This is much discussed: yes, for the official video, they've got Geoff double-tracked during Ursula's solo. But for live performances, Eli sometimes does the background bass part -- he's the one who's available, since he's not singing anything else at the time. And while his voice doesn't sound _as_ good as Geoff's down in that low register, he CAN sing down there. (The more you study VoicePlay, the more you realize, they all have incredible vocal range.)
One thing I noticed ‘symbolically’ about the French Chef bit - it divides below the sea and above. While it sounds very bouncy and kind of happy, both J (Sebastian) and Geoff (Ursula) look rather disgusted while it is sung because he is singing about killing and eating their fellow sea creatures! I especially love the look from Geoff/Ursula that conveys ‘and they call ME the villain? But Ariel joins in on the ‘so delish’ and so is changing to someone from above.
One small detail that you didn’t mention is that at 26:05 Geoff says something about the Caspian Sea which is surrounding countries such as Iran, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan (Arabic country’s) what’s followed is a chromatic descending scale from Rachel which is very common in arabic music.
not to be pedantic but none of those are arabic countries; they're muslim majority countries (edit to clarify, it would be more accurate to say that that was inspired by middle eastern/indian musical structures because music theory from over here is completely different than in the west and follows something called "maqams" instead of standard scales that are found in western music theory)
I wonder if you noticed that the 2nd “sing it with me now” is actually J. None, and Geoff turns around and looks at him like “What the heck, dude?” I see the benefit of your only hearing the song- you do notice new things. But there are so many visual things going on (this is such a visual group) that sometimes I miss your reaction to that stuff. Regardless, great reaction! And nice knot!! Happy New Year, and get better!
I never noticed that before! It reminds me of “Daddy Sang Bass,” when Earl went an octave or two higher than normal, and he and Geoff exchanged glances like “WTF was that?” and “I don’t know where that came from!”
As far as I remember, Sebastian starts out on his own on "Kiss the girl". But even if he doesn't, the joining animals emphasize the assistance he needs to convince the reluctant prince.
Hope you feel better soon! I just LOVE the note change on the last "world" of Part of Your World going into Under the Sea -- it sets up the key change so beautifully!
Lots of fun watching this. i also heard a lot I hadn't noticed before. VoicePlay's new one is fantastic and Geoff is about to drop the most beautiful solo video in his usual Geoff and the Geofftones style. It is utterly utterly beautiful visually, and vocally.
This _was_ an amazing analysis, to be fair! (and i know it's an algorithm thing, but I'm never going to be upset for _more_ analysis content alsdfjkasdf)
You asked about Kiss the Girl and why Eli starts it alone. I think it is a thematic choice, as in the movie Scuttle (who we just heard Eli play) starts with some bird mating calls before Sebastian puts an end to it, starting Kiss the Girl on his own but slowly adding other creatures in the lagoon where Ariel and Eric are floating to the mix. As a bandleader he wants to make sure each thing he brings in to join him furthers the ambience, gets a nice entrance, and blends well. All things Voiceplay prioritizes too! Layne arranged this but I know Eli has arranged for them in the past and so this gets VERY VERY META if you think about it!
Thank you Mortius for this analysis. I also love the fact that you do it without the video. I am a soprano and when I have to learn an arrangement I will do a complete run through with the group. but will also take it and learn it by playing it on my own and running through it with my eyes closed to get the "feel" of the piece, if you understand that. It makes a difference.
Thank you for a deliteful start of the new year. I truly hope you will get well soon. I found myself closing my eyes to notice the things you mentions. Happy new year to you and your family.
I absolutely love your reaction and analysis videos, and like you I love, love, love it when Layne gets a chance to sing/solo/rap. In this one is is channeling a crazy French chef for all he's worth, and he does it so well.
Yes, I know that it would make your videos longer but, having seen reactors who listen through twice, and also having seen your analysis videos like this one, I would LOVE to see you listen and react TWICE, at least to VoicePlay!! The first time visually with your first impressions and observations, and the second time just like this time! A blind listen and musical analysis!! Please consider giving that a try at least once to see what folks think and how they react! I love when you point out things you hadn't noticed that I hadn't even noticed, just like this time, and with VP's theatrics it's easy to get lost in the video and miss the subtleties of the music!! I'm loving your reactions and insights, and I hope you are feeling much better!! All the best in the new year!
Hannah Bayles voiceplay reaction was actually the first Voiceplay video i ever watched. Now I've watched every single voiceplay video and am now a patreon
i normally don't like analysis videos as much as reaction videos but i enjoy yours. the excitement u have is infectious even though i don't understand anything you say since I'm not musically inclined what so ever. 😂
I thought that I had learned everything about this song and you still hit me with more knowledge - and on cough medicine too! Thanks for powering through :)
I have described some of Home Free vocalists like that: Adam Chance: smokey BBQ, Tim: coffee, (really dark bass, occasionally light, high tenor) Adam Rupp: sounds he eats an entire closet of band gear for breakfast. Chris Rupp: candy (bright honey with bell tones or high harmonies, at times rich and smooth like toffee).
I really love your reactions, and I personally think that this medley and the Moana Medly videos are two of the best things on the internet. Thank you for sharing your passion and delight, you really made my day!
Thank you for the analysis- that was super fun! I hope you feel better soon, and can fully shake it off before getting back to school- I think we're going to have a lot of students and teachers in quarantine this week. :p Happy New Year!
The Gatsby reference 😂. It’s one symbol we can be sure is legit because the narrator actually explains it. Sometimes the blue curtain is just a freakin curtain. 😂
First - let me say that I find the knot in your tie here rather interesting. It looks complicated. Also really beautiful. Second, I found you last week when your reaction to PTX "Daft Punk" came up in my feed and I found that I really loved the way you throw yourself into it. Plus, I've been hoovering up every Voiceplay reaction I could find lately, as well, and you've done several that I really enjoyed. But at the base of things, I'm a Pentaholic and to be honest I was a little appalled when you remembered your younger self dissing them as "too pop." Harumph. However, you have recanted and redeemed yourself (insert "just joking" smirk here) so I've subscribed and look forward to seeing you blow your mind on a regular basis. It's hard to recommend things when I think nearly everything they do is flawless, even though they don't always sing stuff I personally like. I will say without any hesitation that there isn't a single bad take on their semi-recent "The Lucky Ones" album. Even the tracks that don't have any video other than their "visualizer" are superb. As you also seem to skew toward "fun" stuff, let me point you at Scott and MItch's side project called "Superfruit," which unfortunately they stopped doing in early 2018. It started with vlogs of the two of them just doing silly stuff, but it concluded with a full 16-track album called "Future Friends" that is just flat out MIND-BOGGLINGLY good. There's not a single video that I can't push at you crying out "Please! Go! Watch this!" Start with GUY.EXE which is, basically, a gay Dr. Frankenstein's lab. And both musically fabulous AND funny as hell.
1. Covering up the screen/closing one's eyes really does make a difference and makes one note so much more 👍 - I think I'll have to do that more often so my brain doesn’t get overwhelmed by trying to process the level of detail in their medleys both visually and sound-wise simultaneously. 2. Calling Geoff's voice caramel is not at all a weird analogy - or if it is, then you are not alone in thinking that way 😊
Loved that video! Hang in there! You seems to be about 2-3 days behind me (is everyone sick?!) so you should begin to feel better soon. I wish you a happy new year and a speedy recovery.
So, Geoff is doing the background during poor unfortunate souls but it is typically Eli who takes over for the bass line for live shows. He apparently has a pretty low range. And I think of Geoff more like Taffy it is smooth like pulling taffy but it is strong.
I just got back from Disney World and I watched this song like 5 times after going on the Journey of the Little Mermaid because I just kept thinking about their version. 😅
Love your analysis of these songs. You really help me try to follow the background more and catch things I normally wouldn’t. I’d love for you to analyze Pentatonix’s recent Ellen show performance if I just Called to Say I Love You, if you’re ok with that. Also hope you get well soon. I’m getting over a very bad post nasa drip myself so I raise my cup of hot water with honey and lemon to you. Cheers!
LOVE this song medley! Thanks for the recommendation to not watch them - the acting is so distractingly awesome that I miss a LOT of the amazing singing parts.
The slide Geoff sang at the end of poor unfortunate souls is actually D5-D1. Geoff is a beast.

Wow, that’s an incredible observation!
It's "Beluga sevruga. Come winds of the Caspian Sea. Larynxus glossitis et max laryngitis. La voce to me."
not to be pedantic but none of those are arabic countries; they're muslim majority countries
(edit to clarify, it would be more accurate to say that that was inspired by middle eastern/indian musical structures because music theory from over here is completely different than in the west and follows something called "maqams" instead of standard scales that are found in western music theory)

Oooh, never noticed that before! Now I can't stop laughing XD
That's "J. Snail" chipmunk- singing "Know how to wail here"
As far as I remember, Sebastian starts out on his own on "Kiss the girl". But even if he doesn't, the joining animals emphasize the assistance he needs to convince the reluctant prince.

Really enjoyed this reaction, this is one of my favourite Voiceplay medleys. I hope you feel better soon! 💚

The outro from you was the best part for me. You made my day. Now I have a wide grin on my face. Keep up your amazing work and get well soon.

OH MY GOD I WAS SO WAITING FOR YOU TO DO THIS ONE!!!!!! *Cough* sorry. Got exited. Didn't watch yet but I am so excited
34:39 makes me laugh! "Now I have to go edit it, *fake crys then laughs*

Sorry you’re starting the year with a cold! Hope otherwise you have a wonderful New Year, and I’m looking forward to more of your Voiceplay reactions!
Male Ursula is definitely my new...thing...

Poor Austin and Rob will feel left out.
That little thing you heard was J. None as a snail in the video saying "each little snail here, know how to wail here, WOOOOO!" in "Under the sea"
I think J Snail is singing something just before that too.
@@DravenGal yes, I think he sang a little of the song before that
Sorry your sick, may you have a speedy recovery.
I always listen to new releases with eyes closed, then rewatch to see the. Video.
I really love your reactions, and I personally think that this medley and the Moana Medly videos are two of the best things on the internet. Thank you for sharing your passion and delight, you really made my day!

The first song is titled Fathoms Below
hope you’re feeling better soon ❤️🏴

Loved this video! Hope everyone has a happy and a successful new year! Much love to everyone! ❤️🥰🎼🎤🥕
Great video, Happy New Year and hope you get better soon
Loved that video!
Hang in there! You seems to be about 2-3 days behind me (is everyone sick?!) so you should begin to feel better soon. I wish you a happy new year and a speedy recovery.
i was waiting for this!
Dude, I'm down to be here for hours! 🤣🤣 When you feel better, maybe. ~
Long live the Christmas Shrimp! Those are FABULOUS!
Thank you for doing this, but I feel bad for you trying to do this while sick.
Your confusion about the JNone snail had be rolling.

You're not misrepresenting percussion, we hit what we're told to hit
I love watching your video analysis because of how detailed and simplified you you make it. Could you do a video about Homefree’s thinking out loud.
I enjoyed your reaction. And, yes, the original has very animals home in to echo Sebastian. Thanks
Eli is supposed to be Scuttle in the beginning of "Kiss the girl"
I have to mention the fancy tie knot. Love it!
If you want to hear some absolutely crazy beatboxing you should watch the beatboxing competitions and react to those they’re insane
Caffeine does nothing good for your congestion. What you need chicken broth. Loved you review, as usual. 🌺 Have a nap now. 😊
25:25 might be the most impressive 15 seconds in VoicePlay history.
I just got back from Disney World and I watched this song like 5 times after going on the Journey of the Little Mermaid because I just kept thinking about their version. 😅
Fathoms Below! A great Disney intro scene!
The ol' cough medicine and herbal tea diet, eh?
Oh yes... I also remember the days when I didn't have time to be sick.
Cheers!
At 25:11, it just reminded me of how imagine dragons does something like that.
Yeess, shoutout to Sideways :3 :D :D :D
15:57 OMG HE NNED SOME MILK!!! 😅
Perhaps use "foundation" instead of "base" in certain cases?
Good thinking!
How THE FUCK do you make that knot. Necktie tutorial needed
Sweety, you really need to see the video. It's so fun.
He has seen the video. He just blocks the screens for ones he has already seen so he can better analyze the audio without distractions.
I noticed you haven't done a reaction or analysis to the Moana Medley yet
You should check out Geoff’s new song. It just came out today warning bring tissues
Carmel is right, btw.
LOVE this song medley! Thanks for the recommendation to not watch them - the acting is so distractingly awesome that I miss a LOT of the amazing singing parts.
Wait. Why can't you see the video?
He’s seen it before. He’s hiding it so he can focus solely on the sounds without the distraction of the video.
First
