My main guitar is a Silver Sky, and i absolutely love it. I have been through quite alot of strats throughout my guitar journey, and once got to try an original 1962 strat. Since then, everytime i try a strat i subconciously compare it to that glorious '62 strat, and nothing ever came close, untill i tried the silver sky. Mine, is the best guitar i've played, that wasn't dumb-money

Fender has really watered down the strat by having so many different models that play so differently and all over the place. I really like the neck on the Silver Sky as it's nice and chunky like my Peavey Predator.

I'm in the same boat, but on a budget. Tried several US strats before buying, after 30 years of not playing (had a US Strat back then). Ended up with a Silver Sky SE, because it was more of a strat than any of the US Players i tried, atleast soundwise. And the QC/finish is leagues better on an Indonesian PRS than a US Player ..

I am a HUGE Mayer fan as well, and have always loved the feel and sound from a good Strat. I got my Silver Sky about 6 months ago after playing a friend's and falling in love with it. Obviously it is very "Straty", it feels like the best Strat-style guitar I've ever played. But it is more nuanced than that. The Silver Sky is not just a straight-up Strat copy, it has it's own feel and sound to it that you aren't going to find in just any Strat. It really is it's own thing, and it does that "thing" very well!

Literally every guitar maker but Gibson builds a Strat or S type guitar so why not the brilliant Paul Reed Smith? The silver sky being a new take on an older classic concept allows players who found the faults in Leo’s original design to get certain things fixed while other classic features remained! Its brilliance as in instrument is in what features were kept versus which ones were updated lol! With the quality levels of every aspect of guitars being made today, the differences between one brand and another, has become so subtle, that it is literally down to personal taste, playing style and size of hands (when it comes to necks at least on that last point). I watch Mike's videos and tons of other reviewers channels, as I love hearing and seeing guitars old and new. I spent most of my playing career with one guitar for 30 years, plus a few backups. I've now got a few strats and mid range strat style guitars (plus too many humbucker beasts to mention) but I still want to try out a Silver Sky because whenever I have heard it being played it does seem to have a subtle but distinctive voice.
However, all of my strats have their own feel and sound so I wonder if I'm just suffering from GAS and John Mayer admiration in wanting one of them? I've got so close to buying one and then stopped myself because... well, how many strats does a guy at the end of his career seriously need?
So, I've decided that "if" I decide I want another Strat, I will buy a Silver Sky, because I trust PRS to deliver a quality instrument and I get the spidey-sense tingle that I would love playing it.
In my small city I don't know anyone who owns one that I could borrow for a few nights and trying one out in a guitar store sucks as I want to be able to relax and play through my own rig to make a judgement call. So... it'll probably be mail order or impulse buy at some point. I know I don't "need" another strat, but if I was starting out today would I choose the PRS "Strat" over the Fender? Ya know, I think I just might 😎
PS: Sorry for long ramble - just watching and listening to Mike in this video really got me thinking about it again and browsing guitar stores online.
Peace out and enjoy whatever guitar you love and cherish 👍

One of the biggest differences I’ve noticed between the best guitars I own and the others is that the best ones STAY the best ones.
That sounds weird but my Fender American professional Strat was amazing for the first year that I had it. And then the neck started settling and fret ends started to stick out and this and that and w lot of work has gone into it over the years to the point where it doesn’t have the same magic it did back in 2017.
I’ve had my Silver Sky for nearly four years and have played the snot out of it and it is still every bit as magical of a guitar as it was on day one. It’s as stable as steel and incredible to play. Nothing against Fender, but my Silver Sky is worth every penny

Mike, I can truthfully attest that when the SS first came out I was apprehensive on trying it out and giving it a chance. When I finally did in 2019 however, I was hooked. It has since become truly an obsession. Fast forward to 2023 and I have 3 (Hello, I have a problem).
The Silver Sky, for me, became the benchmark to which all other single coil guitars are judged against. And to be objective, there are several boutique makers or manufacturers aside from PRS who knock it out of the park in their own way. For me though, this is the 3 single coil guitar I’ve always wanted. THE sound profile is there (I’ve found differences between Rosewood and Maple, each offer different experiences in sound and feel. Gun to my head I’m taking Maple. I think much attention goes to Rosewood which I also love, but the Maple has just got something else going on). THE feel is there. THE vibe is there. THAT feeling of owning something special, mystic, and unique yet incredibly familiar is there!
I’ve watched that same live stream from Mayer featured in your video probably 30+ times no lie. I’ve watched countless reviews, interviews of PRS or anything to glean more info on this instrument. Why? I feel that this instrument has shaken the market place and has altered the status quo. That makes me want to learn more about it. Whether one feels like this instrument is unique take on an iconic design or an unimaginative strat copy with the wrong headstock is subjective to each individual player and their respective opinion. Not here to change your mind, that’s your journey. But what isn’t subjective is the fact the PRS and JM brought to market a model that competes with instruments 1 -2.5x+ the price. And this is good for us as consumers. While not cheap by any stretch, it is however more attainable financially and arguably by availability than the Mario Martin, Suhr, Fender Custom Shop, Anderson, Exotic, etc. ‘s of the world. It has been a level set to the industry. And players get that much closer to having incredible gear more accessible to them.
Anyway, TL;DR: I have 3, I’m obsessed, and so stoked you have one! Enjoy the journey bud!

Hey Mike, so back to John Mayer, I just can't stand his music and arrogance, BB King almost walked out on him once because he was starting to cross a line you don't cross, but who am I, just an unknown pro musician who does studio work and all I can get. John Mayer was 14 when I recorded my first album (for another band) I recorded all the guitar tracks and the band was not good at all. I prefer Joe B. all the way, even my playing is very similar to Joe's but I got it from Gary Moore, not Joe. Gary Clark Jr is a very good songwriter but an average guitarist. I once heard this statement "You cannot be an exceptional guitarist and an exceptional songwriter at the same time." Kudos on the guitar Mike. But I have to say the Silver Sky is one of those guitars that just evokes two emotions, you either love it to death, or cannot stand it. I fall in the latter category. I was excited to try both the American made SS and the SEs. I got to try both and I have to tell you, they just both felt sterile. Like someone took a Strat an sucked all the mojo out of it.
I cannot explain what it is either. Just like you I played BOTH of them through a Princeton and there was no spark. Its like I was chatting up the hottest girl around and felt like "Eh. Lets go talk to one of those Strats over there..." >:) So its not like a Popeyes Chicken Sandwich to me...its more like a Mayo sandwich, kinda bland with no spice.
Heres the thing. I played an SE and that Cherry Fender Players Plus Strat you have and I walked out with the Player Plus. I had my hands on a Roxy Pink and I left with an old Fender American Standard. And I LIKE John Mayer. I thought the video release for the SE was KILLER. There is just something about that guitar that puts me off. Its not an "I dont like PRS" thing either because I have a 2006 Swamp Ash Special that I play the hell out of. I honestly think Paul and John just got TOO precious with that guitar. Strats are MEANT to be beat up and played. I mean look at the Black 1 for crying out loud. With the Silver Sky(Especially the Nebula and Lunar Ice)they look more like they should be hanging in a case never to be touched by human hands. They're more like art pieces than guitars.
But I guess thats why I dont own a Two Rock or a Dumble either, I am not that kind of player. Some people probably think playing a SS through a Two Rock is the idea of tone heaven. I will always chose the Princeton RI and a really nice Fender Strat(AVII 61, Clapton, KWS Signature or even the Player Plus Cherry). I will pretty much bet anything if you put ANY of those guitars in John Mayers hands and plugged him into a Princeton RI he would STILL sound like John Mayer. Thats the kicker here. Its not about the guitar. Its about the player.
To me your playing sounds just as AWESOME using your Player Plus....as it did in this video playing the Silver Sky! I cannot say that. The SS made me feel wooden and uninspired while playing it. Grab that Cherry and everything came back to life.

I brought my 2005 Classic Series 50s MIM Stratocaster to the store to A/B the SE and mine. The SE was beautiful and played nice, but I get what you are saying. I did feel my strat just had that soul to it.

I can’t believe you compared the guitars to chicken sandwiches.. and I completely understood what you meant. GREAT analogy, and love the breakdown.

So to sum it all up, just get this man a chicken sandwich 😏. And also it doesn't matter if its a Strat its a damn good guitar(you'll see him lean towards playing this guitar more then his others because it plays/feels like a dream watch)

I got one! I first had a Fender Strat Original 60s which got cosmetically damaged in shipping - I still tried it out. Later, before I sent it back, I tried a SS at a local guitar shop and the tone just blew me away! I knew it was the one and I took it home that day, and returned the Fender.

Aight here’s my $2 (adjusted for inflation). Strats sound better. PRS has the Ibanez problem which is: beautiful guitar, I wanna love it, but the tone lacks soul. Too round in my opinion. All PRS are too round. All Ibanez sound like a video game guitar. Robotic or something. Only hot takes here

I think I appreciate the guitar for what it is, why it was created and who it is aimed at. Does it sound good? Yes. Does it look good? Yes.
Will I buy one? The cacophony of Mayer fanboys waxing lyrical about how much closer they can get to THE MAYER TONE just turns me off. Too much "Gayer for Mayer" artist association for my money.
PS - no issues with gay people; just using a term popularised by the Andertons folks.

If it ain't Hello Kitty, it shouldn't be painted pink!! Gospel truth...lolz, jkjk, to be completely honest, there was a day not long ago I thought I didn't like any gold top guitars, then I saw a paisley-laiden sparkle gold strat with a black burst, and omg, it probably sounds hoakey, but motherf***** it was beautiful! Context is everything! Gold and pink have been pretty meh for me in my guitar journey, glad you like the pink tho :) but I'm sure one day I'll see an exceptional pink guitar i actually like. Will I buy it? Mmm, I need a purple, a green, a yellow, red, white and silverbust guitar first to scratch all my color choice itches before I go pink...I only have orangeish bursts, black, a black and gray burst, and a blue bass. I need more color options for my tones!!! Hehe...😂

Bruh I see you in this channel as being like the “fine wine” of guitar critics. Call it cliché in whichever way you choose, but say like one of the top food critics in a 3 star restaurant in France. How their insight and opinion inspires growth or perhaps an accurate point of view for noticeable change in gear/equipment etc for the general public. This being said you’re definitely setting the bar for a new type of media influence that can grow into a fresh career when done properly. Keep tryin fine wines an giving us your time. Its highly appreciated.

Totally agree. What I really appreciate about Mike is that he always declares his taste and what he gravitates towards so that you can always take his opinions within the right context. That sort of transparency is not only a great way to connect to your audience, but also allows a consumer to make a more informed decision.

Oh, it’s a Strat, all right. Give me a break. Just because Mayer gave it his ‘blessing’ and farted on it doesn’t make it ‘its own thing’ in any way, shape, or form.

I just can’t get past the bird inlays on PRS guitars. I really dislike those inlays and the Tony the Tiger stripped Maple Tops. I’ll always be a Gibson and Fender Custom Shop guy. If you want to play the best S or T style guitar you’ll ever try, get a high end LSL Instruments Strat or Tele.
