    Al Bean -- favorite astronaut. Except for those days when it's John Young. Still, FtEttM is one of my favorite pieces of media about the space program.

    These days you can't seem to shake a dead cat in a historical (or AU historical) drama without it smacking Saul Rubinek.
    No sleight against him, he and Ronny Cox are my two most precious 'Hey it's that guy!' guys... Probably not a coincidence that one of my earliest experiences with both were on TNG and SG-1.

    There's no air, and it's not weight, it's mass that matters.
    I do want to buy that Dr. Seuss book though.

    I find this series both fascinating and fluffy. Fascinating for the bits of real history I'm getting in the review, fluffy for the lack of any actual happenings in the actual series because it's a what if scenario.

      Lack of happenings? Are you crazy. Plenty has happened. Look where we are from the start of S1 to S4

    From what I understand, debating if Apollo 10 would land on the moon is kind of funny considering they couldn't land on the moon. They didn't have enough fuel to do it, and this was intentional so that the astronauts wouldn't be tempted to go rogue land anyway.

    • @noblehelium3794
      @noblehelium3794 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also presumably because they'd have to pack more fuel to carry the fuel, as Chuck would point out.

      Interestingly only the ascent stage was shorted. It had 981 lbs of ascent fuel to Eagle's 2,020. More importantly its ascent engine was not the final version, and only had 1,650 lbs of thrust to Eagle's 3,218. It needed to be underpowered since Snoopy would be moving fast when it aborted, not slowed all the way down for a landing approach, Eagle's ascent engine would complete the burn too quickly for the mission plan.
      The descent stage engines were the same, and Snoopy had 17,741 lbs of descent fuel to Eagle's 17,921. Snoopy itself was slightly heavier but the reduced fuel load and lack of surface gear meant the total mass was actually lower so this was plenty to land.
      So Snoopy could have landed, but would have barely been able to lift back off and would be doomed to crash a couple hundred miles downrange when they tried. Which is more grim than just making sure the astronauts physically couldn't go rogue. They *could* go rogue and land... But they had to *really* mean it because they were going to be staying there.

    For the first two seasons Karen Baldwin seemed to exist solely to make the audience as uncomfortable as possible, to the point I missed Marie from Breaking Bad. Thankfully they fix a lot of that in season 3.

      @@remimaloney2028 that’s fair in some cases. I don’t want to give spoilers to people who haven’t gotten into the show yet, but her subplot at the end of the second season was just… no.

    The reason why the NASA pronunciation of Gemini is Gem-in-ee over Gem-en-eye is actually because of the Southern US dialect. As most of the Southern States worked on Gemini project rather than have two different ways to say it NASA opted for one to avoid confusion. I only found this out on the following documentary th-cam.com/video/bevXt1v-MGk/w-d-xo.html

    I had a hard time watching this episode of the show. Van Braun was quite open about how he joined the SS, he explained his history on TV talk shows, so this "weren't you a Nazi" thing congressional hearing is the least impressive gocha of all time. I got the impression the show had an agenda, it wanted to shame and humiliate Van Braun because that didn't happen in real life and it didn't do it's research to get this moment of catharsis.

      @@spectre111 Any time you see a crazy Nazi scientist working for the US in a parody tv show, movie or even on the X-files, it's a reference to Von Braun, he's been the punching bag of the media for decades. By not accurately portraying the situation, For All Mankind joins the ranks of Dr. Strangelove.

    "Gordo" being a "made up" character is, uh... Let's be real. He's Gordo Cooper. They didn't even change his name.
    A kind of character assassination of Gordo Cooper.

    • @Hevach
      @Hevach ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Cooper was a notorious womanizer and Slayton and Sheperd felt he was an embarrassment to the orogram. He later screwed his career up with poor performance off flight, and had a fairly public mental break that's still a popular topic of conversation with UFO theorists and moon landing deniers.
      Stevens is in many ways an improvement.
