    I totally appreciate & agree with your view about 'breeding up' your goats. Long ago our 1st girls came from an auction & after years of 'up'breeding my daughter took championships in many shows. When she started her own commercial goat dairy, her best milkers were from the herd we built together. Anyone who is actively working toward improving their herd does NOT have 'garbage' goats. It's all a work in progress!! God bless!
    Maaika just bought an entire herd of purebred Saanens to go into her dairy. They are gorgeous!! And I just purchased an amazing purebred Lamancha buckling from champion parents. Proof that we are still 'breeding up'!! Good luck in the show Heather! Sounds like a perfect opportunity to get good feedback on your goats!!

    As a dog groomer, just a tip, going against the hair growth, you clip 2 lenghr shorter. So far example a 4 with the grain is 9.5mm but against the grain its a 3.2mm much shorter . BUT working against the grain, do all of the goat that way so you avoid " lines" in the coat❤

    My herd of 7 (Nigerian dwarfs) is horned and unregistered. The start of my herd came from a breeder who originally had all registered goats but did not keep up on the paperwork. I think a lot of fancy goat people would call my goats garbage too, but I don’t see them that way at all. They provide me milk and eat up all the brush on our land. In the future I may buy registered goats because I think it would be amazing to see the lineage and work to better my girls qualities but right now they serve their purpose and I love them!

    I personally have no interest in raising goats but I have been so impressed by you. I really admire how intelligent you are and how you are ableble to articulate your ideas and beliefs. I could not agree more with you about the challenge and the satisfaction of creating something exceptional from less. The idea of being able to develop an exceptional herd by your own hands and with your own hard work is a great achievement. Buying a fancy goat and winning prizes is for the sake of winning prizes. Taking your ordinary goats and refining their qualities through hard work, intelligence and loving care of them is for the sake of becoming a master at your art. I love to see how much you love them. It shines through.

    Garbage goat?!? Seriously? The audacity lol. Your goats have purpose and they do very well at it. That is like the same mentality as buying a 250,000 sports car because it's fast, parking it in a garage and saying "yeah but look how perfect it is". I love your goats. You are doing an amazing thing with your breeding for parasite resistance and I think there is a lot of value in that.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      What's funny is if I sold the "garbage goat" people would poop on that new owner who's proud of their first goat. It's a cycle that needs to stop. Breeding up is possible. The goat world needs more breeders that built herds from "nothing" with their own skill and knowledge. We have to start somewhere!

    • @daughterofmyabba

      @SageandStoneHomestead I completely agree! We've built our herd from them and we have had good parasite resistance and super yummy milk. I'm not overly concerned with rump angles and such, a good milkable udder and a healthy goat are what I'm after. In fact my "mutt" goats are some of my best milkers 😅

    Wow, people really are that derogatory about your goats? How rude! It's great hearing that the B complex sorted out the bitter milk issue. That will be some vital point-of-reference information now for other milk goat owners. I totally appreciate the merits of an 'introvert's show'. I would have so been up for all that instead of having to get up at 4.30am to trek my horses to a show full of people, spend all day there, and the rest. I do miss it sometimes, and socialising with the friends we made, but these days, I totally see the appeal of 'showing from home'.

    I think the virtual show sounds like a fabulous idea (introvert that I am aside, haha) exactly for the reasons you mentioned, getting feedback from a 3rd party who is trained, etc. Being able to look at your own herd with some input from different eyes and being able to take their assessment into account when making decisions. Super valuable to get perspectives when working on your own herd with certain characteristics (nice hand milking, good volume, parasite resistant, etc) that you want for your herd. I bet they will love the shorter hair for the heat, they look so sleek and shiny too - gorgeous! Elara's fight dance is cute, looks like even with some heirarchy balancing that Foxy is blending in with the herd nicely. So awesome that the cobalt and B12 is helping with Talia and Breezy's milk, such good info for others who may encounter same situation.

    I think the virtual show is a fabulous idea, not just for getting feedback on the show-quality of your goats, but also in being able to stay on the farm, you are avoiding the stresses (of travel and the show atmosphere) on the goats as well as avoiding the potential for bringing in vectors from outside the farm onto the farm. Seeing Tori and Foxy next to each other, they appear pretty similar in size - funny how THEY'RE not buddies yet. I got lots of giggles in watching Elara dance and play with Foxy, though - I absolutely would get NO work done if I had this happening right outside my house. LOL

    We have some registries here (NL/EU) that will come on site to judge (sheep, but also horses that i know of), but this is an interesting option when distances are much larger.
    On the foto making though : keep contrast in mind. So dark goat + dark background + dark clothed human + shade = difficult to make out shape of goat problem.
    White sheet or some such to present dark animals in front (and light ish color for you) makes it much easier to judge the animal properly (and in reverse for light goats, patterns are bit more tricky).

      Lamanchas vary from about 120lbs to over 200lbs!! Some breeders breed them bigger while others tend to stay on the smaller side of things. My Nigerian buck is big so his offspring are big. Tizzy is over 80 lbs right now, pushing 100. We have another F1 mini lamancha that is barely 45 lbs :)

    Is there a cost to MDGA for membership? I have dual registration for most of my goats through ADGA and AGS. I am not pleased with ADGA, however. Too expensive! I think your goats are beautiful. You do an amazing job caring for them. Our babies this year are struggling. I have had two put down the last two days. And they ALL have been fighting parasites and anemia. NEVER have I in all my years of goats had such a problem.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes it's an annual fee much like the other registries! I forget what it was... maybe $25? The goats have to have at least one registered parent from one of the other registries to be recorded grade.

    I'll bet that a lot of the reason behind your family's shift to homesteading is self-actualisation, which is something nearly impossible to get working in the corporate world. 'Garbage goats' or not, just buying in some random goat to achieve some other person's idea of 'good' would run contrary to the whole point of homesteading. Being able to create and resolve and evolve right on your own doorstep, every single day, is an incredible experience, and something that many people in cities and suburbs rarely get to experience.
    I think too many get caught up in wanting to achieve the ends (which is what our corporatist world is all about), forgetting the joy in the journey. Your 'garbage goats' have great lives, and having them enables you and your family to have great lives too. Anyone who thinks goat shopping is the best way to achieve happiness and self-actualisation might be better suited for a job at the mall.

    Hi, just wondering how you get on with their feet, given that your ground is wet. We're on very wet ground too, and while three of our goats (Saanen mother and two kids) are fine and have good feet, the other two (mother and daughter, Saanen Nubian cross, purchased as adults) have terrible feet. We'll never be able to breed those two. Do you have to do much trimming, etc?

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Tizzy's feet (in this video) were trimmed last in March. I try to get them every 2 months. I will say genetics play a massive role in how they do on their feet! We only ever had a hint of hoof rot one time, and it was right after we got our first goats. Naylor's Hoof N Heal was a lifesaver for that situation, and you can also look into supplementing with zinc to build a strong hoof wall! ♥
