I've been seeing this young attractive lady with long fake eyelashes get on my bus in the mornings for about the past year now. The other morning she got on and I decided at last to pluck up the courage, smile at her and say "Hi, you alright?" as she sat down directly opposite me. She responded with "fuck off you ugly weirdo!" I responded back with "those fake eyelashes of yours make you look like a fucking giraffe. Maybe the bus driver could use you to clean these dirty windows with them fuckers!" She then started crying and shot off upstairs. The other passengers gave me filthy looks like it was all my fault.
Maybe she didn't need to call me an ugly weirdo just because she didn't like my looks and for the fact I don't look like a bad boy with big buldging muscles. Maybe she didn't need to call me an ugly weirdo just because I clearly don't drive and get the bus to work every day. Maybe she didn't need to call me an ugly weirdo just coz I wasn't wearing a shirt and tie and therefore don't work in an office and earn a shit load of money. Maybe she didn't need to call me an ugly weirdo just coz I took the effort to take an interest in her and say hi! Us men have feelings too ya know so maybe women on public transport need to stop being so fucking judgemental of us men when we are just clearly being friendly. Just a thought!....

There is also the fact that most human beings usually don't have sufficient confidence to express themselves fully when surrounded by other strangers. It's always like that in big cities. You can't possibly get to know everyone so people just don't bother trying. If you go to a small town or village you'll often find that the opposite is true. Since there are so few people, people know nearly everyone else and they will often say hello to you even if they don't know you.

No it isn't. It's just weird to behave like this in largely populated cities. People need a bit of context as to why you're talking to them. Personally people who walk right up to your face and say "HI HOW ARE YOU" are either crazy or trying to sell something.
People need context to spur a conversation, especially in a city of millions crammed together.

I've been living in London for two years and I actually find people to be quite nice with strangers, even the weird ones. Most of these situations were actually weird and cringy to watch, but if you repeat this experiment in any big city of any country in the world you obtain the same result. The truth is when you live in a big city you meet so many crazy people that when someone approach you in a slighty different way you can't help being suspiscious, but it has nothing to do with being rude or anything. A normal person would understand this and will not approach you staring like a creep and then suddently "HI HOW ARE YOU" cause it's confusing.

It's probably just because people think he's crazy with how intrusive his "hellos" are. Would you not be freaked out if a complete stranger in a straight voice just lent toward you and said "Hello how are you doing" out of no where?
Besides who actually likes being on the tube, it's usually packed and you just wanna get off.

I live in Brazil, and you can imagine that here we are overfriendly and would smile and say Hi to everyone, but not in the South of Brazil (where I live). We are known as the coldest people of the country, and yes it's very normal to ignore strange people here. It's sad to admit but I do it as well, and my boyfriend from the North always tell me that I am a very mannerless person for doing this. We are a miserable bunch nowadays.

People who aren't from places like the UK wouldn't understand. We're taught from an early age to not talk to strangers, we carry this on into adulthood. We feel genuinely uncomfortable when people try to do this. It's British custom to be quiet, especially on the tube
If you need help with something, we will help you, but we don't like small talk with strangers.

This video is great, its strange how the underground makes people so anti social. I was once on the underground and a women was sat crying for a few minutes, no one seemed to notice or care. I was only person on the train to acknowledge her and sit next to her and at least ask if she was okay, she said it was nothing to worry about but still some simple compassion goes along way she thanked me for my concern and I felt like i'd done something amazing. Simple things like this people won't forget for a long time I know I won't, you've just got to step out of this social taboo of silence and if you feel like saying something just do it you'll probably never see these people again. Better living a life following your instincts than living a life with regrets of having held you tongue.

    • @lazrseagull54

I'm not sure it's the mode of transport that makes people antisocial. I reckon if you tried this experiment on the tube in a small city in Italy or Spain or even France or Holland, people would be friendlier.
