There's a difference between caving casually and trying to enter a hole that you can barely fit in, only people who should be doing this are professionals
Ted the Caver is still my favorite creepypasta to date. It aged pretty well considering the date it was written. The fact that you cant really tell if its fiction or not on first reading is so crazy to me and awesome. This is one of the VERY few creepypastas that actually had me on edge for the entire story. For a stpry made in 2001, id give it a 9/10
@jaydub2546 what? I'm just saying it aged incredibly well for being written in 2001. A lot of old stories age poorly. It's a compliment mate. I'm not trying to downplay its quality
This in a small way reminds me of a guy name Jones that died in Utah cave exploring with his family on Thanksgiving. They never got him out of the cave and it’s his tomb to this day. They cemented the cave off after his death. It’s an insane and sad stroy
This is one of those stories i just can't sit through, getting stuck in a cave makes me very jittery to even listen to. Still gave a like tho! Keep it up
Same. I had a full on panic attack the first time i listened to it, on that channel called Horror Stories. This is extra rough because i love when muta does deep dives. No pun intended.
When Mutahar said "creepy gaming" it sent me into a gigantic flashback to early youtube during my whole creepypasta/urban legend phase that, honestly speaking, never grew out of and still adore to this day.
Dude has some good writing skills. That was a somewhat cool story and a kickstarter for other cool stories. It was obvious that it was exaggerated and spiced up but their adventure in the cave still seemed like a cool story despite that.
Nice that screech sound. There is another story I heard once about a miner hearing that in a shaft as he was eating his lunch alone. I had a recurring nightmare as a child where this would happen to me in the attic, every night, and it went away when I moved house. Terrifying, I can still hear it in my memory. You feel it in your whole body
If anyone is interested in listening to this being narrated The Dark Somnium has an amazing narration of this story that honestly gave me chills the first time I listened to it
that's the peak of horror narration. That's where I started and I haven't found anything as good. It's almost depressing because I'll never forget how I felt riveted to every word.
I've listened to a ton of narrations of this story since this is my favorite horror story (alongside Anasis Goatman Story). Dark Somnium's narration is still the best one I've come across.
Thanks for the rec! I read Ted the Caver like 20 years ago or something and I've never forgotten it despite never wanting to read it again. I was in like middle school. A good narration would be cool though.
Since the cave was isolated from the outside, apart from s small passage, it could be a build up of some gas that caused those feelings. CO2 in particular could bring feelings of dread, cold sweat and shortness of breath. The stench of rotten meat makes me think about sulfur and that could mean anaerobic bacteria that uses sulfur as a catalyst in their "respiration". The screaming could mean a mountain lion lives in the cave, which could explain the dog cowering, the stench and the feeling of dread, but it would mean the cave is connected to the outside in some way. The paintings could be whatever, either something they made up from regular scratchings or some ancient cave paintings, which should be notified about to the authorities because it's an important archeological find.
I do like seeing a more rational explanation of the events of the story. Then again I suppose part of the fun of reading it is that you won't know for sure if something supernatural happened
@@catkillsagain105 i mean, apparently it was all fabrication, a creepypasta. The cave and the passage exist, but everything else was made up. Cool story anyway
@@Eisenwulf666 Yeah, I mean I think the rational parts of our brains know that but the story is so well written and almost believable enough to make you think otherwise. Definitely enjoyed seeing Muta get to the bottom of this classic story
im a long time caver, they just went into a low oxygen tunnel. Low oxygen levels tend to increase breathe rate, increased heart rate, exhaustion, highend senses, lose of time and hallucinations. The terrible smell is likely just wet sulfur or a dead animal in the water.
The Dogs behaviour, the sudden bad feelings, the "mystery sickness", the breezes, the smell... Sounds like a classic case of "stale air" to me - noxious gases are a very real danger in caving
The fact they brought a dog in a cave made me extremely anxious even though I know it's not about the dog it reminded me of a recent story my mom told me about a dog who got lost in a cave and ended up just sitting there until a crew found her and she kinda gave up going anywhere because even though dogs have better vision than humans, cave darkness is still too dark to really find your way out. (I used to go caving with my grandmother and this also makes me worry about her because she still decides to go caving and she likes to trespass and look for cool finds especially since she has a way of passing places that most cant because she works for wilderness type jobs)
It's been probably over a decade since I first found Ted the Caver, and to this day it's still one of the most genuinely frightening creepypastas I've ever read (and I read a LOT as a teen). There's just a certain authentic stank about the pictures and detailed descriptions that make it hit differently. Thought it was real when I was younger too!
Anytime I think about Ted, I can’t help but also think about Kenny Veach, also known as SnakeBitMcGee. His disappearance, whether he did it to himself or not, is a mystery I’ve thought about since he went missing.
I think about him when I'm in the desert...all the little caves ... I do lean towards acts of men involved in his disappearance but I wonder too, what I would do if I found M cave one day... Run, probably.
@@Stepatee I lean more towards the idea that he committed suicide. Considering what his partner has said about him, I could see him having found the cave, but realizing it wasn't as impressive as he originally thought. Since there was alot of pressure on him from skeptics and with his depression influencing him, he might have decided to just end it there.
Someone has already said it but I need to help get this man out there as DarkSomnium is criminally underrated. If you want to listen to this story then listen to DarkSomniums narration, his narrations are top notch quality. He adds haunting music, quality sound effects, and some really convincing voice acting. I cannot listen to any other creepypasta narrator because they all fail to immerse me in the story like DarkSomnium can. Please listen to his narrations

TH-cam should pay their creators fairly, but independent sponsors allow creators more freedom. Being treated more like an exclusive employee and not using independent sponsors would mean towing the line and cowing to TH-cam’s rules to maintain “ad friendliness”. As it is creators have to stick to a lot of rules to be on the platform to begin with, but at least they’re not dependent on revenue exclusively from TH-cam advertising (and that’s how YT itself makes its money). Other sponsors can negotiate with creators with a view to the content they create (and any moral questions about it) in mind going in to it, they’re not making their decisions solely with algorithms and machine learning. It allows advertisers to target their desired demographic far more precisely and because it’s an option avaliable to creators of almost any size, even smaller companies with less to spend have a chance to start getting their name out there, it’s a far more egalitarian approach to advertising than some big juggernaut like TH-cam. It is complicated advertising stuff from the field you occupy though, because a lot more people are going to trust you implicitly. You’d better be extra sure that product is something you support before you take a penny.
I always find myself going back to someordinaryarchives to listen to your narration. My older brother got me into your content back in the haunted gaming days and I've been here ever since. Thanks for sticking with this shitty platform and giving us stuff to watch.

Hey Muta, I’ve been a victim of a MacOS browser hack. It was called “search marquis.” I tried to deal with files from the mac but everything was hidden (no surprise as MacBooks suck with letting user have customizable control). Luckily I reset the computer and everything is dandy (files and browser). I would love to see you make a video on the malware. It would be cool to watch. Thanks!

The 'infamous photo' is of John Edward Jones, who was an avid caver, that unfortunately met his end at the Nutty Putty cave. Despite the efforts of hundreds of emergency servicemen, elite cavers, & even commercial geological experts over the course of 28 hours, he couldn't be rescued nor his body recovered. Would recommend looking him up
It’s not, they’re similar photos but the “infamous” Ted one is not of John. I can see the resemblance. Still, the story of John Jones is one of the most important safety awareness stories for caving and everyone should know about it

I recently said in a comment I wanted to see content like this and I don’t know if you saw it or not but I am reallly really happy that you are. Thanks Edit: halfway in and it’s like listening to the old days where mutah used to read creepy pastas. I am really really happy
Ted the caver is the one and only creepypasta that has genuinely made me feel terrified ironically it’s the first but the way it build tension and the horror is amazing
The modern, “creepier” pasta ending: they send Joe into the cave first, he sees the hieroglyphs from an ancient civilization, and lays claim to them (finders keepers) going on to gain fame, fortune and notoriety while the two ex-friends who did all the excavating, are broke at home.
The "modern creepypasta" ending: They go into the cave, fall into a spooky fun house maze, see hieroglyphics covered in hyper realistic blood, and get killed by fluppus wuppus the marketable elsagate monster, and your sat there missing 30 more braincells
If early internet creepypastas where written in modern days: at first you have an original fairly spooky atmospheric pasta, BUT THEN THERE IS MORE CONTENT WITH DIFFERENT CHARACTERS IN THE SAME LOCATION AND THERE IS ALSO A SCARY SPOOPY MONSTER THAT WANT'S TO KILL YOU, BUT THEN WE ADD LAYERS, MAKE THE LOCATION EVEN BIGGER, ADD EVEN MORE 2SPOOKY4ME MONSTERS YOU NEED TO RUN AWAY FROM, EVEN MORE LORE TO THEORIZE ABOUT, AND THEN WE MAKE INDIE HORROR GAMES ABOUT RUNNING AWAY FROM A SCARY MONSTER AND AN ANALOG HORROR SERIES BASED ON THE "LORE" THAT WILL BECOME THE NEXT "SCARIEST GUT-WRENCHING BALL-TWISTING TH-cam HORROR EVAR!!!". GOTTA ADD MORE AND MORE DUMB SHIT AND THEORY LORE SO THE ORIGINAL STORY IS NOW COMPLETELY UNRECOGNIZABLE.
19:56 idk if you noticed but i see a man like figure watching them through that cave. Look closely, it looks like some figure seeing through that dark space. Glad i found this channel!
That was a proper ad. Being able to confidently explain a feature why you personally like it and understanding what it is is exactly what I expect in advertisements if only every advertisement was done how you did yours with the ram based explanation
He said the story end after they came out of the cave Didn't they went back again one more time after that.promising the readers to update in the future which the author didn't.
Ted The Caver was truly an amazing piece of what Creepypastas should've been. I remember back when you used to visit the wiki way back when and god those were simpler times.
I used to go caving in my younger days and I loved it - if my knees could handle it, I'd go again in a heartbeat, it's a whole different world down there. There are 3 things to keep in mind when you do that: - always check the gear before going in - never, ever go in a cave alone. no matter how well you think you now the place - always tell someone on the outside exactly where you are going
7:00 btw DeWalt's are really good, i recommend getting the 18V batteries with them. bought one for a deck project and while my Makita would only be able to drill through 1,5 poles before running out of battery and barely being able to go through, the Dewalt would go through those poles like butter.
I’m going to scare you more: there is NO echo in caves. Nothing. You can scream as much as you want but the deeper you go the quieter it gets. All you’ll end up doing is suffocating and tiring yourself out there is absolutely nothing you can do to call for help if you’re lost
I'm hoping to one day see Mutahar, Caleb and Nux have an interview with Ted on the SomeOrdinaryPodcast, where Mutahar goes back to his roots and talks about how he thinks it's cool that it's the original creepy pasta, Caleb asks Ted if he drinks RC Cola and Nux brings up a completely unrelated topic by joking and excitedly screaming "Ooohhh just like _____! Let's goooo!".
Hearing that true story of that dude that got stuck in the Nutty Putty cave cured me of any desire to go caving ever in my life. The mere thought of willingly squeezing yourself through a tiny hole deep below the ground with no visible way forward? No thanks. I'm not even claustrophobic but that's just going too far. This story did a great job of hooking into that fear
God, I remember that story. Fuck that shit. I remember going through a cave as part of my rappelling merit badge in boy scouts. I still can feel the squeezing sensation of exploring the cave a little bit. Can't imagine squeezing anything more than your stomach against it. Much less laying down and wiggling through
Yeah, that one got me as well. Another story that completely terrified me was a story on Mortis Medias channel about a guy whose friend went into a cave and got stuck in this big opening in the cave but because it was WAY too dark and the whole to get out was way too small, he couldn't get out. Thats not what freaked me out, what freaked me out was the person who was telling the story starts explaining what you would go through physically and mentally being trapped in that level of darkness yet also knowing there is a way out, you just can't find it. Like a so close yet so far scenario. Don't know if it was real or not, it was on his true scary story's videos, but you can never trust people nowadays. Even if it was made up, it was so well written that even if you know its fake, it will still scare the shit out of you. I woke up in the middle of the night and that was playing. Damn near shit myself lol.
@@Nicolas-L-F yeah it was a really good one. i wish i could link it. Unfortunately, the way he does his videos it would take probably days to find it lol. Best bet would be to try and find it on reddit but even then, that would be a needle in a haystack lol.
The only cave I have been to, and willingly go back to whenever I can, is basically a giant dome cut in half, almost like a concert hall - sunlight hits the back, there are no passageways - it is one huge chamber, with the opening/mouth being the entirety of where a fourth “wall” would be.
I remember when you first read this creepypasta i had to stop at like the second or third part because I was just too scared of whatever could be down there lol. I have went back and listened to it later on and I really like it, and I still like your old creepypasta readings. Its cool to hear the true story behind the creepypasta as well, and this deep dive is something I would never have thought about at all! I didnt even think there was much of a backstory or such a rabbithole around it, and I appreciate you making a video about it and diving into it
Ted the Caver still resides in my mind, which is a lot for someone that's extremely forgetful. I came across it after watching Blair Witch and The Descent so it was like eh (I read somewhere too that it's the inspiration for a cave movie, might be the descent). It wasn't until I saw the pictures and further into the story that it gave me chills.
Wow, it turns out I actually live very close to the cave system from this creepypasta. I can literally walk outside and see the mountain this cave system is named after.
That Hodag reference threw me for a loop. It’s a popular mythical creature in northern Wisconsin. They’re an in joke amongst local Boy Scout circles and the northerners that even hold festivals in the monsters honor. Not found in caves as far as I’m aware, though they do live for thousands of years
I feel like the way the story goes it's just not enough to say they copied anyone. Cave horror is as old as caves, and although its a good story, its pretty stock standard.
Who can hate on Muta. He seems like such a solid dude, I would love to be friends with this guy. Also the pictures in the ted the caver really added to the believability of this story. It’s amazing what having some basic pictures to supplement your story can do for its believability
YES! I'm glad I wasnt the only one who was reminded of Ted once I finished HoL. That novel is genuinely horrifying, I remember binge reading it for 8 hours straight because I literally _couldn't_ put it down. If you have any similar recommendations I'd love em! The only other novel I've read that even comes close would probably be Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. It's the first of a trilogy!
Ah! That big, thick book was written by the brother of the singer called Poe. Poe and her brother are very beautifully lyrical, so they have this talent in common. 🙂 She dedicated a song to HoL on her Haunted album as a bonus track where her brother was reading over the music in places. I really miss her stuff.
I live in Wisconsin and Hodag is something we never feared, also never thought of it dwelling in a cave since Rhinelander is wooded forest. Idk this story kinda lost me at the point of it being mentioned as a point.
That's something that always made me hate this story. As someone that grew up in Wisconsin it makes me sad to the Hodag villainized. It's supposed to be a manifestation of animal cruelty and it's meant to punish people that hurt animals. It doesn't hurt people, it's just a silly little goofy guy that plays pranks on people and is only mean to animal abusers
Caves can be very creepy. I have been in quite a few on guided tours. The story seems real from a technical stand point, but when you are that deep with only artificial light your mind can make things up as Ted said. However this story reminds me quite a bit of The Beast in The Cave by H. P. Lovecraft published in 1918, granted a lot has been changed but still the overall premise is the fear of the unknown. Now who ever wrote the story first is hard to tell, and mostly irrelevant. Ted put it on a website to be enjoyed, and Thomas copyrighted it maybe to make some money in the process.
damn, the location part surprised me good, never woulda thought the apparent passage of the OG creepypasta would be anywhere near me, let alone that close.
For the longest time, I had mixed up this tale with the poor guy who actually became stuck while caving and nobody could get him out. Both nailed that caving isn't for me.

There's a difference between caving casually and trying to enter a hole that you can barely fit in, only people who should be doing this are professionals
Idk if I'd say admiration lol
As someone with claustrophobia and severe arachnophobia, I'd be more worried about the cave spiders then the caves themselves
If you ever get the urge to go caving, just remember Nutty Putty Cave
I'm surprised he didn't mention how the pedro mummy's injuries were the same as Ted's in the story. Damaged spine, broken shoulder, head injury
Ted the Caver is still my favorite creepypasta to date. It aged pretty well considering the date it was written. The fact that you cant really tell if its fiction or not on first reading is so crazy to me and awesome. This is one of the VERY few creepypastas that actually had me on edge for the entire story. For a stpry made in 2001, id give it a 9/10
So if it was written yesterday it would be what lol you think story telling got better in 20years or something? Weird
I think I recall this. Big sad for sure, especially that they couldnt get him out even after he perished.
Ah yes, Nutty Putty Cave.
thats what I was thinking about too
Mossdale caverns incident was similar as well
@Kavetion
Cap and cope.
Forbid you ever learn about John Jones and the Nutty Putty cave. Several channels including Qxir covered that story, it's the stuff of nightmares.
@@digidv85 interesting…… 🤔
You should watch The Descent
It's a terrible death, I don't know which is worse; being left at Sea or being stuck in a stone coffin
If anyone is interested in listening to this being narrated The Dark Somnium has an amazing narration of this story that honestly gave me chills the first time I listened to it
Dark Somnium is PEAK horror channel
that's the peak of horror narration.
Dark Somnium's narrations, audio design and atmosphere are absolutely unmatched. Definitely a great recommendation
@@catkillsagain105 agreed, i love all of Muta's videos, but a good old creepypasta just gives me strength

Absolute menace
LMAO fair
im a long time caver, they just went into a low oxygen tunnel. Low oxygen levels tend to increase breathe rate, increased heart rate, exhaustion, highend senses, lose of time and hallucinations. The terrible smell is likely just wet sulfur or a dead animal in the water.
it's a fake story
@@hurricane3518 Yes, but its a very believable story.
What an odd comment. It’s a fictional story.
"uhh its a fake story, you cant add explanations to the fake story to make it more realistic!!!"🤓
@@randomannoyance 😂😂😂😂
Nothing beats a +50min Mutah video💯

It's been probably over a decade since I first found Ted the Caver, and to this day it's still one of the most genuinely frightening creepypastas I've ever read (and I read a LOT as a teen). There's just a certain authentic stank about the pictures and detailed descriptions that make it hit differently. Thought it was real when I was younger too!
“authentic stank” is the perfect descriptor for this story lol
Anytime I think about Ted, I can’t help but also think about Kenny Veach, also known as SnakeBitMcGee. His disappearance, whether he did it to himself or not, is a mystery I’ve thought about since he went missing.
I think about him when I'm in the desert...all the little caves ...
I do lean towards acts of men involved in his disappearance but I wonder too, what I would do if I found M cave one day...
Run, probably.
M

Yeah i agree DarkSomnium is really cool. My favourite video is the secret British oil rig in the north sea story. I really liked it.

i rlly appreciate how you actually accept sponsors from companies related to things you talk abt on your channel i find it rlly great
no it sucks and TH-cam should just pay producers fairly
@@myfaveyoutube i mean it would be nice to not have sponsors but i mean that in the case that theres a sponsor in the video

The modern, “creepier” pasta ending: they send Joe into the cave first, he sees the hieroglyphs from an ancient civilization, and lays claim to them (finders keepers) going on to gain fame, fortune and notoriety while the two ex-friends who did all the excavating, are broke at home.
That's not a creepypasta, that's just Cal-Arts writing.

The "modern creepypasta" ending: They go into the cave, fall into a spooky fun house maze, see hieroglyphics covered in hyper realistic blood, and get killed by fluppus wuppus the marketable elsagate monster, and your sat there missing 30 more braincells
@@f-22raptorlandingzone30 lmao the marketable elsagate monster is good
If early internet creepypastas where written in modern days: at first you have an original fairly spooky atmospheric pasta, BUT THEN THERE IS MORE CONTENT WITH DIFFERENT CHARACTERS IN THE SAME LOCATION AND THERE IS ALSO A SCARY SPOOPY MONSTER THAT WANT'S TO KILL YOU, BUT THEN WE ADD LAYERS, MAKE THE LOCATION EVEN BIGGER, ADD EVEN MORE 2SPOOKY4ME MONSTERS YOU NEED TO RUN AWAY FROM, EVEN MORE LORE TO THEORIZE ABOUT, AND THEN WE MAKE INDIE HORROR GAMES ABOUT RUNNING AWAY FROM A SCARY MONSTER AND AN ANALOG HORROR SERIES BASED ON THE "LORE" THAT WILL BECOME THE NEXT "SCARIEST GUT-WRENCHING BALL-TWISTING TH-cam HORROR EVAR!!!". GOTTA ADD MORE AND MORE DUMB SHIT AND THEORY LORE SO THE ORIGINAL STORY IS NOW COMPLETELY UNRECOGNIZABLE.

At least we know now that Ted didn't get blasted by an Enderman!

Ted The Caver was truly an amazing piece of what Creepypastas should've been. I remember back when you used to visit the wiki way back when and god those were simpler times.
Respects for covering this, I haven’t thought about it in over 10 years
7:03 "Calling our passage tombs floyd" that poor tomb being floyd
I used to go caving in my younger days and I loved it - if my knees could handle it, I'd go again in a heartbeat, it's a whole different world down there.
There are 3 things to keep in mind when you do that:
- always check the gear before going in
- never, ever go in a cave alone. no matter how well you think you now the place
- always tell someone on the outside exactly where you are going
7:00 btw DeWalt's are really good, i recommend getting the 18V batteries with them. bought one for a deck project and while my Makita would only be able to drill through 1,5 poles before running out of battery and barely being able to go through, the Dewalt would go through those poles like butter.
Man I miss the days when your channel was fully focused on doing these creepypasta stories and games. The nostalgia hits hard.
Bro I’m hype, I loved your old Ted the caver creepypasta vid so my nostalgia is now unbound
I know when a creepypasta is good when it makes me feel physically sick with fear…this one was one of the few that has delivered!

I didnt even think there was much of a backstory or such a rabbithole around it, and I appreciate you making a video about it and diving into it
thanks for making the ad in the very beginning and not interrupting mid video
this is the kind of content i miss from muta. scary as shit when he does this
Ted the Caver still resides in my mind, which is a lot for someone that's extremely forgetful.
Holy shit man, thank you for the shout out! Been a fan of yours for a while now!
That Hodag reference threw me for a loop. It’s a popular mythical creature in northern Wisconsin. They’re an in joke amongst local Boy Scout circles and the northerners that even hold festivals in the monsters honor. Not found in caves as far as I’m aware, though they do live for thousands of years
It's so well written. Every detail every feeling is felt. Thrilling story
I feel like the way the story goes it's just not enough to say they copied anyone. Cave horror is as old as caves, and although its a good story, its pretty stock standard.

Been watching you since literally first grade muta, (im graduated now) loved the creepypasta content
I do like how they can take pictures from inside the cave
