I was expecting Mark Rosewater to actually look at Kathleen's hand, have a frustrated look on his face, and go "these cards are ridiculous! Who thought this was a good idea?!"
Incredible. I love this episode. I half expected a "The Office"-esque jingle to play over the opening cast card title credits rather than the usual theme too.
This is fantastic, one of the best yet. Though I feel bad for Cam's accidental injury, it does add a little special something to know that Kathleens reaction wasn't acting :3
It took me a second to catch that. I like how their black board walker cards are silly and ridiculous and their silver boardered ones are serious.... rofl
I like how the silver border crew based planeswalkers are actually technically playable as opposed to the normal ones, well, maybe except for Paul's ult.
I do appreciate how the FN silver bordered cards for the Unstable episode are properly templated and playable, while the standard FN black bordered cards for all other episodes are joke cards with effects like Trampoline.
I loved the The Office treatment for this episode, and I think it worked especially well for this episode, but I wouldn't want to see it all or even most of the time; I much prefer the usual Friday Nights feel. Maybe use it once in awhile?
Shan Judo Yeah, this "talk to the camera" style was first I believe pioneered by The Office, I think also is used in Arrested Development, and currently used by Modern Family among others past and present. Read some of the other comments; others have listed these and more shows.
The office style works best for telling a story that happened, not one that is happening. I wouldn't want every episode to be like this but I'd be fine with more like it so long as it's always about things that happened.
The medium is referred to as "Mockumentary" basically as it sounds, its a fake documentary where the cameras are acknowledged by the characters. The Office is the most well known example but many others have come before and after. While there are talking heads (speaking to the camera) on the show Modern Family, it is only half a mockumentary because outside of the talking heads they do not acknowledge the camera.
as someone who had simultaneously twisted my left and sprained my right ankles just a few weeks ago seeing Cam knock his ankle on a table corner a couple times actually just really hurt.
when you discover (from desert bus) that cam is supposed to hurt himself on the table at the end there but he actually did and graham had to mute the scene in post to cover the laughter, although not from cam who a, is trying to not ruin the scene, and b, in a lot of pain
This was amazing. Having been watching Desert Bus, Fugi and Joe's cameos were great, and I loved the mockumentary style. Plus, the new planeswalker cards were perfect.
Based on the color identities and very roughly the abilities, the Planeswalker cards seem to be inspired by real planeswalkers: Graham is Nahiri, the Harbinger; James is Nissa, Kahtleen is Liliana, Alex is Chandra, Cameron is Jace, Missie is Ajani and Paul is Ugin.
The stack: laughter of the cameraman, Kathleen reacts, Cams shin hits the table, gloating over win by opponent conceding, James decides it’s not worth it to be involved any more - guess in the end you could say... it resolved
Wow this episode was a lot more random then usual, and considering the antics these guys get into constantly (like going into the woods to study Ixalan or Drafting with tokens) that's saying something.
so am I the only one whos noticed that the descriptions for some of these videos says Paul rather than Alex, specifically for the parts of the stories involving Alex? like the descriptor for this episode says that PAUL is the one who goes through the SPOILERS mental breakdown over the Hydradoodle when it's ALEX that goes through it.
Anyone else notice that the planeswalkers at the beginning actually seemed semi playable this time. Odd, isn't it. It's like this is an "un" version of their normally silly Planeswalker cards.
Hey guys! Remember the White Loxodon exchange episode? In the opening credits, the Graham card had last strike! LRR PREDICTED AN UNHINGED MECHANIC. OF COURSE IT WAS THEM!
BEST EPISODE FOR SO LONG- shame there was no Graham, but finally we are getting some mtg-focused episodes: these jokes were actually magic related and were really funny. This episode was much more like the very first episodes of Friday nights, and I love it!!
...anyone else stop to read the un-planeswalkers, and realized they are real actual abilities? Cept for paul's ultimate, the meta-humor on that is pretty good.
I like that the sliver-boarded planeswalkers in the intro are, at least until pauls one, just fair (maybe underpowered) normal looking planeswalkers with nothing funny going on.
It's only 2 and a half years late, but Alex finally got his Burn spell with Trample in Black-Border, thanks to Ikoria!
And 2 more brushwaggs! (Ikoria and playtest)
Exactly what I was going to say!
Canlander playable!
except it can't pave their jace :(
Well neither could super duper death ray honestly. But now I just wanna know who wrote Alex to be this sad 😔
Lol Cam totally hit his shin on accident there, what a perfect shot
TastySnackies by accident*
That was sooo good cuz the camera man was trying to hold it back too hahaha
Yea, I immediately thought Kathleen's reaction was too.... "normal" Kathleen for that to be scripted.
Priceless.
It certainly very realistic.
*watches the beginning, sees shakey camera* hmm did their budget go down?
*sees The Office format* OOHHHH OK
I highly valued the slow, dawning realization about the joke of those Planeswalker cards.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I know, right? I was legitimately unsettled by their normalcy. When I saw the last ability on Paul, I genuinely did Cam's short "Ah!" shout.
The joke is that they're silver bordered and normal, while the usual intro cards are black bordered and weird?
Bwahahaha, the Un-Versions of their Planeswalker cards all have boring ass normal abilities... Love it!
Most of them... Paul has "Destroy Target Player" as his Ult. (Which is on an actual Unstable card, admittedly.)
mowdownjoe Also it's pretty much the design of Door to Nothigness before the Rules Manager got his hands on it...
Max Power I wouldn't necessarily call them normal because of how much they suck
I mean, I'd run unPaul in Doubling Season or in Tron.
I would.
I will never get over Cameron slamming his shin on the table and slumping over and Kathleen looking stunned and horrified like "oh god did he died"
I was expecting Mark Rosewater to actually look at Kathleen's hand, have a frustrated look on his face, and go "these cards are ridiculous! Who thought this was a good idea?!"
I just realized Kathleen's "the best way to win is not to lose" is a callback to Marshall's "Don't lose" advice in the Hero's Path episodes
Unscripted ending FOR THE WIN
ALEX. WAS. SO. GOOD. IN. THIS. v good ep
"Is that why you don't play green, because the creatures are too good?" lel
This comment age well
Did Cam really hurt himself at the end???
Yuuuuuuup.
Suck it De Vere!
You can tell by that noise and Kathleens response. Oof. Glad hes ok. That must of sucked.
replying 3 years later but you can tell the cameraman is laughing by the really shaky camera lol
Replying 3 years late but yes. He confirmed it during a Desert Bus
Related to absolutely nothing, I really liked Missie's sweater.
sanityisrelative agreed, it looks comfy
''ha ha suck it de vere!'' this quote completely saved this episode for me, something about cam calling a friend by their surname just gets me
This is my first episode of this, it might just be my new favorite show.
“Decoy Octopus!?”
Respect for the MSG reference, LRR.
yeah boii, gotta reference that monosodium glutamate fo sho!
Best. Episode. Ever
This is literally Arrested Development for magic! I love it
A bit more The Office.
This is literally The Office for magic.
Michael Murphy I think the lack of narration is the difference between the two
Arrested Development didn't talk to the audience, The Office did.
EverCry TCG "I would not be caught DEAD in a sit com." - Graham Stark 2017
Is the joke that they have totally normal cards in the intro during the unstable set?
yep
I'd like to think that ending was legit and they kept it in there because it was too hilarious to cut out.
same
Incredible. I love this episode.
I half expected a "The Office"-esque jingle to play over the opening cast card title credits rather than the usual theme too.
"Hey do you want to play magic inside this van for like 5 minutes?" um nooo
But, but... They also have candy!
TheRealWormbo this might be wrong, but is it weird that I got certain porn site vibes from that shot
Yes! GIVE ME SOME CANDY!!!
FREE CANDY
This is fantastic, one of the best yet. Though I feel bad for Cam's accidental injury, it does add a little special something to know that Kathleens reaction wasn't acting :3
Kathleen
Who doesn't like candy.....
....Monsters
Cameron:
I don't like candy
It killed me
kathleen
I thought the intro seemed weird, and then I saw the silver border LRR planeswalkers and everything clicked.
I didn't even SEE the silver borders!
I did notice they were surprisingly not ridiculous... except for Paul's, his was pretty bonkers
It took me a second to catch that. I like how their black board walker cards are silly and ridiculous and their silver boardered ones are serious.... rofl
suck it De Vere ! Rofl
"We have all these people in town to help us for Desert Bus!"
"Let's use them as props!"
I can't wait to see the Loading Time for this episode!
Wow, you guys even nailed the weird awkward moments as well, that's amazing!
The Kathleen bit starting at 9.46 - 9.47.. That's one of the best impersonations of the Prof. I've seen. :D
I like how the silver border crew based planeswalkers are actually technically playable as opposed to the normal ones, well, maybe except for Paul's ult.
I'd say destroy target player is playable. As long as you have a weapon.
I do appreciate how the FN silver bordered cards for the Unstable episode are properly templated and playable, while the standard FN black bordered cards for all other episodes are joke cards with effects like Trampoline.
I think Graham loosing his shit at the end was just icing on the cake
I loved the The Office treatment for this episode, and I think it worked especially well for this episode, but I wouldn't want to see it all or even most of the time; I much prefer the usual Friday Nights feel. Maybe use it once in awhile?
So that was why it was so weird, its taken from another show?
Shan Judo Yeah, this "talk to the camera" style was first I believe pioneered by The Office, I think also is used in Arrested Development, and currently used by Modern Family among others past and present. Read some of the other comments; others have listed these and more shows.
Awesome thanks for the heads up, i never watch TV, while i have heard of these shows never really bothered to watch them. Thank you my dude!!
The office style works best for telling a story that happened, not one that is happening. I wouldn't want every episode to be like this but I'd be fine with more like it so long as it's always about things that happened.
The medium is referred to as "Mockumentary"

While there are talking heads (speaking to the camera) on the show Modern Family, it is only half a mockumentary because outside of the talking heads they do not acknowledge the camera.
Best part is Cam hitting his knee, Kathleen's reaction told us how real that was haha
I wonder what Alex’s reaction was to the Jellyfish Hydra Beast?
Ivan Niezgocki this is the ultimate question
Lol, so good. I wish Friday nights happened more often.
Best PW cards ever on a Friday Nights. All legit abilities, nothing unusable. Only the last ability on Paul's card winks to the audience.
"Decoy Octopus!" Alright! Metal Gear!
as someone who had simultaneously twisted my left and sprained my right ankles just a few weeks ago seeing Cam knock his ankle on a table corner a couple times actually just really hurt.
when you discover (from desert bus) that cam is supposed to hurt himself on the table at the end there but he actually did and graham had to mute the scene in post to cover the laughter, although not from cam who a, is trying to not ruin the scene, and b, in a lot of pain
Which desert bus?
@@Warriorsfan-kl4ly i had to go back and look but its a clip from DB2019 called DB2019 - Cam murders his leg in Friday Nights and whether it's real
Oh my, funniest one ever! Alex shone like a death-ray-targeted hydradoodle and had me in stitches (not with a kitten nor a ninja).
I love that you can hear the laughing from the crew when he hits his foot at the end XD
This is the single best lrr skit imo
I always love FNM, but this was one of the best! Way to take one for the skit, Cam!
This was amazing. Having been watching Desert Bus, Fugi and Joe's cameos were great, and I loved the mockumentary style. Plus, the new planeswalker cards were perfect.
"Paul reacts emotionally to Hydradoodle."
Paul =/= Alex?
Hydradoodle is the best.
Brilliant! Best one in ages. Loved to way this one was filmed
I love the fact that the planeswalker cards in the intro are pretty modest when they are silverboarded
Cam, your pain brought so many people joy. I'm DYING, man. That was so good.
I don't know if it was the format, but this was one of the best Friday Nights I've seen in a while! Totally loved it
It only took me 16 minutes to find this video. Love it.
The best Friday Nights you've done. So so funny! Great job.
That silver-bordered intro was brilliant.
I love how you can see the cameraperson chuckling in the camera wobble and that cameron hitting his foot was probably not planned xD
I'm loving the arrested development/parks and rec style of comedy where there's the occasional "interview" during the skit. Do more of this!
I like the "The Office" cinematography and vibe here
I appreciate that in the episode where the intro cards are silver bordered all the effects are normal black border abilities.
You could say that Alex was unstable from this set... I'll see myself out.
3 years later still absolutely no idea what Kathleen says at 10:27
Those planeswalker cards in the beginning being reasonable creeps me out so much.
Kathleen laughing at the end was the best part
LOVED the camera work in this. Very evocative of The Office.
One of your best episodes yet
"Antelope wombat decoy octopus manatee parrot shark!" ~ Alex That was the funniest thing ever.
#suckitdevere ,*)
Edit: rewatching this in 2021. Still makes me cry with laughter!!!
Based on the color identities and very roughly the abilities, the Planeswalker cards seem to be inspired by real planeswalkers:
Graham is Nahiri, the Harbinger; James is Nissa, Kahtleen is Liliana, Alex is Chandra, Cameron is Jace, Missie is Ajani and Paul is Ugin.
This is one of my favorite episodes! Great job!
The stack: laughter of the cameraman, Kathleen reacts, Cams shin hits the table, gloating over win by opponent conceding, James decides it’s not worth it to be involved any more - guess in the end you could say... it resolved
this is amazing! I dont even play magic anymore but I love watching loading ready run work their magic
haha magic
Some sterling performances throughout. Alex's wailing scenes had me in stitches. A++
I choose to believe that bit before the credits with Cam hurting himself was a mix of enforced method acting and "throw it in".
Do you want to play magic inside this van for five minutes! We have candy!
How awesome is that on the Un-episode the Planeswalkers of the intro had NORMAL abilities instead of theis usual ones?!
Nice EasterEgg LRR!
OK you've GOT to tell me. Was Cameron Busting his leg against the table planned or was that a happy accident?
Wow this episode was a lot more random then usual, and considering the antics these guys get into constantly (like going into the woods to study Ixalan or Drafting with tokens) that's saying something.
What a perfect video to watch Post Desert Bus. I miss it already, counting down the days until next year.
so am I the only one whos noticed that the descriptions for some of these videos says Paul rather than Alex, specifically for the parts of the stories involving Alex? like the descriptor for this episode says that PAUL is the one who goes through the SPOILERS mental breakdown over the Hydradoodle when it's ALEX that goes through it.

Real talk, I didn’t think I was going to like this... I really really liked this hahahh
It's probably the best episode you've ever made!!
The whole story with Alex 😂😂😂
I love the depths that you guys went to on the intro video! It's Opposite Nights!
The part where they were giving out “free candy” was just hilarious
Hey guys! Remember the White Loxodon exchange episode? In the opening credits, the Graham card had last strike! LRR PREDICTED AN UNHINGED MECHANIC. OF COURSE IT WAS THEM!
I love that the planeswalkers in the intro are normal now that the episode is themed around Unstable.
pbandme24 I mean normalish.
BEST EPISODE FOR SO LONG- shame there was no Graham, but finally we are getting some mtg-focused episodes: these jokes were actually magic related and were really funny. This episode was much more like the very first episodes of Friday nights, and I love it!!
This is lowkey the best episode yet! Love it!
This was a nice episode of 'The Moon Base'
Graham's ultimate gives the artifact echo up until right before it matters... =P
I see. The joke is that the opening cards ARENT jokes
...anyone else stop to read the un-planeswalkers, and realized they are real actual abilities? Cept for paul's ultimate, the meta-humor on that is pretty good.
i now know what that board on there wall is at 1:08
its a crokinole board!
I like that the sliver-boarded planeswalkers in the intro are, at least until pauls one, just fair (maybe underpowered) normal looking planeswalkers with nothing funny going on.
Missy is so great. It would be fantastic if she got her own stream.
can't remember the last time i laughed so hard! your best video yet!
Hey Alex! Good news! You can finally play Super Duper Death Ray in Canlander! Flame Spill from Ikoria!
Only difference is it doesn’t hit planeswalkers.
That ending gets me every time
This is absolutely amazing, thank you
