    I found a few pieces of laser cut 1/4" thick 304L stainless in one of my scrap buckets so I am using it for a lap joint video.
    Stainless steel requires less amperage than carbon steels so even for 1/4" thickness, I only used 95-105 amps.
    In fact, I was plugged in to a 115volt circuit for this video using a primeweld 325

    Oh I love welding stainless. So long as everything is clean and you got your gas sorted out… butter. It’s just so satisfying.

    Interesting amp setting. I always thought stainless was around 25A to 35A per mm, Jody's works out at around 16A/mm with mild being +10%.

    Great content Jody, as always, for the newer welders, can you suggest a rule or metric in selecting filler wire (stainless but other metals would be appreciated).

    2:57 I cant really speak too much on Ceriated electrodes on the whole, but I do know this.... on large diameter pipe where big amperages are required, they deteriorate very quickly. Even without dipping it accidentally in the puddle, the tip gets very raggedy, very fast.

    ...Sanitary for home beer brewing pots too... some day I hope. Thanks for the past few years of instructional videos!
    QUESTION, please: For the 1/4" 304 SS only, is there ever a need to change frequency or wave shape? Specifically, can I get by doing home 3/16" sanitary welds with a stick welder, TIG torch, back purged 100% argon (and one of your TIG fingers, of course)??

      I've done some 316, though most of my welding has been 304. I can't say I've noticed any difference. Just use 316 filler rod and all the same practices that are good for 304. Maybe I've missed something?

    • @tweake7175

      I can't say I've noticed much difference. I do a fair bit of 304 tube to 316 fittings.

    I'm a certified welder and have been doing sanitary stainless steel welding in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, aerospace and chemical industries for 30 years, my welds are perfect...always...they have to be, people's lives and health are on the line, and I don't walk the cup. Walking the cup is fine for people who are learning to weld or for hobbyists, but don't get trapped by it if welding is going to be a career choice, expand your knowledge, free hand is the way to go in all circumstances. When you are in a confined area and hardly have enough room to ram your helmet in that space, barely able to move your hands, walking the cup is not an option. When you have to mirror weld because the joint is not visible, attempting to walk the cup is not a good choice, tying yourself into a knot in the rafters trying to get to finish that last pipe joint is not a cup walking situation. Jody, you are obviously very talented, I too, have taught people how to weld, skilled trades people are hard to find, and from one professional to another, it's up to people like us to help newcomers to our field consider this as a future career. Keep up the good work, your videos are very educational. Knowledge is the key to success. Cheers!

      This is a very … intriguing comment and statement/s made.
      Not disagreeing with what’s been said, but more asking the question of weld methods all have their time and place.?
      And saying that “walking the cup” is great for hobbyist is mind blowing to me. We must hang around different people claiming to weld as a hobby, coz I don’t know all to many of them my side that can just “walk the cup” like it’s something you just do when tig welding. Ha

    Does not purging the backside affect the strength of a weld? Like on a stainless exhaust system?

    • @chrisdaniel1339
      @chrisdaniel1339 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jacobjames1171 It is. I have an idea percolating in my brain and using this material is a big part of it. Super duplex stainless steels are significantly more corrosion resistant (PREN) than even 316L so they are well suited for inhospitable environments.
