In this video we explore the abandoned section of railway line from the lost Gildersome Station towards the Farnley Flying Junction and ending at the Holbeck/Farnley Viaduct. We look for anything left behind, or any relics still remaining to this day.

I lost my right leg in 1954 when I ran across Manchester road, Milnsbridge without looking, until the Suez Crisis I was taken to the Limb Fitting Centre at Chapel Allerton, Leeds by ambulance.
The petrol shortages meant that mum was asked to make our own way there, one trip on the Huddersfield to Leeds bus service, which took ages, was enough and we then went by train
In time my retired grandad took over the trip for breakages and lengthening of my tin leg and we always travelled by train, a tram up to Chapel Allerton and if we finished early enough a meal at Winsors (?) Restaurant in Leeds.
I continued using the train until I got my own car in 1969, I remember when steam was being phased out passing a yard on the left just before Leeds with what seemed like hundreds of steam engines parked up nose to tail.
I hope you can help with a memory I am not sure of, we usually travelled on stoppers and I seem to remember one station which had a brick wall down the centre of the two tracks.
We moved to Kirkheaton in 1965 and the buses were of a type I’d only seen in the East Riding, upstairs 4 person bench seats and a lowered walkway down the side, needed to get under the Kirkburton line bridge at the bottom of the Kirkheaton.
I have seen several You Tube videos on the Kirkburton and Holmfirth, where I worked for 30 years, lines but they are a bit ancient, maybe a future project for you.

Dunlop & Ranken steel stockholders were first on the Farnley Branch before the line crossed Whitehall Road on an over bridge and led into Farnley Fireclay works. I can remember it all before it was redeveloped!

Hi Darren, in your last video you came across a couple of rusty metal large pins. These were actually used to secure the railway tracks onto the wooden sleepers.

The line from Shipley Windhill to Thackley is still walkable, and would make a great series Darren. Great work keep it up, you brighten up my Sundays!

This is my favourite video yet . As a child I lived in Wortley and I remember seeing the old station from the top of buses going in to town. It was not used but still standing. Thanks I love you videos. Now I have moved to Sunderland I live vicariously through you 😂
The Loco Shed you referred to was Farnley Junction Shed which was coded 25G from 1948 to Sept. 1956 when it was recoded 55c which it kept until it's closure in Nov. 1966. R.S. Grimley's Shed Directory of 1947 vintage describes access to Farnley Junction Shed as follows :- "The shed is on the west side of the line south of Farnley & Wortley Station. The yard is visible from the line. Turn right outside Farnley & Wortley Station along Whitehall Road. Turn left into Royds Lane and bear right along a rough road just before the railway overbridge. This leads up a hill and gradually turns into a cinder path. The shed is at the top of the hill. Walking time 15 mins.
I use to explore the dunlop site as a teenager (before the housing estate was built) and you could still see the remains of the tracks on the floor around the site

Having grown up in Farnley, we would have loved a train station nearby! Would not have to had to experienced the tragedy known as the 42 bus then
Cheers Darren, I live on the new housing estate at Farnley/Wortley junction and can see the restored bridge from my house. In fact I live right where the up and down track meets on its way towards Whitehall road. if you ever do a video about the Farnley Branch line you’re more than welcome to start in my back garden and hop over the fence. I’ve walked it before and there is some concrete and some track still visible, also an old underpass in someone’s garden on the Kirkdales.

That old picture at 13:01 isn't Farnley & Wortley station, it's Otley. Not to worry though, it's been a great series, thank you for sharing. :)

Nice to see the conclusion of the series, I have to say its been fascinating, not obvs just the bits down here in Hecky/Liversedge but the bits I pass on the 229 and now indeed the 254, 255 on Whitehall Road, at Dragon Bridge (which has some interesting relics floating about). The sceptic in me says though, just these last 2 episodes areas that they cover, probably more than any that if they had been mothballed at closure, a station at Gildersome near our fare stage Branch end, and maybe up at the new BP site would have been a great saver of co2! Finally on the face of it these housing developments right on railway infrastructure thats long been abandoned is a good idea until it comes to stuff like the sandblasted Bridge. These massive civil engineering behemoths still need upkeep, as I said in previous messages, who pays, and why not use the thing for what it was constructed for!

Ben ps I've seen fotos of it and know the story from books and indeed TH-cam but what about the Brighouse line as a new subject, which can be seen of Halifax Road, bailiff Bridge, and up towards Wyke and the famous cut off viaduct we pass on service 255.
Really enjoyed that series. A lot of research gone into that fascinating the old photographs that you blend in. Grit and determination to get that done in the pouring rain 🌧. The restored bridge looks 👌 and should last for many more years and what's left of the abutments is good to see. Seems so tranquil on the old lines compared to the noise traffic, and warehouses below. Well done all three of you and hope dried out now.🌧🌨

Thank you, Ian. Yes it was an interesting project to work on with Darren. Quite a bit of research went into producing the Documentary series. 9 Vlogs later we are pleased with the finished product. I think we have succeeded in keeping the memory of the Leeds New Line alive and maybe educating a few people about their local railway heritage and the transport links we once had in West Yorkshire. 🙂👍

Wow, Darren - a fantastic series of videos and, for me personally, you really saved the best for last. As a kid, I had an early morning newspaper delivery job in the Beeston area. The furthest point on the round was a farmhouse near the top of Crow Nest Lane, which overlooked the valley, towards the Farnley sidings. This would have been the late 1960s or early 70s and I still recall the sounds of what I assumed was shunting operations in and around the MPD. In later life, I had a job based on Gelderd Road and would often spend my lunch breaks wandering around the remains of the Leeds New Line, the Farnley sidings and the Holbeck viaduct. I've stood on many of the spots shown in your part 9 video, and have walked through the Royds Lane underpass tunnel on many occasions (before the new housing development appeared). A big thankyou to yourself and your collaborators for making and sharing these brilliant videos.
Hello There I think if you look at your video again the station waiting room is still there that's where the station was. The old wood train shed is still there and is used as a reclamation yard / 2nd hand shop thing. The waiting room is the stone building just next to it.

Nigel, he's done the line from Ardsley through Morley, Gildersome, Drighlington etc., along to Dudley Hill and to the Pudsey stations. Is that the one you mean?
@@DaveinLeeds Not quite. I was referring to the line that branched of to the right at Adwalton Jn and dropped down Batley, Dewsbury Central and Wakefield Westgate.

I'm not surpised at how quickly whole railways can be erased from history. I live in a little town in Scotland and what I thought was a small station near a paddle steamer pier, actually was a large multi-tracked station with a huge platform all designed to accommodate hundereds of tourists and funnel them onto the ships. All gone now, just a small modern stop the rest grass and scrub.
Once again great stuff, thank you. How many Leeds fans realise the history of what they are walking over down the ginnel from Whitehall to Geldard Road.

The picture that you show of the Farnley and wortley Station at 13:03 is a picture of Otley station
If it is. Then it matches perfectly. Even the chimneys are the same on the buildings there today. The hill behind also matches. Also the houses to the right.
I live in Saltaire and have travelled to Leeds many many times by train(including today) so I found myself checking out the old lines,bridges,sidings and so on. It seems mad the amount of hours put into these tunnels and abutments just to be left to fall in disrepair or filled in. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻

Me too. Apparently not.
No the Leeds New Line went into City Station as the trains using it went on to York and beyond. Wellington Street for for 'Midland' trains to Skipton and Carlisle.
It’ll be great if you did a continuation of the Dunlop and Rankrn branch off of the Farnley junction in a follow up video.

Love videos like this. It shows how much is lost. I live in East Kilbride where the train terminates. But it used to run futher on. I've followed the line the best I can, some of it's inaccessible and some of it's being built on.
Really enjoyed this series Darren, excellent research and content as usual, such a lot of railway history in this area to be documented, the Shipley/ Thackley and beyond, Yeadon, Otley etc. all nuggets for future adventures as mentioned in other comments, excellent work - looking forward to the next.
Really great videos. If you're interested I know of two other lines that would be great to look into. One is the Pickle Bridge Line that ran from Huddersfield to Bradford past Brighouse, Wyke, etc. Another is the Rishworth Branch line from Sowerby Bridge. There's loads of remains, probably more on the Rishworth one. There's even the old platform left in Rishworth.

Great videos Darren the now and then pictures of the railways are what makes the vlogs stand out because lets be honest the changes are hard to believe that railways ever existed in many places sometimes.

Enjoyed the series, great ending.
Though still frustrating that all this is gone, would have really helped with the situation we're finding ourselves with in Brexit, along with the rampant increases in road traffic.
It has been a trip down memory lane of 60 years to follow this series thank you Darren! One or two helpful points if I may say :- @ 3.51 to 4.23 the lane you’re standing was straight from Gelderd Rd under up line to Snittles farm (now new development), @ 6.26 was an embankment (looking down on train) removed for M621. The gradient was 1 in 70 nearly all way to Birstal. @ 12.04 the L N L connected with the original adjacent to Farnley shed and I don’t think there was a connection with the triangle, it was just for shed convenience. The long viaduct to to Holbeck was built by the L N W R well before L N L.

You should maybe try further afield such as much of the Scottish border lines that Criss crossed between England and Scotland - some little gems, - rothbury branch - Wooler branch- border counties - reedsmouth etc a spiders web of lines all gone.

As far as I know, the bridge across Gelderd Road that you are standing on at 15:30 will need a lot of money spending on it in the not too distant future and so there is a likelihood that it will be removed sometime during the next few years.
It's quite a large span and there are some, age related, structural problems brewing.

When did this line get removed?
In the 60s for the gildersome section. The Holbeck viaduct stopped being used in the 90s.
The through route from Cleckheaton to Leeds was abandoned in August of 1965, with track being removed from 1967 onwards from the Leeds end.
