friend. I don't necessarily like the art but as you said the style for the trailer hopefully isn't the forewarning of the game and just someone along the way that should never had been in charge of this product for the trailer.

It's so weird. I was in their Discord, because I got notified by someone announcing the trailer. And I found myself surrounded by hyped fans.
I usually don't get surprised by these kinds of news, like the new Assassin's Creed. If I just stumbled on the trailer randomly, I would've expect it to be bad and understand that many are in the same mind. But spending time in the Discord somehow got me sucked into an echochamber. I became surprised that it got disliked that much.

To me, it's not only the trailer that doesn't inspire confidence, but everything surrounding the game, including it being remade multiple times and the mass layoffs from Bioware recently. There's a lot to be skeptic about this game, and yet as a fan there's a part of me that hopes I'm wrong.

Dragon Age : Disappointment
In past time, we had something call "templars". They were drugged monk formed to wield weapons and turned into guardsmen of the Church, capable of inhibiting magic in a supernatural way in the cost of their own freedom, getting more and more dependent and more and more mentally affected by the substance they needed to take in order to achieve such powers. They were knights, had an oath, but even them weren't perfect : a lot of them could be corrupted by dark desire, being possessed or mind controlled by demons. Some were more inclined towards extremism, thinking of mages like monster, and ending following the path of death for what they think was "good" for the whole.
Now, throw templar in a trash can, you have "mage killer".
such rich lore and compelling stories...they dont make'em like the used to anymore. thats for sure.
I don't remember exactly but if the story is set in Tevinter, then they have a different religious structure there. They have the Dark Divine and they accept magic practice, they are mageocracy. That's why they don't have templars.
the Templar & mages conflict were some of my favorite aspects of DA2 and into DAI and now they are tossing centuries worth of conflict, war, torture and imprisonment out the window so we can have a silly quirky mage killer??? The goofy upbeat tone of this trailer is genuinely baffling. We are hunting a god who wants to melt all life on earth for his own hubris and the trailer wants me to be in a silly goofy mood. No, I wanna crush the egg man where the frick is he at!?
Why was The Dread Wolf not featured in the trailer? Is he not part of the story any longer? I am seriously concerned.
This was more of a companion revel. Because I don’t even understand what the story is truly is about, stoping the Dreadwolf is a given.
The trailer was most likely meant to show us why the name of the game was changed. As well us showing the fans that they are changing the focus of the game from Solas to the group of companions.
They commented on it around a week ago with a "The Dreadwolf is not the only god you need to be concerned".

Exactly. Divinity Original Sin 2 had miles better combat than BG3. Having to use D&D rules really holds back the combat.
It's less about bg3 combat being good or bad, more about that fact that bg3 won GOTY with turn based combat, something so vile in nature to modern gamers(ff7 remake ditched in favor of real time action) proving that combat does NOT sell a game on its own

I went in with low expectations and was still disappointed. LIKE HOW is it possible. The choice of music, the way the trailer is made and everyone is introduced like we're in a marvel game/movie made no sense whatsoever. The artstyle doesn't jive with Dragon Age "dark fantasy" whatsoever. Also..where the hell is Solas? I may get hate for this, but these companions look very checklist`y and Bioware seem to have watched too much Rings of Power.
I'm holding out for the gameplay, but I fear that it won't be enough to save it. The writing is up in the air right now and this will probably be the last Bioware game I play. I'm also interested in the story, because I love the Dragon Age lore, but them catering to "modern audiences" is not something I hoped Dragon Age would turn into.

All great points but I'd like to add that I was especially disappointed by the lack of any original score to accompany the trailer. The score from Origins is one of the best from gaming's history in my opinion and perfectly embodies the (former) dark beauty of the setting. Even up until Inquisition the main theme still impresses and invokes grand fantasy. I suppose Tuesday will inform us more on this topic but this was just an area that I felt was underdiscussed.

I finished Dragon Age: Origins several times, and everything that followed was only a slow disappointment from Dragon Age 2: Retcon, change of tone, and an RPG which is no longer one.
DA: The Veilguard is probably the only Dragon Age that I will not buy if the gameplay of June 11 is trying to look like an Overwatch DLC and a vaguely distant RPG coating.
To be honest, I think Bioware has been in artificial coma for at least 10 years. What we see here is more like bad fanfiction of activists and is very far from what DA : Origins offered

It was the vibe of the trailer, it felt like a Fortnite mobile game monstrosity.
My thoughts are that it looks awful. It feels like we can ready the gravestone for Bioware because this should kill it.
The combat may be good and that's nice. But I can play games I already own for combat. If the story, characters, and visual style of the game all seem to be going into the garbage bin it's a hard pass. We'll see what the gameplay looks like. But they pretty much shot themselves in the foot with this and gave a terrible first impression.

The art is less of an issue for me than the overall tone/vibe of the trailer, which looks more like it's for an arena shooter like Fortnite or Overwatch than for a Dragon Age game. It raises a legitimate concern of EA insisting that its worst instincts be indulged.
I mean, sure, it might be a cinematic trailer, but trailers are always meant to do one thing: draw in the audience and market it. What we see in trailers is supposed to be an idea of what to expect when it comes to thw game itself. Maybe the trailer was jacked up and done completely wrong, but if so, if that's not the vibe they want to present, why did no one catch it in time to fix it?

I think this would have been about 30% less weird if they had chosen different backing music. To your point about it being dark fantasy - the trailer shouldn't be in a major key. Major inherently sounds happy and upbeat and is totally out of place in the franchise. It's a *bizarre* choice.

I think the name change is significant as well. The original name "Dreadwolf" the name of this Dark God figure really spoke to the Dark Fantasy aspect of the game, and actually sounded quite interesting to me. Even the new name "Veilguard" sounds very cartoonish and less exciting, reminding me of more modern things like Marvel/Overwatch/etc. I never fully played Inquisition because it felt like such a major departure from Origins, and every time I try it I hate it perhaps I'll try again before this comes out.
The cartoonish artstyle, the logo colors being completely off to the visuals shown, specially when compared to the Veil which is still green as shown on the trailer, and the dialogue with the Disney/Suicide Squad quality sounds completly off to a game in which the world is living at its edge.
Nothing really fits. This looks and sounds awful. And let me predict the following:
Varric will die the most generic heroic death possible. He sounds like a character that will die half way through the story, and completly stupid to add a cherry on top of this mess.
He probably will be just an advisor like Leliana in DAI

My expectations were low, hearing about the troubled development and how many of the staff and writers left, but to turn DA into this I really didn't expect. I'd made my peace awhile ago I wasn't likely to play anymore Dragon Age, I didn't hate Inquisition but the signs were obvious in gaming/Bioware writing was going to get worse for the coming decade or so.

The reason the art style ruins it is not because the art style itself, but they chose to market the game with this look and feel of silliness.
Telltale games were cartoony. But they didn't get shown Asa goofy pg rated super hero film...they still came off as open and emotional story driven games, just with cartoony visuals.

After watching that trailer I thought about you, my man. I always recalled you bringing up Dragon Age and Bioware in general with regard to gaming topics.
Personally, I was astonished by the tonal dissonance of the trailer, specially considering the ending of Trespasser and the Dreadwolf teasers. This used to be a dark fantasy setting and has slowly transformed into a high fantasy one and this trailer just confirms that direction is intentional.

This departure is just too much for me. I waited so long for this moment and i am honestly heartbroken.
I think the Grey Warden reveal sums up what’s wrong with this trailer nicely, clean. Someone fighting dark spawn should not look so clean. That warden should be covered in bile, blood, and the Blight. Instead he and his griffon (while cute looks like it’s part raccoon or potentially possum, tho it’s young so I guess it’s fine) look like they’re ready for a L’Oréal advert.
Same with the Qunari fighting the dragon, she should be covered in dirt and grime after an all the dust that dragon is kicking up. Instead she looks like she hopped out of the spa. I don’t even think inquisition looked so clinically clean when it came out, tho I’ve yet to go back and check.
I actually went back and watched the og origins trailer and you can watch as our intrepid party of hobos and underdogs, and hobo underdogs, get progressively dirtier and bloodier as the fight goes on.
The graphics for this trailer are great, beautiful, def not the style of dragon age and that’s fine, but I definitely understand the dissatisfaction in it looking too disneyfied or like Overwatch, Arcane, or Dishonored in some ways.
What I'm worried about is they chickened out. With Dreadwolf, the idea has been to redeem or kill stolas and I was really hoping for a 3rd option of Stolas wins, he gets what he wants, and the dalish are finally protected. What idea do you get from the title of Veilgaurd? To me it communicates a complete 180 on the point of the game. To completely drop the original concept to instead focus on saving the veil.
I'm really worried about the sudden potential shift in the game's direction and that it will under deliver because they plan to ship this out before the end of THIS YEAR! IN LESS THEN 6 MONTHS! I SHOULD BE HYPED AS HELL, I SHOULD BE BLASTING MY FRIEND'S PHONE WITH EXCITMENT. And instead all I'm feeling is discomfort, concern, and a little panic that this will be dragon age's mass effect andromeda.

I don't mind the art style personally. I mean its not like the previous installments had groundbreaking or realistic graphics for their time. Its the tone of the trailer that has me worried. Gives off more road-trip vibes rather than end of the world type atmosphere.

Dragon Age, Origins at least, was heavily inspired by a Song of Ice and Fire (GoT). So I guess this is Dragon Age: Season 8.
What gets to me is how the art style seems all over the place verik actually looks more or less realistic but then you have that necromancer guy who literally looks like a cartoon character rips straight out of Fortnite.
Did they have two separate art teams work on this game and just literally never communicate ?😂
If you want to play this game just for the story, just do what I do, wait a couple of days and a cinematic story video will come out. That's what I did for Inquisition.
I don't give a shit about combat. I don't play dragon age because of its combat. If they focuse on that, them can go to hell.
Watch the cinematic for origins then this one, this one clearly is catering to that famous " modern audience " that no one has ever found.
The modern audience is a myth, basically means “Twitter audience”, and catering to them is just incredibly counterproductive and doesn’t make any money at all. The people BioWare is trying to attract never buy anything.

Apart from the obvious issues with the art, themes, tones, etc. I was also burned out on all the "veil" related stuff from inquisition. Really hope the whole story isn't about that.
The trailer did say in-engine. In-engine and in-game are two different things. The leak from over a year ago looked a lot more of what you would expect from a dragon age game. I personally think Bioware screwed up and gave some people a reason to have a negative opinion of the game. Hopefully, the gameplay reveal will fix that on Tuesday.

Fuck it. We can always look back at Dragon Age for what it was when it came out. I have zero expectation at this point. I'm not mad but they clearly don't have the time or resources to really take this thing in a direction anywhere meaningful. I get the sense this was probably just a side project for most of these devs who figured Fortnite and Overwatch do fairly well, let's just make that and phone it in. Whatever. With BG3, Elden Ring, DD2, etc. we've had some really great games come out latley that it makes this sting less but I'd be lying if I said this wasn't super disappointing. And yes, I know I'm jumping the gun a bit but this trailer said everything it needed to say.
Man, they really had to "yassify" the Qunari in this trailer. This art style (if reflected in the gameplay reveal) is absolutely atrocious. And sadly, this seems unbelievably generic, a far cry from anything that is "dark fantasy."
I wish they’d go back to more of the DA:O designs, when at least most of the armor looked like armor.

So assuming there is going to be romance in this game... yah how do I go from romancing someone like Iron Bull in Dragon Age Inquisition to romancing cartoons? Just feels hella weird. Also go back and watch the Dragon Age Inquisition trailer and watch this and tell me which one does a better hype job. I remember hearing the music in the Inquisition Trailer and being like Hell ya where's the fight!
That's my issue. I can't feel attracted if they look like they're made of plastic.. Maybe a 18 years old who plays Fortnite can.. but not a 37 years old.

Honestly, Bioware has been dead to me for years. The final nail in the coffin for me was their Mass Effect Andromeda, though I think you most will agree that it was long in decline before that. Anyway, I have been following the news on Dragon Age this on and off for a while, and I consider myself a fan, but on the fence on this game.
I had low expections, and this managed to still disappoint me. So unless there is something serious to make me recoonsider, I'm out.
For me the red flags are the art style, but also the tone, how the characters are presented, the lack of a sense of threat, how they present the enemies, the companions - if any one of these are accurate to the actual game, then its basically lore-breaking off the bat, and away from the dark fantasy everyone-can-die origins.
As for story (which is important to me in these games), I don't think that's reason enough to play these games anymore if they don't otherwise grab you. It's important to understand that Dragon Age is a franchise, it's not a continuous story. It's not one author, or a team of creators with a vision. It's a company with an IP, and if there's no continuity in thr vision and the author/storytellers, then continuing the story is no more than bad fanfic as a cash-in.
So while the ending to Inquisition and the set up of Dreadwolf was awesome, you shouldn't look to an IP to give that story its continuation or ending as envisaged. Another writer/group of writers have picked up the ball, and apparently already dropped it. They do not deserve your attention just because they own the IP.
