I had lots of crazy intestinal issues in China. I never ate street food. I went to the Chinese doctor and explained that I had never experienced anything like this in my body my whole life and I have lived all over the world even in some of the poorest countries. Chinese doctor told me that the problem was with ME and MY body rather then telling me the truth of what I was dealing with in China (gutter oil). Protecting Chinese face in front of western foreigner was more important than delivering honest medical care. Every day, I'm grateful to be out of China.

Im a plumber in Canada. Every commercial resteraunt sink has a grease interceptor installed under it that collects this oil to be properly disposed of. The stench that is released when we open them up to clean them out haunts my dreams....I can't even imagine the thought, of having this recycled oil used to prepare food that a human will consume. The rancidity of the oil and the concentrated metals and carcinogens from the frying process mean this stuff is probably more toxic to cook with than turpentine. unreal!

Yup we have them "Grease Traps" in Ireland as well.
Disgusting containers under the sink and near the large Wok stations.
A disposal company comes and disposed them now and again and the stench makes me wanna hurl.
      From a website:
"Stainless steel grease traps are essential components for managing and removing fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from wastewater in commercial kitchens. Located under or next to the sink, these traps capture FOG before they can enter the plumbing system and cause blockages and backups. Stainless steel is an ideal material for grease traps because of its durability, corrosion resistance, and ease of maintenance. Stainless steel grease traps are long-lasting, hygienic, and can withstand high temperatures and harsh chemicals."

My son worked for years in a well known sushi restaurant here in Québec. He was the manager and everything with food handling was done to the health code (this was in Québec) and the norms are severe with regular inspections. The French Canadian couple finally retired and sold their business to new Chinese immigrants and my son told me that as per the norms, all unused rice and fish from that day prepared in the early morning hours had to be disposed off. Well, he had the new owners tell him that he was not allowed to do that anymore, that all the fish and rice had to be reused for the following day. My son told them about the strict procincial norms, but they would not listen and he eventually quit. Since then, they were shut down by the health inspectors and finally sold the buisness back to a local person who reopened it and this time, everything is sanitary and healthy.

Glad to hear this story, because it helps debunk this TH-camr’s claim that the reason behind the practice is due to poor economy. Sounds to me like it’s a cultural phenomenon. I assume, just from stereotypes, that they have a higher tolerance for poor quality food, or they just don’t find it barbaric to eat like pigs do. I’m sure if we time traveled to medieval Europe we’d be equally grossed out by the food practices of the average people. I guess China just hasn’t shaken off the 13th century yet.

I learned long ago not to bother with waste cooking oil from Chinese restaurants. The oil from Chinese restaurants is so over used (burned) that you can't even make decent biodiesel from it. I was contracted by a Chinese couple to help them in their restaurant. My first day I cleaned the entire kitchen. Top to bottom. I cleaned the grease trap in the floor and unclogged the grease collector. I scraped grease off gas’s lines like it was cheese. I swept up flower that was yellow and cheese clumps. Oh yes they had mice.
My job was to prepare pizza. But I saw the need to clean up everything before I could do anything.
They told me that if I wanted to come back I could and they would pay me as an employee. They liked that I washed my hands every time I left out from behind the work station. As well as how detailed my cleaning was.
I worked for them for over 5 years. I got rid of the mice as best as I could. I fired all the lazy people when they made me the manager. I would only hire neat freaks who liked being in the restaurant business. I got a regular exterminator and got them up to proper code. They were old and being taken advantage of by Americans who wanted to get over on them.
They are like my aunt an uncle now. I learned then that you should be cleaning a kitchen top to bottom daily. No excuses.

@@flipppeh9426 Pagpag is the trash food that the poorest population (typically the ones living near dumpsites) of the Philippines had to scavenge to survive because they literally can't afford to spend money for food. This is different from China's case though because it's the last resort of the unfortunately starving populations of the Philippines so you won't encounter this if you have even a small amount of money to pay for food. I know a person who talks so highly about travelling to China, I tell them about the things that go on in China especially about gutter oil, they straight up refute it as being a very small 1 in a million problem in China and still continues to promote the idea that travelling to China is very safe. I tell them, you go, it’s your funeral.

I live on the East Coast us, and when I worked in restaurants we had multiple methods of collecting grease, and it was all supposed to end up in a large container in the back for recycling, I think into some sort of fuel. Really nasty stuff, but smaller groups will sometimes recycle this in-house for flavor purposes, but these people do it in a sanitary method! Can't imagine how desperate someone needs to be to go to these lengths to collect it..
I've known people who dispose of it right down the drain, but it's a really bad habit because it ruins the drains and drainage systems.

Even worse when you find out cheap clothes, toys made in China had chemicals and carcinogens on them.
They would sell you poison if they could make money off it. Regulations are a joke and most western countries outsourced their food, manufacturing to China.
At least now Bangladesh and other countries are cheaper to make goods and they may have better morals to not sell poison. Saving the CCP face is more important than actually making the right choice.

I felt like those people are drenched in fish guts and always smell like fish grease. It's like some people think snakes are slimy because of how shiny they are, same thing was with me and chinese and fish slime.

Years and years ago I met a Welsh couple travelling. Funny people. They had just come from China. Back when it was still pretty communist, so rare for a foreigner to travel there. He was a bigger guy and said he'd lost a lot of weight travelling through China. I ask, "Was it because the food was healthier?" He says, "No, no. No one spoke English so you had to go into the kitchen and point at what you wanted to eat. But after seeing the kitchens the only thing I wanted was rice."
