From what I found online, the park opened in 1966 and closed in Sept 2015 after it was sold to a new owner (the original owner retired). Apparently the park was going to be redone with a western theme and remove the Flintstones (that's why there was western stuff on the train route), but apparently not much has happened with that in the last 2 years. I remember visiting this place in the 70s and 80s. We stayed at the campground. Those houses weren't cabins that guests stayed in. They were like look-in dioramas of the houses the Flintstones and the people of Bedrock lived in and worked in. They were decorated with lots of props and details. In that Stonewall Playhouse was a little animatronic show featuring a prehistoric animal music trio. There was a "drive in" that showed Flintstones cartoons every night too.

i visited this place this summer since it isn’t too far from where i live, and almost every original aspect is gone since they’ve started remodeling. there are a couple little statues left however. and they did stick with the old west theme but it’s pretty generic in my opinion. sad that there’s nothing really special about it anymore

I went here a few times as a kid back when it was still open. I loved to ride the train. There was also a campground for pitching tents. Went with my parents and grandparents when I was about 12 or so, back in 1994.
From what I remember most of the houses weren't used as cabins. They were just for display.

i went to this campground in the summer of 2012! this is like my third or fourth time watching this video (i love how surreal it is), so for those who want to read, i thought I’d share some things i remember about it! i was nine at the time, so some things are kind of hazy.
    - those houses were all like that - you could go in them, but there wasn’t really anything worth seeing. maybe when it first opened there were things inside them, but they were all as empty as they were in this video when i visited.
    - there was an animatronic show in that theatre! i remember fred, barney, and wilma being in it, but dino might have also been on stage. they weren’t in the best condition; i remember my mom describing them as “clunky”. if anyone is interested in seeing them, i have a link to some footage.
    - there was a mini golf course, but you had to pay extra to use it. it was tiny, and wasn't really themed any different than any other mini golf course.
    - those bones were there when i rode the train. again, maybe things were different when it first opened. (also, that t-rex is just as terrifying as I remembered)
that's all i can really recall without it verging into the territory of commentary (fun fact: that snake in the playground was how i found out i have claustrophobia) but if i can remember anything else i'll edit this to add more.

I read that the park opened in 1966 and closed in 2015. That explains why the structures are still in good shape. I noticed there were no figures of any of the characters though. Wonder where they went. Nice to see no evidence of vandalism.

I stopped there during a family vacation in the Summer of 2001. It was a road side attraction during daylight hours at the time. The buildings were not used as sleeping quarters. You could explore and take photos in them. One of the buildings had episodes of The Flintstones cartoon on a constant loop. They used to have life size character statues that you could pose with. The train looked different, but guests could go on a ride around the park with a tour guide who knew his dinosaur trivia and had corny jokes to match. There were more bones scattered along the journey, which I thought were faux back then, but it must have been a mix. The guide called them “fossils”. They had them strategically arranged in dinosaur shapes to look like they had dug them up in actual nature there and were actively excavating them. Looking back, it was quite impressive.

I think i would've been a part of the last generation of kids that grew up watching flintstones and other cartoon network classics to pass through that place. By the time my sisters post 2000 generation started watching cartoons it was the nickelodeon generation watching fairly oddparents, powerpuff girls, spongebob etc

It's been closed for like three years now so let's see what this place will look like in another five years. At least you don't have to pay to get in anymore to enjoy the place but it won't be maintained and it will be overgrown and maybe vandalized.

When Carowinds first opened on the NC/SC State Line, Hanna Barbara was represented there by the Flintstones, the Jetsons, Scooby Doo etc. There was even a Surf Island! All of that went away after Paramount bought the park. They changed the name of the rides already there (the wooden roller coaster was renamed the "Hurler" in honor of "Waynes World"), and introduced a "water gun coaster" at the Rugrats themed ride. Now Carowinds has been sold again!

The park was started by two men from Chamberlain, SD who bought the rights from Hanna-Barbera to build it. They constructed all of the houses and statues themselves out of concrete and the giant Dino statue was actually brought here in two pieces and put together when it arrived. They even fashioned an old 1962 Volkswagen to look like a Flintstones car and used it to advertise the park when it first opened.

Then after the show out of a closet Fred and Barney would come out ( two people in mascot outfits) and take photos with patrons. City Hall and Post Office at 1:16. If I remember correctly, you could buy post cards and mail them there. Most of those buildings were cordoned off and you were just allowed to peek inside. There were characters made of concrete so you could see who lived or worked there. There was a barber, bank (with bank robber), etc. The Mt. Rushmore lookalike was "Mt. Rockmore". The movie theater played Flintstones cartoons, and you could buy popcorn, etc. in the concession stand. There was a walk up burger shop where you could buy Brontoburgers (buffalo burgers) and huge purple ice cream cones. That was near the big Dino statue. There was a building that housed a grocery store, and I remember one end of it having a laundromat, but that is memories from when I was a kid in the 70s, so I might be wrong on that one. I don't remember the western themed stuff. That may have been added in the later years. Great memories here for multiple generations of kids. It was a real treat to get to camp here, swim in the pool, etc. Kids could just roam free.

I’ve been watching you for a couple years but I guess I started after you went here.
Anyway, I used to come here when I was a kid. I’ve been there maybe 5 or 6 times as a kid.
There used to be some kind of go-cart or golf cart type thing outfitted as a flint stones car that you could ride in. Someone who worked at the park drove it and you could sit in the back seat.
Also all the houses aren’t actually cabins they were just for looking at. 🙂

Back in the day there were two more Flintstones Bedrock Cities near me, too - one in Kelowna, British Columbia and another in Bridal Veil Falls, British Columbia. I wouldn't be surprised if there were many, many more out there!

i know of the flintstones sadly not my show but still neat to see this was expecting adam the woo to pop out at any moment,
plus its a shame it gone but i think you'd of loved the abandoned blobby world which was a 90's hit but is now sadly destroyed

You said that the place is an abandoned theme park, but it's actually something that is part of a campground that is having everything Flintstones Related removed do to the WB Contract not being renewed.

When is a sink not a sink? When it's a stone.
The Flintstones are still alive and well, and so are many of the Hanna Barbera properties. Scooby Doo and Tom and Jerry still regularly churn out direct-to-video specials every year or two, Wacky Races got a reboot for Boomerang's new streaming video service, Top Cat has appeared in 2 recent direct-to-video movies, and several other Hanna Barbera characters have been licensed for collectible action figures, Funko bobbleheads and figurines, and amusement grade plush dolls.
And of course, the Flintstones not only have their names and faces on children's vitamins and Post cereals, but a year or two ago they also had a direct-to-video special crossing over with WWE, of all things. So they're all out there in some form. I'm glad I grew up in a time when 60s and 70s cartoons were still an easy nostalgic thing to make good money from. The 90s and early 2000s was a great time to be exposed to early TV animation, which has influenced my artstyle a lot.

Thanks, for the video. I went to this Flintstone Village several times when I was a kid. Those houses were not cabins for guests. They were just playhouses. Kind of sad to see it all abandoned. It was pretty popular in the seventies.
