  • Northern Shrikes (Lanius borealis) are about the same size as an American Robin (Turdus migratorius), but their behavior have earned them a bad reputation. They are commonly known as Butcherbirds for impaling their prey, consisting of anything from insects to small mammals and even small songbirds, on thorns or spikes (including the spikes found on barbed wire). Northern Shrikes use bushes and high poles to survey the area for food and can be aggressive when defending their territory to other shrikes. They sometimes hang around bird feeders, hunting songbirds. At the beginning of spring Northern Shrikes often specialize in hunting displaying male songbirds like Common Redpoll (Acanthis flammea) until the snow melts and they can return to hunting their favorite prey, voles.
