As someone who crochets crochet is expensive but it really depends on the type of brand of yarn you're using like Walmart brand yarn that's probably like two maybe three dollars per ball and it actually feels pretty nice but they don't have a very big color selection the overall my favorite yarn brand is Caren

My mother is a yarn snob and she likes to go for the skeins of yarn that are around $20 to $25 per skein. She goes by feel per project. Me, my favorite is the Loops and Threads Soft and Shiny or the Simply Soft. $5 max per skein. I go by feel overall. Last haul I managed was 30 skeins for $90 and that included the $8 shipping fee.

@@jesfraz Michaels has a program called pro. It will let you pick up cases of yarn at discounted prices. Also the biggest tip anyone can give you is to buy all the yarn you will need for a project all at once. This way it will limit the likelihood of you getting different dye lots. If you do get different dye lots you'll be able to see the color variation and incorporate that into your design.

Crochet can be really expensive, especially when you're just starting out. Luckily, hooks are not consumables, and don't need to be replaced often. So later, you'll spend all your money on the fancy, hand dyed Indy yarns just to look at them on your shelf because you want to make something really special, but don't actually have any clue what that will be 😂

I’m the same but I’ve been crocheting now for over a year or 2. I go thru phases tho where I’ll try making the cute little stuffed animals, or I’ll spend weeks making hair scrunchies, months making granny squares, or I’ll get sucked into a cardigan pattern. My current obsession has been doilies. Like the little lace like circles people put on tables and stuff. I’ve been into bulky yarn or tiny thread. There’s so many things you can do with crochet so if you don’t get into a blanket you just try something else. I also love that crochet is commitment free. I will happily spend 3 days crocheting something just bc I like the process, it helps my anxious mind stay calm, just to unravel it right before it’s done bc I want to make something else.

It depends what are you making and for who it is. For example I don't like using acrylic if I make clothes for kids and babies, if you are making some bathroom cleaning suplies and face scrubs you need cotton, etc...also depends what time of year it is...if it's summer and I'm making a dress for myself ofcourse I wont use acrylic, mohair or alpaca lmao..

I don't know how everyone feels about this but if you're beginning out in the crochet world try to hit up your local thrift store. Most of the time (at least where i'm from) they'll have bundles of yarn for a couple dollars and its fun to play around with colors and textures and see what you like. Obviously this wouldn't work for big projects but if you're starting out or wanting to add to your collection of yarn, its a good place to start. I've found some good yarn there myself and totally recommend cause half the time its new yarn.

  • @KyaKramer

When teaching yourself to crochet using patterns, I recommend not only videos, but finding patterns that have both written instructions and a chart. It take a little time to learn the symbols for chart based instructions, but once you get it down, the written instructions will begin to make more sense when looking at a visual for where each stitch goes. There are a ton of great books out there for learning stitches. Also find kits to more expensive because you're generally paying significantly more for the yarn. You can get a lot of inexpensive to mid-range acrylic yarn at most craft stores, and I recommend using this while you learn.
Natural fiber yarn is fantastic for clothing, but it often costs more per skein than acrylic. Natural fiber also trends to come in a smaller weight and less yards per skein, so you end up needing to buy more skeins for a project.
    Happy crocheting!

Yes! Crafting of all sorts is expensive, materials and time!
    Random person sees me crochet
Them: “Hey, I love that will you make me one”
Me: uh sure, I guess. It cost $30 in yarn alone plus my time
Them: oh, I was thinking like $20. It can’t cost that much right? Just make it for me and I’ll post it to social media so you’ll get lots more orders
    Me: 😑
Me: no thank you, I do this for fun but not for free
Them: $&#*@ why’d you even offer in the first place if you’re going to be like that???

When I was getting into crocheting, I got most my supplies from the thrift store. Hooks, Looms, basic yarn, and cool speciality yarns. They usually came together in bundles, I always see bundles with knitting supplies too. It can help the cost of a new hobby and I like thinking the person who donated probably had experience the joy of the hobby too, so I like that I can continue it.

I learned from videos, to the point where I can now read most of the written patterns! At least in most occasions; there's no standard for written instructions so sometimes you find some that say weird stuff. I like to think that crochet is one of the more forgiving hobbies because you can undo mistakes and pick up where you left off, to a point of course.

This is what happens when people just dive into something without looking up a little bit or asking questions. Your first project should not be a blanket. It is so much work and it might even put you off the hobby. Start small. A hat, a scarf, a small spherical amigurumi or something. I've been crocheting for really long time and even I have a really hard time finishing blankets. God knows I have started hundreds, and then they become the work that I leave near a TV or something just so I can do it more mindlessly. I don't recommend that people start with clothes or blankets because they are both more complicated and they are longer projects that take up more time and you realize that it's not a quick Hobby. Crochet blankets are also very expensive because you use a lot of yarn. The problem with crochet being an expensive hobby is more that yarn can become anything and they make so many pretty Yarns and then all of a sudden you wake up one day and you have more yarn than you could ever crochet but you still want to buy more and that is where I am right now.

Not gonna lie I had to watch the slip knot part like 5 times before I got it but it was much easier for me to get than some of the long winded example videos I’ve seen before 🤣 you did it quick and I was able to visually follow along 🤩 I really enjoyed the videos from the woobles kits but I stopped at the eye part on my first project because I’m such a perfectionist 😭 now I’m going to try a dress because I tried a finger knitting blanket and that was too boring for me 😅🤣
The woobles kits were great for projects but they never explained how to do the slip knot or start your first few stitches 😤 you’re doing great work! 😝🥳🥳🥳🥳😍

Just from a brief glimpse, that's a great pattern to start with! Lots of practice for basic skills, each square is easy on its own, and stiching them together shouldn't be terrible. Also if you find that your later squares are much better quality than your first few, you can replace your first few squares before you put it together.
Anyway, yes it's an expensive hobby, especially when you add in the cost of your own time. And when you start getting into fancy yarns. But it gives you an appreciation for why handmade things are so darn expensive! And also teaches you first hand WHY you shouldn't ever buy fast fashion crochet, because all crochet is made by hand (knitting can be done by machine, but not crochet), which means the maker definitely did not get fairly compensated for their work

Yes, I remember the first time I read a crochet pattern and was just thinking, huh? It gets easier. Just wait until you realize that buying yarn is its own hobby once you discover all the pretty different types. Or Furls hooks, which are super expensive, but glide through yarn like butter. They keep your hands from cramping and will last a long time though so they're worth it for me. Then there's all the beautiful hand dyed yarns. Crochet is very therapeutic and has helped me so much. I hope you like it!
