Hyundai i10 Review - See why this spec is the most under-powered car I’ve ever driven!

- Recently I got given a courtesy car by Hyundai whilst my Santa FE had its service and it was a real whopper… the Hyundai i10 SE (the base spec one).
In this video I’ll tell you about my comedy experience of driving one for the day and why if you want to get an i10, you definitely should avoid this spec!

If you are used to driving large powerful cars then ok but you do get used to driving differently when you have less power. I found the I10 1 litre fine even on the motorway. The Hyundai I10 comes out of all reviews except yours with high praise.
That's because there's almost not a single review of it that is of the base spec and with the 1990s infotainment system. I tried my best to be clear that my issues were mainly with that particular spec and that in others it would be a better car.
I appreciate that you are warning people about the base model I10. Reviewers do say the smaller 1 litre engine is underpowered but in reality it has enough power . As mentioned, if you are used to more power you have to adjust and enjoy changing down when necessary. They do say the 1 litre 3 cylinder engine has a nicer character. The 2017 1 litre I10 I drove was a lovely little car all round. The " infotainment" system was an extremely good DAB+ radio (not an ordinary DAB radio) plus an mp3 player. i did not need a multi couloured touch screen to enjoy the radio , built in sat nav was the only thing missing.
Being a Sante Fe owner I’m not surprised you disliked this car. I actually own an SE Connect and it suits my needs exactly.
Yeah it was a culture shock but I gather the SE Connect is a big step up. What engine do you have?
@@car_babble the 3 cylinder 1 litre, but it’s well capable of 60-65mph cruising on the motorway, and for pottering around the City where I live.
@michaelkeen5010 definitely a city car. I never had it up to motorway speed with the time I had it but I wasn't encouraged to push it that far, if I'm honest. I guess if you don't care to over take you might just get by. Glad it works for you. The key thing is you've got the better infotainment in the SE Connect 😄
I have an i10 which I bought last October and I'm extremely impressed with it. I think you did the car a discredit by comparing it to larger vehicles, rather than reviewing it as a city car, which it is. Obviously coming from a Sante Fe, it's going to feel under powered but against other vehicles in the class, like the VW Up etc., it compares well. As you would not like the experience of an i10, I would be equally disappointed driving around in a Sante Fe ... horses for courses.
I think I made it clear that my issue with this car was in the base spec I was given i.e. with comically low power (which I made light of) and a terrible infotainment system, which has nothing to do with being a city car or not.
I don't think you have got the concept of a city car, most vehicles of the class have a similar 0 - 60s time. The Hyundai (66hp) i10 is 14.1s, Fiat 500 13.8s, Suzuki Ignis 13.8s, VW Up 13.9s, Toyota Aygo 14.8s, Kia Picanto 14.3s. The i10 was Auto Express city car of the year 2023 and Parker's give it a 9/10 rating and it's their second choice in the sector. So your 'comical' low power is basically the norm for this class of vehicle. I think your review could put people off what is a basic sound car, perhaps it is better to do reviews on a like for like basis.
Obviously the humorous element of this video didn't land with you, but I definitely acknowledged that it was more of a city car and the lack of power would be more of an issue... out of the city, but I still think any road car should have 100 BHP minimuim. Again, in higher specs, this is probably a fine wee car, but I recommend avoiding the base spec due to the 1990s infotainment.@@pompey174
I have driven the i10 as a hire car, and it was Ok to drive, had it at 100mph (once to test it out) on the motor way, did 400 miles in a weekend, liverpool to Shotts, did the job great.

I'm considering the 1.2 Premium model. I certainly wouldn't touch the base model either as the difference in price isn't huge as you mentioned. I completely agree with you when you say the small car segment thinks we are all about cost cutting, which simply isn't true. I want a city car that is nimble, economic and not the size of a bus, but with some style and substance. There's nothing worse than having to drive a car that has little more power than a sit-on lawnmower with an interior that is spartan and depressing.

He lost me when he said... i10 is even smaller than the old skool Mini.. then u know dis guy has a twisted sense of reality.. And 15k stock 25k Sky N Line is huge difference.. Dis guy smh
Firstly, I clearly use the word "probably" with reference to the i10 being smaller than an old mini. Clearly almost no modern car is smaller than an old mini, so my bad for not making my sarcasm more obvious and maybe you missed it, but in the context of owning a 7 seat SUV, the i10 feels a very small car because... it is.
And on the pricing, you're simply wrong, particularly for the UK market. The naming convention of the models has changed since filming and now the base model is called 'advance', which seems sadly ironic given what I said about the performance, but if you go to Carwow, for example, you will see it is priced from £15,420 for the manual. The top spec N Line Navigation is priced from £18,820.
I'm no mathematician but I would say that makes my statement plausibly accurate for the time of filming. Smh.
I had a 2008 i10 and it's an excellent car. 4 elec win, elec mirror, very, very roomy, you sit high up and get really good visibility. Very economical, cheap road tax, very nice car. Sure it will have some issues like every other car, but compared to its peers, it's a really good car, when driving on speed over 40mph it's stable and feels like a big car.
Only criticism is the ride is a bit hard.

@@car_babble 1.2 petrol. Comfort spec -- 4x elec windows, elec mirrors, a/c, alloys, etc. On low speed it's a bit bumpy, but speed of 40 onward it's surprisingly smooth. Manual notchy gearbox (but reverse gear is moody...lol )

You were lucky you didn't get the latest 2023/24 model - buyers of NEW cars should be very careful - The software installed in the latest version of Hyundai i10 to implement Intelligent Speed Limit Assist is unable to recognise the UK national speed limit sign. This means drivers of the new i10 get repeated audible speed limit warnings (very annoying and distracting) when they drive on a road where the national speed limit applies (Motorway, dual carriageway or single carriageway) as the car does not recognise the national speed limit sign and will assume the previous speed limit sign still applies (e.g. 30 / 40 or 50 mph). My Hyundai dealership has requested a software update from Hyundai but they do not know when this will be received (nor did the dealership warn me about the problem before I bought my new car). Carparks with speed limits (5 or 10mph) are also a BIG problem as there is normally no sign when you exit the carpark so the car still thinks the 5/ 10mph speed limit applies on the road. You then get an audible speed limit warning every time the car exceeds 5/10mph until the camera sees a new speed limit sign. This can be several miles later if the carpark is located within a 30mph zone. If there are multiple sets of traffic lights / roundabouts before the new speed limit sign the driver will get repeated warnings every time the car exceeds 5/ 10mph even though the correct speed limit is 30mph. I have to drive 2.5 miles with over 20 audible speed limit warnings before the car's camera sees another speed sign and reverts to the correct speed limit. This is extremely distracting and spoils what would otherwise be a great little car. Speed Limit Assist can be disabled, but requires scrolling through multiple menu options which should not be attempted while driving and turns back on every time the engine is started. Until this is resolved by Hyundai I would buy an older model - not a 2023/24 model.

Your review is so out of date already it's embarrassing, the new spec basic model has already upped it's game and nothing like the car you got, p.s. Jeremy Clarkson's job is safe
