    Good video, but ALWAYS before disassembling a device with an included battery, disconnect it and press the power button to eliminate voltage from the capacitors.

    Latitude D620 and D630 are laptop royalty. They have been around since the "computer mesolithic" and are rock solid reliable (as well as being Dell-heavy!!!). I was using one up to 2019. Dell were still updating BIOS files for D630 in 2020 which is quite impressive. If you are doing simple undemanding stuff then there is plenty life in them. If only the latest stuff was as tough and reliable.

    I bought one of these for almost $30 for my collection. The Panasonic made battery was totally dead but it came back to life, but it gets a little too warm for my liking. It has a Windows Vista Business COA on it, has a C2D T8300 @ 2.4ghz and 2gb of RAM. I might get it 4 gigs, heard it can use 8, but some people selling ram on ebay make it way to expensive.

      I’ve noticed it does get quite hot on the bottom at times. The native support for RAM caps at 4 GiB, but there are a number of reports that suggest 8 works just fine. I’d put in an SSD before getting more RAM.

    I found this laptop model at a thrift store in my area for 8 dollars. It was missing the power cable. So I got one off ebay for 10. The Windows XP install that came with it was being very slow and I realized it was the 32 bit version, on a 64 bit laptop. Dell didn't offer drivers for XP x64 on the driver site, so I decided to put 7 on it instead. Now its perfect. Only problem now is it only has 2GB ram. It's not harming anything being that low, but since it can hold 8GB I wanted to get 4 4GB sticks. But the current price on ebay, amazon, and newegg are over a hundred dollars... For old ram... Either way I'm happy I got this laptop so cheap. The previous owner was probably not very tech savvy and ditched it because it was "slow". But I would say over 10 years using the same windows install, only using half the CPU power, kinda does that. lol

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While there are a lot of reports of it taking 8 with no problem, it's only intended to handle 4. I think the $35 upgrade for an SSD is far more worthwhile than the RAM.

    These are very desireable for using Windows XP + factory automotive diagnostic tools on cars from the 80's and 90's. The D620 and D630 is one of the last notebooks with a serial port, which you need.

      I will warn you, it is super slow when you play video games on it with the Intel option for your processor. I upgraded mine to 64 bit from a 32 bit OS and it runs just fine now. Mine only works when you plug it in, and I need to replace the battery. Could be why it's slow.

      Alot of ram kits out there 6400 800mhz ddr2 sodimms. Which are too fast and would be a waste of money to slow them to 666mhz.
      So.. I stuck with 5300 666mhz because that's what this laptop board's max bus speed is. They are non-ecc (no error correcting) and unbuffered.

    I did a scan at crucial and was told I can upgrade to 8G. Right now I have 4G, 2G in each slot. Can I exchange one of them for a 4G and have total 6G?

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I understand it, the native support in this machine caps out at 4 GB.. Before I did this upgrade I read through a number of forums discussing the 8 GB option and saw mixed results.. Since you're going beyond what the machine was intended to do, the results are unpredictable.. It may work perfectly fine if you put that 4 GB stick in, or it may crash, or it may just read only half of it.. You may be able to finagle with different options and get it to work properly.. I don't believe there's a set answer for this one, you'll have to try it and see what happens..

    • @cambium0
      @cambium0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you need a 64-bit os to run 8gb ram. I noticed that the poster had a 32-bit system. But it still recognized all 4 gb's ram. A t60 lenovo machine from just about the same vintage would only recognize 3, even if you had 4 in it.

    • @JordanU

      @@cambium0 The 4 GiB of memory is a hardware constraint listed by Dell. There are some reports of it being able to recognize 8 depending on the version of BIOS you install, but nothing more than 4 is supported by Dell.
      As far as the operating system is concerned, a 32 bit system can recognize up to 4 on any system. The Lenovo machines from the era shared the RAM with the graphics card, which resulted in Windows having less RAM to work with.

    • @JordanU

      The hardware had changed, so the BIOS was performing a full system check which takes well over a minute.. Since I've received so many complains from you about the videos being too long, I figured I would cut out the dead space to make the video 'better'.. Apparently my attempt was in vain..

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all. I wasn't aware that it was doing a full check. Usually a cut like that would indicate that the new RAM didn't work properly the first time, which was the reason I asked.
