    When I was an electronics apprentice, (45 years ago), we used to build our bedroom stereo amplifiers using LM380's from work (!). It was soon discovered that they worked wonderfully in a bridge configuration into 8 Ohms, but this caused my father to get cross too often. LM386 pre-amp/tone controls, LM380 PA.

      This sounds really cool. I've been considering trying to make a bridge coupled lm386 as a guitar amp, but now that I have some 380's, I might go for that instead.

      It is not the owners it is their publishers and the payment/search systems. You have 3 main publishers :BMI,Ascap,Sesac who use advertising intelligence companies such as Tunesat , Numerator,BMAT, TRQK to detect any audio from their composers. It is all computerized and very accurate. Think of it as web crawling for music. Composers do not have a choice because in order to be paid you have to have a publisher to receive publishing royalties. So it is either play along or sacrifice 35 years of music lessons, learning to play 11 different instruments, learning to mix and master music,buying thousands of dollars of music gear, recording gear, paying for health,dental and eye insurance and very expensive copyright fees etc. Most composers make a very modest income. And on top of all that since the internet people feel that all music is free. If I steal a Taylor Swift CD at a shop I am arrested. If you steal my music on the internet I am the bad guy for trying to make a living. She can afford it. Most composers can't. So it is kind of backwards thinking.Their are tons of composers who do offer music for free and hundreds of websites that do so also. I have never turned down any request for someone to use my music for TH-cam videos. Asking allows you to use it legally and for me to place an exemption so you do not get flagged. All I and most composers ask for is the name of the composer as a credit. Music by_____. So easy!!!
      Hopefully I cleared this up!!

    I couldn't resist to build the internal circuit of the LM380 out of discrete transistors. And I found it was flawed in that the top output transistor needed an NPN before it connected as darlington, and an additional diode in the vbe multiplier.
    After that, the amplifier worked wonderfully at 12V. More supply and it started to need biasing adjustment because the quiescent current ran up too much.
    The external circuitry I used your configuration for the IC version.
    All transistors I used were BC337-16, BC327-25 and the power outputs MJD44H11.

    A lot of the lower end broadcast mixing consoles used the LM380’s for headphone drivers! Noisy!

  • @johncoops6897
    @johncoops6897 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the 1970's I built a 2x100W rack mount power amp (2n3055/2n2955 outputs) and added 2 x LM380s to drive a separate headphone output. This allowed the headphone volume to be separate from the main amp volume. For heatsinking, I used quite large copper plates as "wings" off both sides of the centre pins, and they would drive the 'phones at good volume if necessary.

    If a resistor is connected between the input of an amplifier and ground, what's the actual function of it ?
    Sometimes I see a resistor connected across the Input pin and ground after the potentiometer and input capacitor, sometimes after the potentiometer only. Some amplifier chips like lm386, tba820 circuits that have input capacitor connected before the potentiometer and a resistor connected across the Input pin and ground and so on..
    2. Secondly, some circuit diagrams suggests a resistor be connected in series before the potentiometer acting as input impedance but some have the resistor connected across the Input pin and ground after the potentiometer. What's the difference between these ?

    I made this circuit and have made quite a few LM 386 circuits as well. I have found little to no difference in volume when using 12 volts or 22v in the case of the LM380. Even with the LM386 4 at 18 v not much more by way of volume than at 9 or 12. I am using a couple different power supplies. Both put out up to 5A. One up to 30v and the other up to 24Vv. Am I doing something wrong or is this typical ? Sometimes their seems to be more punch but not much more volume. I try with all different sized 4 and 8 ohm speakers. From 5" to 15". Mostly high end 8",12" and 15" speakers. Mostly using with guitar input which I am guessing impedance is a big factor. But even running music or Arduino musical instruments, such as synths and drum machines, as source input through the circuits ,not finding the expected volume increase with more voltage. If anyone has an explanation it would be greatly appreciated!!

    That oscillation is almost certainly caused by powering the amplifier through long wires from your power supply. Put a capacitor across the supply at the circuit board end and it will disappear.

      There is a ceramic and electrolytic supply bypass capacitor right at the chip pins. This is instability of the output CFP.

    I have two questions -
    1. The input coupling capacitor is connected at input pin but if I connect potentiometer at input will I have to connect the capacitor before the potentiometer or after it ?
    2. The zobel network has the capacitor connected at the top and the resistor at bottom (ground) whereas in datasheet the resistor is connected at the top and capacitor at bottom. Will it make any difference ?

    Hi, do you have any experience with the DIP8 package of these? I mistakenly got those instead of the dip14, so I was wondering if you could squeeze the same power out of them if you throw on some heatsinks.

    • @JohnAudioTech
      @JohnAudioTech  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Without the heatsink pins and the smaller package, you would be stressing the chip to put out higher power of the larger one.

  • @commentsectionweissenheime2071
    @commentsectionweissenheime2071 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi, do you think it would help with the oscillation if you were to make the input filter cut off between 20 and 30kHz?

    • @JohnAudioTech
      @JohnAudioTech  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I doubt that would help. It is an instability of the chip design, probably the output stage. Using a series coil on the output should remove it. It is really too small to be of concern.

    I don't understand the complaints about the music issues. Is TH-cam running the scans to discover copyright violations, or the owners of the music ? I don't see how the owners would discover violations unless they sat down and listened to millions of hours of videos; and TH-cam simply wouldn't conduct such a scan because they have no interest for such a search. So, who's doing what and what's the objections. I agree that it seems like free advertising of their product . . . BUT it is their product and shouldn't they have the right to decide ? I'm truly curious . . . not trying to fight. Someone ?
