I don't think this laptop is even for the student that wants to do note taking. I'm a student that takes lots of notes for university on my laptop and not even I would spend $1300 just for a note-taking laptop. With that kinda money, I could soup up my dorm with a small LCD TV, a PS4, a decent small netbook and still have enough money to buy all my school textbooks. It's just not really worth it to buy just for note-taking/everyday browsing. Not to mention all the adapters that are needed to utilize important ports such as HDMI, USB, and SD Card. Those adapters would probably rack up an additional $100-150. It's just not worth spending $1400 on a very pretty laptop that isn't very fast...
Real students that have to do real work need to rely on a portable , durable machine that always works perfectly, not playing ps4 in their underwear.
sgtsnakeeyes11 By real work do you mean essays or software like ProE or MatLab? Then if it's the latter, this machine is useless. Weak. But for this price you can get a decent laptop that would be able to run those programs.

Why is this computer weak? It turboboosts to 2.4ghz when needed. I'm going to be using Xcode on this thing. It has 8gb of ram and 256gb SSD standard. Specs are pretty cool for a 13mm laptop.
***** The current 15" Retina MBP is amazing and does everything. Hardly anything I would change there. This new macbook is a glimpse from the future where we rely even less on cords. In it first form it is very niche, as was MBA when it first came out.
Look i'm sure the engineering costs of developing this thing were really high. Its a technical marvel that something like this is even possible. But as a consumer I feel like this thing is a huge fucking ripoff. So you want me to pay $1200 for a dual core processor with ONE USB port?! No way.
I get that they need to make their money back, but the least they could do is match the retail price with the value of the machine.
For the target people they value more size and weight that processor power. So is not a ripoff. Is not for every one but the target audience where asking for this.

Second generation will have to be even thinner, so they'll remove the one port. There won't be any way to charge it, so you'll have to throw it out and spend another $1300 every 8 hours, which most Apple fans are more than willing to do anyway.

It starts at $1,299 I don't care how much you use a computer, $1,299 for something that has no USB ports and an audio jack. This thing is obviously for show and anyone who gets it wants it for the name. You can't justify that price for the product you get.
Its called the cloud, in 1997 when floppy disks were the norm, apple introduced the iMac with no floppy disk, and everyone was like waaaatt?! When the MacBook Air cameout with no DVD drive people were freaking out. Does anyone use floppy disks now? Some people behind in tech might use DVD's in there computer but most people dont.
This is basically a tablet with a keyboard attached :/ no reason it should be expensive but no reason it should also exist either. With this tiny size, they are better off making this into a phone.

I feel like a lot of people take this machine for granted. The vast majority of people use laptops for exactly what this is meant for. Low processing requirement tasks like streaming and web browsing and writing. This does that fine. But in any other late this computer is pure innovation. The display is beautiful, its so light that you dont think that it is in your backpack. Every aspect is condensed and shrunk to the max while still being a viable computer.
I am not saying that this is the laptop for me. I do think it has flaws. If it had even 2 usb-c ports than maybe, but it isn't for me. I am not a fanboy I just think this deserves a little respect.

There's nothing special about this laptop other than that it's super thin and has a very high resolution screen. Again, that's improvement, not innovation.

Asus unveiled the UX305 and nobody cared, Apple unveiled a lesser computer and everybody lost their minds.
The UX305, has a bigger screen, more ports and is thinner at 12.3mm, 10hrs battery. The only down side is the weight, it's .6 heavier. I bought it because I can't carry my G75 all the time and it comes with 5 years warranty and 2 years accidental coverage out of the box. (How much do you have to pay Apple to get that?!)

This race to make everything thin drives me insane. I'm tired of having to sacrifice things like battery life and now much needed ports on a laptop for the sake of something being thin. I hate it in phones and tablets and now its spilled over into laptops. WTG Apple.
This is what happens when only a couple of companies dominate things. it sucks for consumers, because we end up getting inferior products with a huge price tag on them.
tbh I was just fine with the size and weight of the iphone 4. It actually fit in my hand and it was heavy enough to at least make me feel like I bought something expensive. I really miss the feel of that phone with my galaxy s3 as it has plastic all around the back and I need 2 hands to get anything done.

When Apple first introduced the Retina Display MacBook Pro, it's actually less powerful than its non-Retina, thicker MacBook Pro.
Apple is aware that the laptop is ahead of its time, so they continue to sell the 'older' models. Same thing is happening here.
The MacBook line will eventually replace the current MacBook Air line when people finally embrace the Cloud and give up on USB drives.

if you own a Macbook Air you'll know that the thunderbolt ports the largest port on the device and to go any thinner they'll need to get rid of it and since type c supports display port out bandwidth in addition to data and audio.. it makes sense. Plus Apple has no problem going 'hey all that shit you bought for that connector? well it sucks. we have new stuff now'

I was initially upset about this mac due to this current trend of sacrificing specs for thinness but I now see it was created for a certain demographic in mind. I still don't get why tech companies think we care so much about how thin electronics are when we actually don't. I think they are just trying to out do themselves.
I think it's mostly Apple that's playing the thin game. I mean, other companies are getting thinner, but they're not making massive sacrifices to get there.
For the same price you can get a 13" retina MBP. So at least you have a choice.

The lack of ports makes this automatically useless for anyone who does anything more than go on Facebook on a laptop. The spec sheet proves it. Great screen and shitty processor.
It's a neat proof of concept and it's great that they can get a computer so thin but there are just too many compromises.
I'm a heavy tech user and I haven't used a USB in years. It's called cloud storage :P

Its just a tablet with a good keyboard that last all day and is super easy to carry. Not for games or video editing. Good for someone like me who has to type all the damn time and only wanted to relax by watching a youtube video or netflix now and then.

I use mid 2012 MacBook Pro. But it makes annoying sound nowdays, I think it comes from fan because faster fan spins, louder that sound is. It sounds like there is little plastic part in the fan which is broken. But I can still use it so no problem there. Im thinking of buying 2015 MacBook Pro soon.

I am a fan of Apple's computers, particularly the Macbook pro line. I have one myself and its great and normally I like all of their products (except the iPhone, hate it). But I have to say this. Unless you have way too much money on your hands, don't buy this machine. It would be ok if it at least had a better processor. So yeah, looks great, and I'm amazed how thin this is, but overall not good value for 1299.

People should understand that not everyone needs heavy lifting machines for what they do.
I can see this being used by journalists, writers, programmers and web developers, students et cetera.
Yeah sure you can make a beast of a desktop with half of the $1300, but that's just you, you're a geek and you like gaming or whatever it is you do.
Most people don't use their machines passionately.
Why would they not just buy a 200 dollar micro book, that is faster and can do much more. For the price of the TAX on this thing I can get a microbook that is 200 times faster, has a better battery, and has ports.
I am a computer science student at university and the best thing I ever bought was my Dell XPS 13, really don't see how this new mac book beats it in anyway.
If you are willing to spend over a thousand bucks on a note taking machine go for it. Just know that there are cheaper, thin and stylish options out there. If you need some example I would be happy to provide some.
I am a programmer and I also do some IT so I help people with their stuff and I would not ever recommend this machine. And yes MAC do get viruses and they are getting more of them as they become more popular.

***** You really need to try better. The Surface Pro 3 is obviously better in terms of ports. Not only does it have the USB and Audio ports that the MacBook has, it also has a micro sd card slot, mini displayport out, microsd as well as a dedicated charging port which can also double as a dock.
***** What are you talking about? The surface Pro 3 Starts at only $799 and it has not only a USB 3.0 port it also has a microSD card reader and a mini display port. So I don't know what you were thinking of but it certainly wasn't The Pro 3.
I JUST FOUND OUT THAT I PASSED FINE ARTS SCHOOL. But I'm pissed off cause they require us to have MacBook. Can't I just use my Toshiba laptop? Now I have to get this laptop which in my opinion is so expensive & I feel bad for my parents who have to pay for it. 😧

Ask the school why it does require you to use a Mac, since it is most often software orientated, like having to use Adobe or other products.
If you communicate your needs appropriately you might get your wish.
And the school you want to go to surely does not require this specific, untested model. They just require a Mac, for whatever unstated reasons.
Why do you have to get this particular model? MacBook Pro is the best laptop out there in many people's opinion, and the MacBook Air is a great machine too.
Martel Gstreng Apple student discounts are a bit weird. They apply to every device they sell as far as I'm aware, but at least in the UK whenever I've looked it works out slightly cheaper to buy the computer from Amazon.

Why this model? It has not been released yet in order for the school to test it for its purposes.
On that ground alone you have a case.
For all of the people who legitimately do not get it: this is a niche product. It's not meant to be the computer for everybody. It may be the computer for one who pretty much needs an iPad-sized/-weighted laptop, who also is almost completely wireless and is seriously looking for a fashionable computer.
I could see myself buying this computer if I wasn't already in love with a 15-inch display size. I already use AirDrop to transfer all of my files (that's if iCloud doesn't already do it), I have an Apple TV if I ever needed to use a bigger screen, and 9-hours for battery life is more than I actually use my computer for daily, and I'm a writer, so I use it often.
At the end of the day, this is a fabulous design to me. Functionally, it does everything that I need a machine with OS X, and with less ports, it just there are far less distractions than there's ever been. This is the prettiest computer that I've ever seen; I might just sell my MacBook Pro with Retina Display to get this.
I couldn't agree more, I wish the screen was a tad bigger, maybe 13, and I will be getting the upgraded ram and storage, but honestly this is perfect for me starting college

I'm a PHP developer. This machine looks super attractive to me. I already use Macs for development, this machine just fixes all the issues I have with my Air. So when you ask who this machine is for, I think a big part of the answer is developers. This is really all we need. Yeah it sucks we'll have to buy dongles for external displays and power, but that's a price I'm willing to pay.

I got a Acer laptop for 200 bucks that I use for notes in college. Its about 300 times faster then this POS has 3 USB ports and 1 USB 3.0 port and excellent battery life.

Despite what many people say, this macbook may actually be very good. Let me address some issues:
-power: recent benchmark test shows that it's CPU is on par with an upgraded 2011 MBA. Now throw in an upgraded graphics card and other component along with its new 14 nm technology and an optional upgrade to 1.3 ghz and large memory storage, you can have yourself a machine that's on par with a 2014 MBA, but with the benefits of a better screen and lighter weight
-ports: honestly, I rarely use ports. But I do plan on buying a 10 dollar multi usbc port from Amazon and I already have a fantastic Bluetooth mouse that's very similar to my wired cm storm gaming mouse and doesn't require a USB receiver.
The only issue is the webcam (lol) and price tag.

It's the tock, not the tick, of Intel's cpu design that carries real performance improvements. I believe the Geekbench scores that determined the power of a 2011 MBA factor in things such as graphics performance anyway.

I saw some kid walk into an Apple store the other day, with absolutely NO IDEA about anything relating to computers. Some Apple sales guy was able to convince him to buy the high end of this machine in about 10 minutes after explaining, very generically, it's features. I felt so bad for the kid. For the same price he paid for the machine, he could have gotten a MBA or even a low end rMBP. A lot better use of his money in more ways than one could imagine. Even as a netbook or a portable machine, I don't think I'd get this machine. The keys are uncomfortable. It's actually too thin for a laptop. For laptops and other everyday use machines/workstations I have, I'd like for it to have a little "meat on it's bones" so to speak. To each his own.

i dont see the point in more ports for new laptops. We are moving into complete internet based laptop usage and more ports just make the laptop look bulkier. It's kind of like a dvd drive, no one uses them anymore and without it theres more space for better technology so designers ust leave them out. In 5 years there won't be anything to put into a USB port, we have dropbox for storage, bluetooth for screen projecting and loads of other technologies.

The problem with this is Internet speed.
Since ISPs (at least here in the US) are greedy, money loving sons of bitches, they have basically a monopoly and charge outrageous prices.
In my city, specifically the house I live in, the fastest speed AT&T U-Verse offers is 6mbps down and ~.7mbps up.
So as you can imagine, if you want to go "cloud based" a slow internet connection isn't going to cut it. Downloading a 1gb file takes about 30 minutes on our speed, and uploading 1gb takes well over 6.5hrs.
Until ISPs become more limited, in terms of their BS prices, I don't think that the "cloud" will be as successful as it can be.

I'm a huge apple fan but when I saw the specs i laughed out loud, Lightweight is handy but honestly who needs a laptop THAT thin? Even the older macbook air's are perfectly fine for those tasks, cheap/at the same price, and can do a lot more!

What's your reasoning behind this? Have you never used OSX? I don't like Apple as a company but because of my fondness for Linux I cant help but love using OSX. It's well built and Unix based with compatibility for great apps for productivity not to mention a sleek design. If you like Linux you should at least objectively understand the beauty of OSX.

My bad, from AUS. No but really, the Macbook Pro Base was $1,599 before, now it's $1,799, because of the recent cpu upgrade etc. The New Macbook Base is $1,799.....I dunno, seriously I must be missing something, why anyone would choose the Macbook over the Macbook Pro is beyond me. Pro has same battery life, heaps more power, better integrated graphics, retina screen and sure it is a teensy bit heavier, I'm lost. Whhhyyyy?

I just don't get... WHY? no one is putting laptops in their pockets. No one is asking for a laptop as thin as a phone. IT'S POINTLESS (or should I say pointy) as fuck. No USB port? Who would want this shit? This is for 14 year old girls with rich daddy's who buy them whatever they want. This isn't for anyone who needs anything more than a Facebook machine. A baby could probably snap this thing in half if it tried. Hell, imagine dropping this thing, JUST ONCE. It's done for. So stupid. But of course it's sold out within seconds.

For journalists, this is an impractical machine, as they require a keyboard that feels comfortable to type on, and keys with such low travel won't be very practical for quick typing.
For students that use it as a side machine, this is an impractical machine as well, not only for the abovementioned reasons, but also because no student will be able to afford it. Most likely, they'll be better off using netbooks. And students that need a good screen? They'll most likely need a powerful laptop as well, to run specific programmes (photoshop, blender, maple, unity, etc.).
I mean, don't get me wrong, it looks nice, and the screen has crisp graphics as well, but why spend so much on it? There are plenty of cheaper machines with a nice screen as well, with a lot of additional features added on. The thinness, in my opinion, is merely a fancy novelty. You don't need to make a laptop to be as thin as a paper sheet in order to make it portable. You sacrifice too much for it.

You're all sort of correct. But as usual with Apple products, there are better, cheaper machines already on the market.
This laptop does fit some demographics but that still doesn't justify making so many fucking retarded compromises just so that they can say they have the thinnest laptop around. Who cares about thickness in a laptop? I mean, as long as it's not like one of those late 90s laptops that's like 4 inches thick, who cares. Ports and battery over pointless thinnes any day.
Using this over an iPad when I travel with my DSLR will be perfect on the go!!
This is the year Apple becomes a luxury brand. Hopefully they keep some pro stuff forever, but it's pointless to complain anymore. Apple is going the direction of high income consumers who need basic computer functions. I'm going PC for my next desktop and mac for my next laptop.

Patrick Barrett The only Apple product I've ever owned was an iPod in 2005 and it broke in a couple of years. I prefer Windows as well because it just makes sense and I am not out there to participate in a beauty contest. I seek to work hard and pay a reasonable amount of money for what I use.
Abdulai Bah Google image search "apple 1999". Before the original iPhone apple was the colorful not as good alternative to Windows machines. It's been the Apple you know since 10-12 years ago or so.
Abdulai Bah I have two iPods (the iTouch is where my mum bought it for me when I said that I didn't really want one) the iTouch is so slow that I can really only play music on it now as apple is crap for updating their older stuff as much as possible. If the iTouch broke for whatever reason I'd have no problem with using my nano. Many apps I can't download because you can only download the iOS 8version of them now. (For me I find music players to last really well for me, my walkman still works from 2005, the software for it was a pain in the arse and I think you can't get it anyway now.

Whenever I've plugged a cord of some sort into my laptop, it's only been on my desk at home. I see do disadvantage to adapters.
Was tossing up between macbook and surface for uni. Went with the surface because ICT course so probs would be more useful. If I were to make the choice now, with the new Macbook would clearly go to the Surface.

Daniel Walker I'm not sure, windows is a safe call but a lot of people have macs, my programing lecturer even has one. Some ways they are better than windows like not needing a
custom terminal for compilers.
Your call, best look up your unit and see if it requires a certain laptop.
It's thin, it has a headphone jack, you can do some light video editing on it and it's beautiful. Enough for me to use it on the go when I'm not at my desk

This is the complete opposite of innovation. Practically everything about this screams inconvenience. 1 port used only by an adapter, terrible keyboard, no fans, overall a downgrade. Battery life, thinness and lightness does not equal innovation. Its a glorified ipad. Terrible processor and probably shit storage.....
***** Tablets have this level of hardware, it's not great for how thin it is. If you're going to say it's thinness is great, the only thing you can say is it's very thin vs other laptops. Honestly if it wasn't starting at $1299 I'd probably buy one, and that's coming from someone who's only ever owned 1 product by Apple(iPod Touch), but that doesn't mean it's a good laptop, it just means it looks good.

I’m pretty sure the thinness isn’t the reason for the backlit Apple logo to be sacrificed. The MacBook Air is now the only laptop with the light up logo, and have you noticed how it’s the only one that comes in only silver? Apple eliminates the light up logo whenever they release a new color option for the device. The MacBook Pro lost it when it came in space gray, the MacBook lost it when it came in the other colors, and if the MacBook Air ever comes in another color, I can guarantee you, it will lose the light up logo.

The force touch is really good. I completely did not believe that it will replace a physical button, but after I tried it, I have changed my mind. Of course, the feedback is softer than an actual button, but it emulates the feel 100% accurate. I don't get impressed by tech that often, but I am impressed by the new trackpad.
