    Towards the end of this video I included a screenshot of my interaction with Jay on twitter, but I didn't really explain it, so here's some context. Soon after Jay made his video, I tried to leave a comment explaining how useful the screen can be for hobbyists who know basic Python programming, but the comment kept getting deleted. Turns out he banned the phrase "turing-smart-screen" in the comments so no one could mention it. I politely informed him on Twitter, and his response was "the product is shit, get over it". His dismissive and unprofessional response is what motivated me to make this video, in case you were wondering.
    Also check out my guide showing how to setup the Python library.

    I'm so happy with mine.
    I'm tired of people being so clever in hindsight... Aaaand then proceeding to lash out at companies, to make a couple of bucks of his own. It's all listed in the product description, it never claims it does more than what it does. He is biased, didn't review the product, sidetracked a bunch of people.
    God i love it, so amazing when an internet personality goes out of his way to outright lie, deceive, and screw over another company...
    What a smug.

      Glad to hear that it's working out great for you! And yea I agree with your other points, it doesn't make sense how some internet personalities can be so successful yet they release content that's lazy, biased, and manipulative. That's not to say all his content is bad, but in this case he seemed to place more importance on being entertaining and cracking high school jokes rather than giving factual information. It's entirely self-serving. YT has quite a few modern day clowns 🤡

    Jay's full of it!
    For under $40, I can see what my workstation is doing at a glance.
    It's 3.5", which is large enough to see it fine.
    Jay's mad, because he gets a kickback, from the suppliers of the other setup, that's insanely difficult to set up...

    • @PhazerTech
      @PhazerTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're spot on. It's nice for what it is especially considering the price. Also the PC doesn't see it as a regular monitor which can save some headaches for many people.

    • @KentuckyRanger

      @@PhazerTech Just received it today, and it installed nicely in my Puget Systems workstation.
      It's the perfect size, and monitors everything nicely.
      It even has an AORUS theme, that works great!
      I was able to re-name the CPU & GPU, as well as change the value of the RAM.
      Behing the tinted glass, it looks like it's floating.
      I have it mounted on the drive bay cover, of the Fractal case, and it just looks awesome!
      I did have to drill a small hole in the back, to allow the USB-C cable through, but was very careful about the shavings, and installed a rubber grommet.
      I have a feeling, this little tool, is going to be well worth the $35 I paid for it.
      And it didn't take hours of fiddling around with settings.
      Beginning to end, took about 30 minutes to complete.
      It has a tiny footprint, and doesn't need an HDMI cable, nor a dedicated monitor slot off the GPU.
      How Jay could trash this is beyond me.
      It really makes me think, he's getting a kickback from those manufacturers, and really sours what I thought of him, as a computer specialist.
      Lost a ton of respect for him...

      @@KentuckyRanger Nice, that sounds like an awesome setup! Putting the screen inside a case with a glass side panel can really take the aesthetics to the next level. Might be a good idea for a video to show others how you did it.

    Couldn’t agree more with your assessment of this little gizmo. Just finished an AM5 build over Christmas and thought what else would be cool to go inside the case. Had no issues installing on a clean Windows 11 (a lot of people were having issues but worked fine for me). Just wish the screen was a bit bigger but for $25 CAD it’s great value. The 5” version for me would have been 3 times the cost. Thanks for the review.

    • @PhazerTech
      @PhazerTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, now that you mention it, putting it inside a case is something I overlooked and should have talked about. Many other screens require HDMI and power to run while this one only needs a USB cable, making it a much more convenient choice if you're putting it in the case.
      Also great choice on the AM5 build, it should be supported well into the future.

    Jay's not entirely wrong, but he's not entirely right, either. There are many good uses for this screen. For myself, however, I've encountered shortcomings in both the hardware and in the software - both native and python - that leave me looking for other alternatives. The biggest issue for me with the hardware is the incredibly slow baud rate - it takes almost a full second to render a single full screen image. This makes showing animations or video on the screen impossible. The native software is basically trash, but even the python option has some shortcomings. The biggest one for me was the impossibility of having concentric radial sensors. I'm working on a re-write of the python software that might address this, and may offer limited support for very slow background animations, but a panel that supports video display would be worth the extra ~$20.

    • @PhazerTech
      @PhazerTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I addressed its slow update rate in my followup video on it. th-cam.com/video/Vpg25AdheO0/w-d-xo.html
      While it's too slow for video and animations it should be perfect for displaying sensor data in text or bar graph format. The panel makes sense for certain applications especially considering it's only $15-$20 on AliExpress.

When I had it plugged into my computer, the RGB would not start on my ram, as it was also part of the soffware that starts up when windows boots up. Also, it would crash my machine. I decided to do a fresh install of windows just because I wasn't sure how much the software had messed with my PC settings. have you had similar issues?

    • @PhazerTech
      @PhazerTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I haven't ran into any issues like that but I don't have RGB in my system either. Does it work fine if you connect it after booting up Windows? It's possible it could be some compatibility issue with one of that motherboard's USB controllers, or the devices themselves, but it's really hard to say. The first thing I'd try is connecting one of the devices to a different USB port. If both are currently using internal ports then try one on the outside and see if the issue persists.

    The problem is Jay, Gamers Nexus etc are not independent people when they review things, all the big channels are sponsored and they will only criticise if it is not going to hit them in the pocket or upset a big manufacturer enough to stop them sending things to review. Gamers Nexus rips into Alienware because he knows now there never ever going to send him anything again to review so there an easy target. It happens all over you tube, there is a guy from Germany that flies around the globe "reviewing" airlines but both Emirates and Qatar Airlines get poor reviews off him time after time, he will literally complain about the shade of yellow cushions in first class if he thinks it will earn him a few extra views. You Tube channel creators hate it being mentioned, but there in it for once reason, to make money.

      @@Alekouzos I'm not sure, if it's possible then I don't think it will be straight forward and will require digging into the underlying software that the python library uses to grab sensor data. I might look into it if I have time but I suggest opening a thread and asking your question here: github.com/mathoudebine/turing-smart-screen-python/discussions

      Yea it would be nice if there was a bigger selection of themes. I'm not aware of any sites that have any. The python package I mentioned includes some themes but I think most of them are duplicates from the official program. You can see them here: github.com/mathoudebine/turing-smart-screen-python/tree/main/res/themes

To be fair, I was going to return it, I got the return label from Amazon etc. But I ended up keeping it and did some tinkering its okay, so I'm keeping it. Keep in mind as well, there are two screens, one from xuanfang and one using turing software which seems easier to use, I have the xuanfang.
    But for the price, I think a 5 inch screen that connects to the HDMI makes more sense. You can do a lot more with the display.

    In his opinion it was crap. Say it again, it was his opinion that it's crap. You feel it's pretty good. Opinion are what you think and feel so it's not wrong. Keep in mind that Jay tends to work with a lot of high end equipment. This screen appears to fall far short of high end. That doesn't make it bad for the average user or maybe even some high end users. Personally I prefer no less than a 5" screen with a decent resolution for a sensor panel. I wouldn't even consider such a small screen. That's me, you might feel different and that's fine.
    It's my opinion you did this video calling Jay out for a viewer grab and not because you actually like this tiny screen. Why else did your video show up in my suggestions? You got to start somewhere and if it works then good job.

    • @PhazerTech
      @PhazerTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He said things that are flat out untrue and disingenuous, and it's clear he was smearing it just to drive views to his other videos. Also like I pointed out in my video, the python library works flawlessly for people who want to incorporate it into their own projects. He didn't even mention this in his "review". Did you even watch my video? Doesn't seem like it, but yet here you are leaving a lengthy 2 paragraph rant. Seems like you just got triggered that I would even dare to question your idol Jay.
      Also a product isn't "crap" just because the size doesn't fit your needs. The resolution is very crisp and the size was clearly mentioned in the product listing, so why would you and Jay complain so much about that as if you were tricked? It's not the product's fault you can't read. That's like someone buying a 13" Macbook and saying it's absolute crap because it's too small. My response would be: Well genius, maybe you should have bought the 15" Macbook instead? That doesn't mean the 13" is absolute crap.
      But then again, who cares about logic and common sense.

      As I already said in the video, admin rights are required to access the hardware sensors. Even the panels Jay promotes require admin rights, so the entire argument is a nonstarter and disingenuous. If someone is truly concerned about security then they shouldn't even be considering a sensor panel to begin with, nor should you run any software that reads hardware info.
