Mathew contains Joseph geneology and Luke contains Mary.... Mary is the daughter of Heli ( not the biological daughter though) ... Heli had the right to claim Joseph as his heir since only the men are mentioned in the geneology and Heli didn't have a son. This dates back to the Numbers 27 and Numbers 36, the daughters of Zelophehad... So that means that if a man had no son, the daughters could have their father's inheritance if they they married men from the same tribe as their father and their son in law could be claimed as an heir.... That's why Joseph was listed as the son of Heli... The women could marry freely into whatever tribe, but inheritances can't be transferred from tribe to tribe... so that was the stipulation.
