+Andrew_Owens I can see your perspective but we have to be careful here as to not give a blind defense to any criticism of a bad idea or group of bad ideas. Religion is one of those "sacred" set of ideas that have always demanded this special privilege. What is more sacred here? The human right to have their own ideas and to be critical of others or a set of ideas written by men many years ago that claim to be the absolute word of god? Of course not all Muslims are bad people, but good people can still do and support very bad things especially when convinced by their religion that its the right thing to do. I think +A Skeptical Human is criticizing islam and I do not see anything wrong with that. It should be critiqued, as should any idea, especially ideas which call for acts of violence as do all three of the Abrahamic religions, and what's the alternative? That it is accepted without question? That I argue is the greatest trespass of humans rights and represents the most apprehensible loss of freedom, to be literally imprisoned in thought by an unquestionable ideology.

These shows really need people like me to speak about our experiences because clearly some liberal Americans don't know a thing about islam. We have a saying in Turkish which translates as " The sound of drum comes as beautiful from a far." and that's the problem with liberals and islam. Islam is indeed the mother of bad ideas.
***** There's the problem with you people right there. You can't distinguish between Muslim and terrorist. Brevik wasn't a Muslim, so Bill Maher CHOSE not to put him in his list. It's nice to see a reasonably calm discussion around this topic. It's interesting to see how defenders of various religions quickly resort to anger, shouting, calling people bigots. For example: see how the lady at the end starts getting angry when her faith background (presumably Christianity) is implicitly criticised.
Bill Maher says, ""Doesn't it say it all, how insecure religion is? It's such a house of cards, that if anyone says anything or draws a cartoon, they get worried." ...And without even a hint of irony, the Christian gets all uppity and offended!
The difference, Bill, is that simply being offended by speech you don’t like (and saying so) is NOT the same as being offended by speech you don’t like and taking action (silencing through cancel culture or murder) against said speech and speakers. Not surprisingly, Christians generally don’t appreciate you making fun of religion but that’s their right to be offended and complain about you, as it is your right to make fun of them. To call all religion a “house of cards” because many of its members take offense at what you say about them is no different than you getting all butt hurt at the mere EXISTENCE and protection of religion. Freedom to offend and to be offended live under the same roof. You both think you’re right, but your name-calling only serves to weaken your position here.
@@JorgeGomez-um9qb She is not fully right. Christianity also did the same thing in the 16th century. The question is why the Christian do not do that anymore and why Muslim keep doing it and even advocating to do it. If you look at the Christianity in Europe, they are so different between each other. In Protestanism alone there are so many sects of them. Or just read the book of Galatians. You can find that there are so many kind of Christians in there. Hence, those Christians tired to accuse between each other that the others are heretics or not. That is why they agreed to set seperation of state and church to make fair system between all of them (John Locke Letter of tolerance) However, in Islam is different. Islam is found by the Muslims and there were not so many sects of Muslims. In Islam is clear that if you have a doubt who are the real Muslims are, you can look at the early Muslims and Sahabat(the Mohammad's companion) behavior and conduct together with Sunnah from the Hadith Shahih. Which are horendus. So, albeit there are so many kinds of Muslim, the potential to be an extremist is high in Islamic faith than in Christianity.
Wow what time of night is this show on in the states? In Britain we have nothing like this. Having grown up non left wing comediennes talking about 'heavy shit' in the real world whilst also joking about it is incredibly refreshing. Also I thought swearing on US television was a no no. I'll shall watch more of this, I'm very impressed.
Well, it's on HBO, which is a subscription network, so you can probably stream it from their site if you're willing to buy a subscription. You should do that, 'cause they've got a lot of other great stuff too.
What's the Islam-version of "Uncle Tom"? Because that's what Salman Rushdie is. And Iran has always condemned Sunni Islamist terrorism. Unlike Amerika, the UK or France.
+Enrique Godinez Sure. We have three examples already. First there is the period of French history known as "the Terror" from which we get the word "terrorisme". Secularism was absolute! And then there is the Stalinist age where over 10 million were killed. Finally there is the Chinese revolution where temples were destroyed. When you finish tearing down Notre Dame, Saint Peters, the Taj Mahal and Angkor Wat, you really will have a perfect world. An even better one would be with no people.
Glenn D So because of some dictators that were and are atheists that means religion is the key? Yeah because religion is doing so much good to the world and humanity. The first thing they should do is tax those motherfucking churches.
Enrique Godinez I didn't say that. What I am saying is that there is evil that comes from non-religious sources so a world without religion would not be a perfect world. I do though believe that ridding the world of radical islam would make the world a better place.
This is one of your best Bill. Having on Salman Rushdie was a stroke of good luck if not brilliance, considering you are discussing Islam. I can tell you respect him, which is more than you give to most of your guest, but this fifteen minute was well worth watching. I don't always agree with your politics, but this one struck a cord in me. THANKS !
Frank Houttave Wrong. If the Catholics had all become Protestant or vice versa, it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference _ they would still have fought until the 1990s. Read the Good Friday Agreement which ended the conflict: I doubt if you'll find much or anything about religion. Also, you're leaving out the fact that most of what you call the "Protestant" side's actual fighting was done by British state forces (with Loyalist paramilitaries playing a much smaller role). You're also leaving out the fact that what you call the "Catholic" side celebrate Protestants like Wolfe Tone, Robert Emmet, and Charles Stuart Parnell as major historical heroes. When what you call the "Catholic" side launched their struggle for equal Civil Rights in the 1960s, one of their main leaders was Ivan Cooper, a Protestant, and the campaign looked to the Protestant Baptist Martin Luther King as its inspiration. The conflict which erupted (after the Civil Rights Movement was destroyed by Bloody Sunday 1972) was about nationality, not religion. It's true that some clergymen on the (British) Unionist side became politicians and sometimes used the phrase "the Protestant people". But I repeat: if both sides had all become the same religion overnight it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference to the conflict. Someone (I forget who) said that, in Northern Ireland, religion is not the *cause* of difference _ but it *is* the "badge of recognition". I think that's about right.
No, the buddhists are reacting to the fact that the Bengali and Pakistani government have been giving money to the Rohingya ethnic tribes for decades so that they can uprise and separate the section of Burma to annex with Bangladesh, so the monks are only reacting to violent extremism of the muslims who started the entire thing. Do some actual reading before you give the same cliche answers.
Islamophobia is another word for criticising the death cult. No other religion has such a term. Islam is different. And needs to either be massively reformed or entirely dissolved. Never stop fighting.
Jocko Jonson Exactly. With the exception of the 969 Movement which is nationalist more than a religious stronghold, religion isn't the same across the board.
+Jocko Jonson Try googling Buddhist Terrorism you will find that there are 'fundamentalist' Buddhists in Asia and territorial Buddhists in Shri Lanka who have and are killing people of other religions..
Srinivasan P.B Maher almost always has people with opposing and different views on his show. I think it makes the show more interesting and funny, but maybe that's just me.
If extremism is just a modern "wahabist, salafist" phenomenon, what about the islamification of north africa, afghanistan, central asia, middle east, persia, north-western india, anatolia and spain? Did they also learn from Saudi wahabists of 20th century?
Don't forget what the Christian's in the Americas did to black people who are also human beings, the lynchings, the castrating, the sexual abuses etc. don't try to dismiss it. Stop blaming the Muslims alone, other religions commit atrocities in the name of God which is a real shame. Jehovah is love not hate.
Bill, i like that" when there are so many bad apples, there is something wrong with the orchard" unfortunately that is humanity because this shit goes down globally! (pardon my french)
It's really depressing to watch this knowing that so much shit has happened since this discussion, just over a year later, and more is likely to happen after this comment is posted.
Christianity and Judaism exist now in the cultures that have "won" the world. Amongst more civilized secular people who have developed modern civilization based on their secular ideas (e.g the U.S. founding fathers' study of Locke) the peasants who cling to Christianity and Judaism have had to tone down their following of these barbaric Stone Age and Bronze Age religions. They have had to ignore much of the Bible, and even after all the major edits of that ridiculous collection of Middle Eastern fables, they have to heavily cherry pick it in order to be accepted amongst civilized, intelligent people (except maybe in the American South and Midwest.) That doesn't make them better religions, it just demonstrates how secularism is better in that it can tame and contain even the most primitive dogma and find a way to assimilate and support even the most unintelligent members of secular society.
AKASales Funny that you ask. In my opinion, which at least I consider informed, those responsible for our economic problems maintain their hold on power using religion. They are the people whose ignorant supporters tend to claim to have "faith" and be Christian. The corrupt wealthy in this country are Republicans, and they are supported by the religious right in this country, and the overall dramatic shift toward trickle-down, tax cuts for the wealthy, middle class-destroying economics since Reagan is the reason we have our debt and financial problems.
Keksi Yeah, debt was created by stupid people, who I'm contending are mainly the so called "conservative Christians", and corrupt wealthy people, who I'm contending are mainly supported by the "conservative Christians". Those are people, but they're not "just like me." I think you have clueless covered for the both of us.
Matthew 5:17-18: Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.........thou shalt not kill , love your neighbor .....scripture contradicts the law ...people forget the law and try to be like god
Ryu Hayabusa The scripture does not contradict the law in Matt. 5:17-18. Jesus clearly says the ten commandments stand, which is God's laws (more so guidelines) in Matt 5:17-18. The issue you have is that you think God's laws are the 603 laws of the 613 mitzvot (Jewish Laws). Those numerous laws also known as the covenant codes, holiness codes, and Leviticus codes include stoning woman, circumcision, and hating gays. Jesus had no concern of these JEWISH laws, even correcting the Jewish Pharisees "you have heard" and "it has been said" when he taught God's (his own) laws. He further befriended atheists, adulterers, thieves, and sinners before the JEWS sent the Romans after him. Theological understanding, you need it.
You declare yourself as god the moment you initiate force against your fellow man ......the letter J didn't come about till the 17th century ..jew Jesus Jehovah are all inacurate ....the English bible is written in code .....Paul wrote scripture not Christ ......Judaism/Christianity/Islam 3 kings. 666 ....Luke 22:36 ..He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. Matthew 26:52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword..... Do u see this bipolar duality ?
A Muslim can never be an American, French, German , Spanish , Australian because in islam there is no concept of territorial boundary they will be Muslim and only Muslim i haven't seen or heard a Muslim say i am German Muslim they put their religion first and then country
I don't understand y y should u provoke someone and call it courage its same as going near a wild animal and provoking it and when it attacks put all the blame on animals saying they r wild and dangerous. U have other topics to discuss rather then making fun of someones religion and calling it freedom of speech
If I offended you would you kill me? No I suspect not. Enough said. Critique, criticism and 'offending' people is part of life in any democracy. We do not kill.
Edward Kirkhope I agree with you but is it so hard not to pick up a pencil and draw Muhammed? I think it's pretty easy to be respectful and just not draw him, correct?
Superman13195 You're correct when you said "Muhammad prevent drawings of him to prevent worship" but wrong when you tried to imply that Muslims worship Muhammad like God xD
Bill Maher is more successful than he's ever been. I felt like a part of my humanity was lost over the winter break without his presence. And since when did his videos accrue over a million views, and in one week.
For hundreds and thousands of years this kind of conversation would been impossible to have. We would have been having it at the risk of our lives. Religion now comes to us in this smiling face, ingratiating way because it's had to give so much ground and because we know so much more. But you've no right to forget the way it behaved when it was strong and when it really did believe that it had god on it's side. -Christopher Hitchens.
Hey Bill I agree with you on practically no issues except this one (maybe a couple more) so I'm subscribing, even though you hate my pick for President...lol
Carly apparently hasn't read Qur'an 8:39, 9:5, and 9:29, etc. She also has not read the over 100 verses in the Qur'an that strongly urge Muslims to wage violent jihad against non-Muslims who stand in the way of implementing Islamic Law. It IS religion, Carly - a promise that you can avoid "hell", and get into "Paradise", if you fight for one particular god who's #1 choice for our role model (for all time) was MOHAMMAD.
Carly Fiorrinna won my heart with her comments about Islam and the Muslims. What a sharp-minded, eloquent and warm lady! American Italians have contributed a big deal apart from the Mafia to the well-being of United States of America ! (she should continue and if possible assist Brigitte Gabriel from Act4America in the fight against radical fanatical Islam if her time permits).

These Muslim extremists are proving him right.
Salman Rushdie: We can not give a fucking inch. Fuck yeah.

The problem is not extremism. The problem IS islam. I am an ex-muslim who lives in Turkey.
He says "religion is insecure" and suddenly she gets all defensive. I laughed, I don't know about you.
It's nice to see a reasonably calm discussion around this topic. It's interesting to see how defenders of various religions quickly resort to anger, shouting, calling people bigots. For example: see how the lady at the end starts getting angry when her faith background (presumably Christianity) is implicitly criticised.
Haha yeah she even said that we are in the 24th century.
+Arto Kulmala Religious people are like sheep.
+Enrique Godinez No she said it was the 21st century.
***** Not the same at all.
+DpKingify What Atheism was in the 20th Century under Joseph Stalin ?
Bill Maher says, ""Doesn't it say it all, how insecure religion is? It's such a house of cards, that if anyone says anything or draws a cartoon, they get worried."
...And without even a hint of irony, the Christian gets all uppity and offended!
But she is right.
That is why they agreed to set seperation of state and church to make fair system between all of them (John Locke Letter of tolerance)
However, in Islam is different.
He made a good point. Mike Pence may be a homophobe, but he doesn't toss gay people off buildings so he's better

I know Salman was making a serious point, yet every time he said "the but brigade" I giggled.
Especially at first, before he explained 😄
"To cowards, courage looks stupid". I could not have said it better myself, Bill.
I am so happy to see Real Time on TH-cam. Great show from last night.
Salman Rushdie man
We need more guys like him
What's the Islam-version of "Uncle Tom"? Because that's what Salman Rushdie is. And Iran has always condemned Sunni Islamist terrorism. Unlike Amerika, the UK or France.
@@bhunji1850 Yet Iran seem to treat women like shit. But atleast MAGA autocrat losers are almost up there in USA.
A world without religion would be the perfect world.
It would be a start, but evil manifests itself in many different forms.
+Enrique Godinez No exactly. Stalin, Mao, Kim Jung - all atheists
Glenn D
So because of some dictators that were and are atheists that means religion is the key? Yeah because religion is doing so much good to the world and humanity. The first thing they should do is tax those motherfucking churches.
Enrique Godinez I didn't say that. What I am saying is that there is evil that comes from non-religious sources so a world without religion would not be a perfect world. I do though believe that ridding the world of radical islam would make the world a better place.
Carly Fiorina has an incredibly smug, self satisfied way of speaking.
THANKS !
"When there are this many bad apples, there is something wrong with the orchard." OMG! That is so apt! LOL
Salman Rushdie is a hero! Huge respects from Pakistan
the thing I love about Bill Maher is that though he is a liberal, he does not mindlessly support the stupid acts of the minorities.
Muslims are not a minority in the world...
I could watch Bill Maher for a career.

Even Buddhist monks in Myanmar are losing their shit, and have done horrendous things in Myanmar, in Sri Lanka. Any Religion + Politics = Disaster
fallen Angel in Ireland and N-Ireland catholics and protestants fought untill the 90's over religion, ... and they're both christians.

She is a politician...
Bill Maher.. I love you.. so much. I think we are somehow universally connected and share the same thoughts and ideas on everything.
LOL "... well known writer of fiction, Charles Darwin..."
That's funny. I like you Mr. Rushdie.
AKASales
Funny that you ask.
Ryu Hayabusa
The scripture does not contradict the law in Matt.

Very good discussion. Good panel.

It’s just Christianity that lost the power over their followers not other religions!

Hey Bill I agree with you on practically no issues except this one (maybe a couple more) so I'm subscribing, even though you hate my pick for President...lol
I fear less for humanity because this show exists.
Excellent!!
An interesing educational insight into what's it all about and WHY?
