I love mine. Had it for a few years now and flattened a few hundred records. Bought the heat pouch as well. Overall - a product I cannot live without. It's as important as a record cleaning machine. In my findings it actually takes 6-8 hours to flatten and, in some cases, much much more but still worth it!
I actually made my own Vinyl Flat. I had a local sheet metal shop cut me 2 13 inch circles. $20. I did order the Groovy Pouch and the Groovy Rings from Vinyl Flat though. So far, I’ve fixed about 40 records successfully!!! Just takes P A I T E N C E!!
Thank you. My website has been around since 1999. It's in dire need of an overhaul as the format is very old-school. Thanks for watching and subscribing.
I might buy this I recieved a misprint copy of KISS Rock And Roll Over with the tear drop on Paul Stanley's eye and the record has a warp, I Want You and Love 'Em Leave 'Em jump quite a bit it even jumped a few times on Take Me.
"You have to make sure it's clean.... and of course it's not!" ...Spoken like a true collector, who actually plays his records, rather than just leaving 'em in the plastic, haha! Good man! Very interesting review, I appreciate the detail... and given that my B&O can track just about anything, I'm not likely to make the investment myself. I'd be doing it more because big warps piss me off than because I have trouble playing 'em. The moral of the story: Don't leave your records sealed!! haha
Metal Theologian Exactly. I bought several "mint, still sealed" albums from the 80's and they all look exactly like the one I showed in the video. Annoying! Nice Christmas present from my daughter though. It will get used.
I decided to get one and try it after watching your video. This thing is great, I've flattened three records (recently bought) all on the first try. It definitely a valuable tool in case your run across a warped record.
Hi Scott. Thankfully worked! I think it´s a very nice tool for warped records, had the same opinion when I saw Greeno´s video. Hope you find the right way for every warped record really soon. Thank you so much for sharing!
I've been flatting my warped records with two sheets of glass... You know, from unused frames. Place the record between the glass and let it lay out in the sun for a couple of minutes. Works like a charm. Record flat comes across like a gimmick to me. Glad you like it. KISS RULES!!!
Glad to know it works... sooner or later. Thanks for posting about this. Never even thought there would be an actual solution to this problem other than tossing the record.
Good to hear that this thing works! I only have a few albums that are warped-however, one of them is that rare Sanctuary/Fifth angel interview album. I would really like to get that fixed someday
I have practically the same Technics turntable SL-Q350 and looks the same. Have you ever had issue with the arm not coming down when you use autoplay? That black plastic piece that pushes it up doesn't go down so wonder if I need to lube something after all these years of this thing sitting in the attic.
I'm guessing by flattening the record with heat, it has slightly changed the shape of the record. The grooves have actually been changed a bit and now sway or ripple back and forth to compensate for the hight adjustment by flattening the record. Basically, if you can't UN-WARP the record the exact same way it was warped (which is physically impossible) you will end up with many different audible/physical results. The more narrow and steep the warp is (like the record you have) the more audible the changes to the grooves will be. A wider, less steep warp would have better results. NOW, having said ALL THAT. You basically took a record which was garbage and made it (at least) listenable, which is the only scenario when this thing should be used. So hey, no harm, no fowl. BUT, I would avoid using it JUST for the sake of flattening any record with a slight warp as you could potentially make the listening experience of the LP worse rather than better.
Your last paragraph is basically the way it is. If a record is unusable it will at least make it playable. It could never make a record perfect and can in fact make it much worse. I've mostly had success but there have been a few where it didn't work at all (esp. edge warp) and the record had to be tossed.
Glad you got it to work. It takes some trial and error but it works. And it looks like each heat bag is a little different, so our times may vary. I've never had to cook a record for more than 3... maybe 3 1/2 hours. Just keep playing with it (on records you don't mind wrecking, haha) and you will get your timing down. Great video bro!
It worked! I wonder if a gradual warp is easier to repair than a "sharp" warp like I see here? Thanks for the video, I plan to invest in one but I end up buying records instead!
I've gotten decent results with the 2 glass trick or the blow dryer heat on record sitting on marble, them glass and weight applied, but all this only worked with those nice gradual wraps, even if high as a hill. But any kind of sharp warp in a smaller spot, especially the edge, forget about it.
hi scott... I Buyed a Ozzy "bark at the moon" sealed first edition, but had been warped ( lower in relation to the lp show in the video) ... try for 6 hours first with vinyl flat and then 12 hours without any result, the lp continued with the same warped, greetings from Chile.
Toño P Are you using the heat bag? I have great results using the vinyl flat in the heat bag. It doesn't fix every record, but it seems to work most of the time.
Scott Waters Now tryed with a vinyl of Montrose with similar warped that the Ozzy without any result (10 hours in the heat bag)...both lps was buyed sealed ,have a tipycal warped of new vinyl with 30 or more years old
Scott Waters Temperature after 1 hour within the heat bag is 55º Celsius, the temperature is correct to a good work? (Taken with a oven thermometer) ,greetings
Unfortunately it most certainly can over time. I’ve seen it many many times and it sucks! However there is also something to be said of having it stored properly.
Scott Waters ok thanks for the reply beck scot, I’m a new collector and only have 2,I think that are unopened angel and megadeth , both are signed editions , but I will open them tonight , there like 4 years old so , I might still be ok , definitely not sealed from the 80s
Scott Waters a lot of the vinyl I buy direct from bands or at record stores is warped a little right of the plastic?? , most will play just fine , but sadly I just got the danzig sings Elvis vinyl from cleopatra records and it was warped and skipping right out of the plastic they quickly sent me a replacement and it did the same thing , so I’m dealing with them now , when they start skipping on multiple songs I consider that unplayable , I don’t want to mess up my player by playing defective vinyl . Have you dealt with warped skipping vinyl on new releases right out of the plastic??
I'm considering buying one. what if I just leave it in the flat without cooking it? I know the process would be longer but I don't mind waiting 3 to 4 days
+TimeBombVids Without the heat it could take weeks or months, according to the directions. I've heard people put it in their garage in the summer for a few house and it seems to work that way too.
Did you notice the fact that the system works terrible during winter? this of course if your house doesn't have heating. In my country where the weather isn't very extreme, we don't need heating systems for winter but the Vinyl Flat works very bad for most of the heat dispels out of the press leaving it just warm and not as hot as it use to be during summer. The solution for me? well it's simpler than it seems: i put the pouch and the press inside a cooler box and it works perfectly...even hotter than summer!
Hey, Scott! Thank you for the vinyl flat review. Looks like it's going to take a little practice :-) I still may buy one. I've become a bit reluctant to buy sealed records from the seventies and eighties because, at least in my limited experience, they do tend to be warped. My sealed vinyl purchases of Krokus "The Blitz", Black N Blue "Without Love" and Lizzy Borden "Menace to Society" were all warped. ARGH!
Yes, I am also reluctant to buy "sealed" records from the 70's and 80's. The record I fixed in the video was one such album. Sealed for 30 years and sold as "mint", I was disappointed when it arrived and was so warped it was unplayable. Those records you have all sound like good candidates for the Vinyl Flat. Thanks for watching.
I really love your channel. When you show something, you're not bragging about it and you don't have that look how cool I am for having all this. You're just showing it off and going look how cool this record is or how cool this band is. Where as a lot of people are like look at my collection and how cool I am for having it. LOL keep on rocking #Scott
Thank you. I know for a fact I am a geek, so I don't pretend to be cool. I'm just a huge fan of the music and love collecting. Thanks for the encouraging words.
I have a few 45s I'd like to get fixed. The problem is, they have severe edge warps. These are usually caused when a record is left out in the sun. Is this machine worth ordering for that kind of problem?
+chuckdee66 You know I've never tried it on a 7" singles. However, on 12" vinyl the edge warps seems to be the hardest to get out. I"ve had zero success getting out the edge warps.
chuckdee66 A friend said he had luck putting them between two pieces of ceramic tile with felt between the tile and the record and heating it up in his hot garage in the summer. Could give it a try. You have nothing to lose.
Thanks for sharing this video, I have a brand new re released King Diamond "The Graveyard" LP that I actually felt bad taking it back again to the record store who exchanged the 1st copy that was warped and the opening track on each side was skipping like crazy but the second copy didn't fair better so again I felt bad taking it back and decided to keep the thing and BTW both pieces were sealed, thanks again for the video, I'm gonna have to get me one of these.
The one thing I could see about improving this might be 2 more screws on the outside where the "tabs" are to make the outside edge of the LP flatter. Theres not extra pressure to the outside.
Would you put your 1978 AC/DC If You Want blood Multicolor Vinyl Netherlands pressing LTD to 500 worth $3000 that has a slight center warp in that contraption?
Slight warp? No. Major warp that makes it unplayable? Definitely. There is always a change of ruining the record but if it’s already unplayable its worth the gamble.
Very interesting video, Scott! Vinyl Flat is one of those "gadgets" that once you buy it you hope that you'll never have to use it. :) So far I've been pretty lucky with my vinyl. I think I only have one vinyl LP that is too warped so I'm not gonna get Vinyl Flat yet. Time warp - NOT, Jarkko / MyVinylBar
Exactly! However, I do have 4 or 5 records I am looking forward to fixing, including the one I showed in the video. Thanks for watching and commenting Jarkko.
Current 2020 instructions say start at One hour fifteen minutes. If that doesn't work, add 15 minutes and try again. Keep adding 15 minutes until you see improvement, than add 5 minutes per try until the record is playable. I have had a couple of records flatten in 1:15. 1:45 to 2:15 is more common. I've only had one that took as long as four hours. I have not had any records it would not improve. I've had the Record Flat and Pouch for about four months. It has paid for itself many times over. For $215, its a no-brainer.
Ha! Leige Lord Burn To My Touch...you got that from oldies.com didnt you! I just spent over $100 on records from that website and like 6 or 7 of them were warped just like this. I got the Obsession Methods of Madness LP too and it even had a 2 inch long crack in it! I tried the method of heating it up in the oven between two sheets of glass but I think I used too much heat or something because its flat now but it still doesn't track properly, the tone arm jiggles around like a seismograph recording an earthquake
I think instead of putting the record in the device in the oven would be to put it in the device after it has been heated. And let it cool on the counter. Just a thought.
On almost all of my records there is at least a very slight warp, I can't really tell from listening but the needle still moves up and down on the record especially on the thinner pressings I have. Is this affecting sound quality and I just don't realize it? And is there any way to completely fix a warped record without damaging/altering the grooves?
There is no way to completely fix a warp without effecting the album. There are those turntable toppers the you can put on top of the record that will flatter the slight warp when its playoff. To be honest I don't think a slight warp really effects the sound.
I think the more you make the vinyl wait under the heat the more it's sound distorts. Don't know for sure but it may be better to put some weight on it for flattening.
The heat bag seems to work ok as long as you use it for a max of 2 - 4 hours. It doesn't get super hot, just warm. I've had good luck for the most part. However, I have completely ruined a few records. (Of course they were already ruined by a warp.)
So do I. Have the SL-Q350 I just pulled out. For some reason the arm isn't coming down on autoplay and trying to see what I can do. Been 25 years in the attic and ready to roll again.
Edge warps are much more difficult to fix. I've been told using multiple binder clips all around will help with edge warps. I've also seen people using s small piece of felt between the metal and the felt at the location of the edge warp.
What album is this? It's keewl beans. The walls of the grooves rippled a bit, it seems. I imagine that's a potential hazard. But I imagine you may end up with a black vinyl tortilla if you get impatient and crank the oven up to 400. I left my vinyl copy of Madonna's True Blue a wee too close to a space heater; it kinda warped gently all over. Oh, well.
Through trial and error, I think I may have it down. Depending on the warp, I usually do 30 minutes on 150 degrees in the oven, sandwiched between 2 heavy tiles and some felt. First one was the Heavy Metal cartoon soundtrack - I wasted disc one as I had it on too high and for too long. It literally flattened the grooves, so the needle couldn't even fit into them anymore. But the second one I did, a lame throw-away album as a tester, came out perfect ! I have a Phil Keaggy that's warped, I'm gonna try the oven again. Wish me luck ! haha !!
+Scott Waters (ultmetal) Having the Vinyl Flat and bag is cool cuz you can't "over do" it. Problem I've had with the oven is over heating it... has to be just right.
+Scott Waters (ultmetal) Oh shoot ! I didn't know that. I just figured it was a temperature that was warm enough to bend vinyl, but not hot enough to melt... bummer !
Haha! Right on! I knew someone would catch on to that goofy intro. Thanks for noticing. I actually find Bunny quite entertaining doing those "Does This Thing Really Work" clips.
I will check those out man...and yeah I think we're all music geek's lol...you seem really cool tho, without the I'm the greatest thing. I mean, look you're always shouting out others collection's. lol....I've checked out a few of your suggestions and really liked them. it's hard to find good hard rock music these days. Everyone either wants to rap or if they do rock want to "sing" like a demon lol. so thanks for the channel. I think everyone can tell how much you love the music. it comes out in the way you talk about it and that's something you can't fake. Metal fans can spot a fake and I believe that's why you have a loyal fanbase.
I'd love to fix that DiMeola record. Send it to me next time you send some records and I'll fix it. I feel bad I sent you a warped record to begin with.
Air Supply? No. Sorry. But you can always find new copies in the dollar bins. :-) Yes, $120 is pricey. I bought mine a few years ago during a sale and it was less than that and it came with the heat bag.
Brian Newell I collect both. CDs can get rot though. I have thousands of CDs and have been collecting since the mid-80s and have had three go bad for no particular reason.
Earth is Flat , like a Vynil disc ... Scott , if you wondered where am I in Facebook , I just deleted my account there . Too much censorSHIT of opinions on that Platform , I just grew tired of that ...
Yes, I have destroyed a couple records, but they were unplayable to begin with so no big loss. I have also saved many records from the trash. It's not full-proof for sure.
Considering the high cost for this "product", around 120 USD, I just watched a video online where a guy achieved better results with under $10 worth of materials from Home Depot. Two large, smooth ceramic tiles. This just looks like a waste of money to me. If they want to improve the product, add 4 tightening screws at each end.
I'm sorry but until u honor Spinal Tap you aren't a true metal head. How can you leave out the true fathers of LOUD metal? Who else had 20 on their Marshall amps? Not Sabbath, Dio, Maiden, Pat Boone.
+steven majewski Does it matter what turntable is used to check for a warp? The fact is, the record was warped, the Vinyl Flat fixed the warp. That particular turntable is from the 1980's and was hardly an over-priced piece of junk, but thanks for the comment.
I've been reading your website on and off for over 10 years cool to see you are still around and have a youtube channel.
Thank you. My website has been around since 1999. It's in dire need of an overhaul as the format is very old-school. Thanks for watching and subscribing.
I believe an online friend told me about your website circa 2002 or so but I can't remember for sure so I gave the rough estimate of 10+ years.
I might buy this I recieved a misprint copy of KISS Rock And Roll Over with the tear drop on Paul Stanley's eye and the record has a warp, I Want You and Love 'Em Leave 'Em jump quite a bit it even jumped a few times on Take Me.

Metal Theologian Exactly. I bought several "mint, still sealed" albums from the 80's and they all look exactly like the one I showed in the video. Annoying! Nice Christmas present from my daughter though. It will get used.
Some people like Vynil more for the looks than sound itself . I think I wouldn´t play any of My Vynils if I collected some ...
I decided to get one and try it after watching your video. This thing is great, I've flattened three records (recently bought) all on the first try. It definitely a valuable tool in case your run across a warped record.
how long did it take to flatten each vinyl?

It does work. It's a cool tool.

+The Phantom It might be a gimmick, but it works. It was a gift, so I can't really complain about the price.
The Phantom in the sun?? Not a good idea.

I really need to get one of these. Thanks for putting together the review. Have you tried using the oven to see the difference in time?

Are you still using it? Have you ever overcooked a record?
I do still use it and yea I have ruined a few albums.
Cool vid. I've never seen one of these before. I learned about something new today. Cheers, Frank
Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting Frank. I'm just glad it worked. Would have been one expensive hunk of metal otherwise.
Glad you got it to work. It takes some trial and error but it works. And it looks like each heat bag is a little different, so our times may vary. great video, great device, the link is no longer working tho. What is the model and brand please?
It worked! I wonder if a gradual warp is easier to repair than a "sharp" warp like I see here? Thanks for the video, I plan to invest in one but I end up buying records instead!
The entire thing is just under $200 (for the flat and the bag). It was an awesome gift from my daughter.

Thanks for your video Scott ! Where can i buy this item it seems cool and i have some records to repair. Heavy Metal rules. I am from France.

Thanks Carsten. It works, so that is cool.

+Scott Waters (ultmetal) That sounds like it might work. I might just give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
I've had albums arrive new, sealed and warped so I know where you are coming from.
Just ordered both the vinyl flat and the groovy pouch, now the waiting game is on!
The one thing I could see about improving this might be 2 more screws on the outside where the "tabs" are to make the outside edge of the LP flatter. Theres not extra pressure to the outside.
+Lee Spears I sometimes use binder clips if I have a very weird warp on only one side of the record. The extra screws aren't a bad idea.
I have a white label promo pressing of Too fast for love that is warped that I would love to try in a vinyl flat.
I've used my VF at 30x now. I've been able to fix about 20 of the 30. The other 10 the VF wasn't able to fix or made them completely unplayable.
Are the internal felt mats like the same kind of felt mats that go on the platter of a record player?
Would you put your 1978 AC/DC If You Want blood Multicolor Vinyl Netherlands pressing LTD to 500 worth $3000 that has a slight center warp in that contraption?

How Much Is It? & Where To I Buy It, Amazon? eBay?

I did.
SWEET JESUS. that's an awesome room. I hope one day my bedroom will look like that.
Thanks.

I've had the Record Flat and Pouch for about four months. It has paid for itself many times over. For $215, its a no-brainer.
The noise might be from static build up. Try laying a dryer sheet or two on the record for a few minutes.
What kind of fabric is that inside the vinylflat?
Its some sort of felt.
Friend Scott! PLEASE HELP! Where can i buy one like this???????
TheGroovyyyy
vinylflat.com/
Yes, you got it. I no longer order from that site. I can't even tell you the nightmare I had with my credit card with them as well.
pressure added some static from the felt?
Wish you the best of luck then :)
Mehmet Kunter Erener it takes over a month without heat.
Would this work on 7'' records?
It works on 7" and 10" records as well.
nice review thanks I was really curious to see how well it works. peace!
+Behren Valiukas Yes sir. Thank for commenting.
I have almost the exact same turn table! Good turntable
TheMartin1242 Technics turntables are the Best!
Thanks for the tips kethdredd.
Thanks for the demo. One of these days I might Invest In one.---Colin
Not a bad price. I think it sells for around $119 including shipping.
What album is this?
Very cool. You should get some commission from the vinyl flat people!
Haha! I should send the link to them. Thanks for watching.
NIce vid. Love the Deliverance T-Shirt too!
Just got one. It WORKS.
Oh, well.
+Noah Mcallister The album is Liege Lord - Burn to My Touch on Metal Blade.
Thankee
I would love to have Scott's record collection. it's pretty impressive. METAL
If you haven't seen BioCyte's or Greeno's channels, check them out. Their collections trump mine.
Does this thing really woooooork
Haha. Indeed it does.
+Scott Waters (ultmetal) yeah after 7 hours
Mehdi Saad regardless. It WORKED.
haha bro I watch graveyard girl with my daughter so that intro had me DYING!!
x5079x I was watching her a lot when I did this video. She is fun to watch.
Yeah she sure is bro
Great review I was really curious about this thing.
+inertlife Thank you. Appreciate the comment.
Wish me luck ! haha !!
Nice. I don't use the oven. I bought the heat bag.
+Scott Waters (ultmetal) Having the Vinyl Flat and bag is cool cuz you can't "over do" it. Problem I've had with the oven is over heating it... has to be just right.
+Guilty Forgiven You can overdo it with the Vinyl Flat as well. I know that from experience...unfortunately.
+Scott Waters (ultmetal) Oh shoot ! I didn't know that. I just figured it was a temperature that was warm enough to bend vinyl, but not hot enough to melt... bummer !
Can someone tell me why my Rega p3 sounds like a fireplace?
What's the title of the record you fixed ?
Liege Lord - Burn to My Touch
I enjoy your videos man. I like the fact that you end them off with a "God Bless" too. People tend to shy away from their faith these days.
Thank you. I don't shy away from my faith. It's who I am so if people don't like it, they don't have to watch. Thanks for the kind comment.
My groovy pouch does not heat evenly, has anyone else had this problem?
i use a michel record clamp instead
This was uploaded on my birthday. Nice vid by the way.
+N.K. Revolution Thank you and happy belated birthday, or considering it's nearly here again, how about an early happy birthday. :-)
Scott Waters Thank you :D
Nice bunny impression!
Haha! Right on! I knew someone would catch on to that goofy intro. Thanks for noticing. I actually find Bunny quite entertaining doing those "Does This Thing Really Work" clips.
what album is that
Liege Lord - Burn to My Touch
hey scott remember the ronco record cleaner it sheared the edge of my record off lol
Thanks again. Appreciate the vote of confidence.
Hey cool you got one!!! Can I send u my DiMeola back now! LOL!!! Actually I have a few more. How much do you charge for service? LOL
I'd love to fix that DiMeola record. Send it to me next time you send some records and I'll fix it. I feel bad I sent you a warped record to begin with.
That device costs over $120 ! Uh, no thanks. BTW, will this work with my Air Supply collection ?
Air Supply? No. Sorry. But you can always find new copies in the dollar bins. :-)
Yes, $120 is pricey. I bought mine a few years ago during a sale and it was less than that and it came with the heat bag.
very cool man, thats a great item to have.
Thanks Rick. It is a cool item, especially because it actually works. Haha! It would have just been an expensive hunk of metal is it didn't.
lol yeah for sure
My same exact Liege Lord album has the same warp! Hahah
I guess you could say the Vinyl Flat fell flat ...
+rekor Haha! I guess so. Haha! Actually the Vinyl Flat works most of the time.
you might be also be able to sous vide a pork belly in that bag, to eat with the second listen
Good show Dude!
omg you look like a pro wrestler! fucking right
Thanks.
it's called a wingnut...fyi
Lip warps are a pain
what is it about shit gramophone?
Eduard Kaspel what do you prefer?
After nearly 50 years of collecting vinyl I discovered that CD's never warp. Thank you but I ain't going back. Wanna buy some records?
Brian Newell I collect both. CDs can get rot though. I have thousands of CDs and have been collecting since the mid-80s and have had three go bad for no particular reason.
Brian Newell ????
Brian Newell yes. I’ll buy your records.
Pre heat first lol
Earth is Flat , like a Vynil disc ... Scott , if you wondered where am I in Facebook , I just deleted my account there . Too much censorSHIT of opinions on that Platform , I just grew tired of that ...
Soooo happy to have dumped vinyl and gone to CD years ago!
Have NEVER looked back!
tripjet999 cd’s have their own issues.
Btw-vinyl is doing VERY WELL at the moment.
Just completely destroyed a record with this thing.
Yes, I have destroyed a couple records, but they were unplayable to begin with so no big loss. I have also saved many records from the trash. It's not full-proof for sure.
....even tho you said you hate Chicago LoL..
LET's GO FLYERS! GO KINGS GO!
I bought it when it was half price. It's worked fairly well for me but I agree adding a few screws would help with edge warps.
I'm sorry but until u honor Spinal Tap you aren't a true metal head. How can you leave out the true fathers of LOUD metal? Who else had 20 on their Marshall amps? Not Sabbath, Dio, Maiden, Pat Boone.
I would never, ever do this to any record!! The noise your hearing is more than most likely melted grooves! This product is a scam piece of shit!!
Tobin Mummert it’s not a scam. If a warped record is unplayable this product will make it playable. Hardly a scam.
That is a tiny warp and it skips because you have a crappy turntable. Those turntables are overpriced junk.
+steven majewski Does it matter what turntable is used to check for a warp? The fact is, the record was warped, the Vinyl Flat fixed the warp. That particular turntable is from the 1980's and was hardly an over-priced piece of junk, but thanks for the comment.
*****
It was Liege Lord - Burn to My Touch.
Geez dude point the camera at the things you're trying to demonstrate!
