They were woken up by this eruption in the middle of the night Hawaii time to get out and find out what was going on. I thank Ken Hon for giving this live information at 6 AM his time.

In 1959, my parents, my family went to Kilauea military camp on the big island. We walked across Halemaumau crater, and received a little certificate stating we did so. Before the eruption, there were acres of Vanda orchid plants. My dad was a Marine Corps pilot, stationed out of Kaneohe on Oahu. When he would go to the big island, he would bring back hundreds of orchid flowers. 4 for 25 cents. He would bring them home and I would make leis. To think of how far science has progressed that you are able to provide live streaming pictures and information as it happens. I don’t know if anybody ever thought that would’ve been possible back then. It’s amazing thank you.
..i really don't think it was Halemaumau crater.....you would've needed a helicopter to get to the bottom of the crater....you must've walked on Kilauea crater, the larger crater in which Halemaumau sits....
@ I was not even a teenager…most likely you are correct. halemaumau is a crater within a crater. I certainly recall the smell of rotten eggs from the sulphur…and saw the steam…but now glowing rocks.

I have come countless times to unwind and learn and enjoy the power and energy that surrounds me here. I am currently parked in my Jeep with my dogs at the steam vents and enjoying a steaming here. The Volcano is quiet today, December 26, 2024 at 10 pm. God sent me here to be close to this wonder of nature no doubt in my 74 year old mind. Mucho Mahalo and hope to meet you some day to talkstory and geology and volcanology . Aloha 🤙
My wife and I we lucky enough to be on the big island when kiluea erupted in 2018 and we were able to view the eruption from the pathway from near the viewing point at which these seats are taken. It took a few days before they finally closed this area off completely. These videos are about as good as the observations get. We were very lucky to be there on the first day of the eruption on our trip and had a good visit.
The water and sulfur gas explanation was so interesting. That's what makes the fountain. Wow. Greetings from Mexico. And the peanut butter bubbles and spaghetti sauce. As a professor, your examples help us to understand much better in a funny way. And the heavy blop of jello 😂
I need to see the beauty of nature before I move to the mainland, lived here 6 years and just worked everyday and haven't gotten to see this Goddess show her beauty

I got one of those certificates also.. in 1963. It was an award known as “Pele’s Pooped Pedestrians”.

Park rangers will tell you where to view safely. Reserve a table at Volcano House and def stay for night viewing!!
