- Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien OBE (16 April 1939 - 2 March 1999), professionally known as Dusty Springfield, was an English pop singer and record producer whose career extended from the late 1950s to the 1990s. With her distinctive mezzo-soprano sound, she was an important singer of blue-eyed soul and at her peak was one of the most successful British female performers, with six top 20 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen on the UK Singles Chart from 1963 to 1989. She is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and UK Music Hall of Fame. International polls have named Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time. Her image, supported by a peroxide blonde bouffant hairstyle, evening gowns, and heavy make-up, as well as her flamboyant performances, made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties.
This performance was part of a Dutch tv-special 'Just Dusty' first broadcast by TROS tv on 4 February 1971.

I think this is the most beautiful love song ever. I love music and have so many favourites, but this one as a love song goes so deep.

My mum and dad bought this single when it was released, and at the age of 7, I absolutely loved it. Still her finest hour for me.
It started with Wishin' and Hopin' for me, and then she just got better and better. Her voice and delivery were influenced by American soul, but she was also completely unique. Best pop singer of her generation!
It was written about my mother by Clive Westlake. They were engaged but never married. I never knew he wrote the song about her, knew they had dated, and she told me as she was dying.

This song has three incredible moods: tender, sultry, dramatic. She was so good at getting into every aspect of a song. Genius level interpretation. There was nobody like Dusty.
Such a dreamy song delivered exquisitely by Dusty and her uniquely mellifluous voice - so sensual, soulful and uplifting. And there is something else about I Close my Eyes that I just can't put my finger on - why is it so incredibly hard to sing....even in the privacy of my own bedroom?! Only Dusty could manage those beautifully nuanced sweeps so effortlessly. If I want to feel happy or sad or just emotional, I can bask in the peerless allure of her voice and let it carry me away to wherever the mood takes me. A kind of bliss.

Don't know much about Dusty Springfield but that she was known as a very very independent woman and artist... That once she Sang acompanied by Buddy Rich's 🥁 Band for a few presentations in a club, AND that she had a strong character, not letting anyone put her down.... Elton John has said she's His favorite singer... That says a Lot ❤

Normally I turn down the sound when watching on YT as I use headphones but I never do it when playing Dusty. She should be played at full volume and sod the possible damage caused as it is worth it for this classic diva. Not to be confused with the modern interpretation of the word as Dusty deserves the title.
I maybe biased as after the night with my first love when I got back from class I put on the greatest hits CD and had this song on repeat.
