Yes true, but I’ll say knowing him for decades he is a special case. He doesn’t practice. People throw around the word genius lightly but he literally fits the category… that’s why I highlighted that article in the beginning. People like me and most of us have to train
Thanks for listening Joshua! That part about ear training and vocabulary is definitely key! And it definitely takes years. I’ll literally never forget sitting in church at age 16, learning and then practicing my favorite chord progressions in every key!
6:25 Sounds like he went from key of Ab and played that turn around like he was in the key of B. 2-5-1-4-7-3-6 in B. But he resolved in that 6 as a dominant 7 / major 7 variant of the 1 in Ab
I was telling someone earlier that when I was 16, I discovered a chord progression that seriously fascinated me. So I took a couple hours and learned it in every key. Kicked my butt and at the same time it was a jump start to being creative.
I’ll probably do a video with Sean in a couple weeks that focuses on influences, playing with feeling, and also stretching out and learning different chord progressions no matter what musically intellectual level you’re at.

Hi Sean I'm trying to write sings and I'd like to understand how to write a rnb (Kelly Price type) bridge, you know the ones that change the whole mood of the song and get back to the chorus or the verses. What concepts should I focus on please?
