Remember Jerry GOLDEN BOY Trimbel? That guy could kick. Lots of highlights of him on youtube. I miss the PKA and WKA fights. BAD BRAD HEFTON! Tommy "THE TORNADO" Williams with his patented spinning back kicks. I always remember him doing left and right spinning backkicks on people he cornered (The Tornado).

Kickboxing takes serious cardio, every kick is the equivalent of many punches, a big high kick might take require the same energy as 20 punches. You see boxers do shadow boxing where they throw a lot of quick punches, doing that with kicks is practically impossible....doing back to back kicks for even a minute is exhausting

Gotta say Rufus boxing was superb - truly pro boxing level in my books to be able to do what he did with his hands and movement for 12 rds. In fact, you rarely ever see a kickboxer with such boxing finesse especially at this magnitude. His kicks were good and spectacular but he could have done more damage with his linear kicking, less commitment with those round kicks and less jumping as the fight is 12rds and this takes energy and distance to travel. Nevertheless, one of the best unpredictability technical kickboxers ever under full contact rules.

Bill Superfoot Wallace speaks on this. People who don't prefer the front kick tend to stay away from him because of broken toes. I'm all front kicks and spinning back or donkey kicks that always get under the elbows (angles). Some people hate the best kick in the game, the front kick, also known by a few as the longest jab.

Shortly and I mean VERY shortly after this the Jet got on the juice and got ripped to go fight bigger guys in K-1. The muscle really took away from his movements and speed. But he still had good career because of that left hand he had that changed fights really fast .But I remember seeing how much smaller he was compared to those big heavyweights In K-1 LA Banner was like 6.4 235lbs Rick was 5,10 180 off juice and 202 on juice. He almost had labanner beat. He had labanner hurt bad but those leg kicks took the jet out

I think he should have instead competed as middleweight with no extra muscle fighting guys like Holzken and Roosmalen after obviously serious training for knees and leg kicks but if I am not mistaken they didn't have that smaller division on k-1 back then or did he or maybe more money was with heavyweights or he though he could beat big boys easily with speed and movement.

In my opinion, even as a Taekwondo fighter, it has to go to Theriault, because, he knocked Rufus for 6, it would have been fight over, if that had happened 15 seconds earlier, Rufus was too dazed, he wouldn't have recovered enough even after a standing count . Otherwise it was a close fight overall, The younger man coming strong in the last few rounds, but Theriault was more accurate for most of the fight and his straight ahead aggression pushing Rufus back for most of the fight counts too.

Je ne comprends pas comment se fait il que Theriault est pu perdre se combat puisque c est lui qui a forcé le combat a tous les ronds normalement les juges sont plus en faveur de celui qui fonce sur l autre . never been knocked down before until this fight? Bullshit! In 1988 you were lying flat on the canvas several times when a muay thai fighter destroyed your legs (you can be picky and say a fall due to a leg kick doesn't count as a knockdown...that doesn't take away the fact that a mediocre muay thai fighter belted the shit out of you). Don't come up with this 'never been knocked down before' crap.

Most def! Roufus was badly beaten by Changpuek and knocked down several times, maybe 7 times? Rick has incredible heart for sure, but stick to the facts Rick. (Memory is reality I guess but, 7 times Rick!)

Kiatsongrit was not a "mediocre muai thai fighter" as the dude above says.
He was a well known fighter at the time, one of the top ranked.

@@HexenStar No you're right, I should not have used the word "mediocre". What I meant was that Kiatsongrit was "too heavy", and competition in Thailand was more intense in the lighter weight divisions, so he had to fight abroad rather that pursue Lumpinee and Radja glory. So coming into the fight against Rick he was really an unknown quantity. It also shows that in 1988 you could have easily picked twenty or thirty Muay Thai fighters (regardless of weight) that would have belted the shit out of the best kickboxer of that era being Rick Roufus.

@@joehillary6981 Handball and water polo have a lot of similarities - yet are two
different sport disciplines. Handball player wins - as long as they're playing
handball. Water polo player wins - when they're playing water polo. This should
be remembered. Handball team VS soccer team...soccer team wins, when
soccer rules apply. But if handball rules apply - then it is unlikely. All the
conclusions should derive from this equation. Rick Roufus losing does
not "show" anything. As the other "Jet" demonstrated the exact opposite.
The only conclusion that we can draw from that fight is, - that the technical
skill and "fight IQ" that Rick possessed at the time - were insufficient to make
up for the hole in defense against otherwise a reasonably matched fighter,
      that Kiatsongrit indeed was.
Otherwise, either both play soccer - or both play handball. In the former option -
the handball player will either have to focus on soccer skills, - or definitely lose
against an equally skilled soccer player. Or in the later variant - a soccer player
will have to learn handball techniques, - or definitely lose against an equally
skilled handball athlete. Same goes for all sports disciplines that are allegedly similar, (ALLEGEDLY!), while in reality they are nothing alike.

@@HexenStar From a broad-spectrum, apples and oranges angle what you’re saying isn’t wrong. A kickboxer fighting a boxer under boxing rules - the boxer should win no doubt. However, in some sports that have a lot of similarities, it isn’t as cut and dried to conclude that one team/individual will win provided that only rules of their sport are followed. Muay Thai vs Kickboxing is one. Rugby League vs Rugby Union is one. Even though Muay Thai always gets the short end of the stick when it comes to compromising rules to follow when fighting a kickboxer, there are instinctive variables and an irreplaceable toughness which come into play hence the Muay Thai fighter wins the fight more often than not. A rugby league player switching to rugby union isn’t as straightforward at the outset as he would need to familiarize with the technical differences re positional play and whatnot. However his rugby league background/instincts makes him a much more formidable rugby union player in a relatively small amount of time (as opposed to the other way around, i.e. from rugby union to rugby league, may take longer to become successful).
